Which, I'm guessing, is why they named the film Birds of Prey to further divorce it from that film. But it looks like WB thinks "Fantabulous" is what's turned people off, rather than the film's clear connection to that other awful looking film which was critically reviled. To some degree they're probably right—like 5% of the missing 50% of its audience potential probably read that with the same eye-roll as someone using "amazeballs" in 2020. But the other 20% they lost to outright misogyny and 25% to people finding Harley Quinn obnoxious so they were kinda screwed from the get-go.

If they were gonna throw away their Harley Quinn solo film dollars on something, it should've been a lesbian Harley/Ivy teamup movie with a proper foil for Harley's wackiness.

Harley is popular enough with comic fans (especially gen x and younger) that it was probably something they had to try but yeah they really stacked the deck against themselves. Even the decision to go the week between the super bowl and Valentine's day which has to be a major death week of entertainment.

Harley is so popular that she was the breakout star of the first film and instantly got a spinoff. The failure to sell you on the movie is theirs alone.

Harley merch is also off the charts compared to the other characters. The logic behind the commercial viability of BoP makes sense, they just released it at a bad time and gave it such awful advertising. I don’t even think the title was the problem.

I also think it might have been a bad idea to release it so close to the gritty and serious take on her boyfriend.

I think the R rating probably also hurt Bird if Prey’s numbers, it wasn’t sold as an EDGY MOVIE for ADULTS, it looked like a wacky action romp that could easily have been PG-13. That said, the R rating is what’s got me really interested.

it's not the world's hardest R, but the action scenes are violent beyond what you can reasonably do in a PG-13, there's a lot of swearing (and used in such a way that trying to mute it instead of using alternate takes would give you a weird "Pulp Fiction TV edit" vibe), there's a beat in one of the action sequences where Harley accidentally does a poo poo-ton of coke, and there's a scene where Ewan MacGregor sexually assaults someone that's kind of rough

But Deadpool’s whole ad campaign was “this isn’t your normal comic book movie, we say gently caress,” Birds of Prey didn’t have any of that edge in its marketing.

I didn't realize it was R until the first bits of ultraviolence or swear word. None of it seemed necessary or added anything. I wouldn't feel bad about watching the movie on a plane, though.

Ewan plays the supervillain/gangster "Black Mask" who wears a skull head mask, which is hard to tell from the trailers because he doesn't actually wear the mask all that much in the movie.

If I remember correctly, he wears it for roughly one scene toward the end and then immediately takes it off.

Sony doesn't seem to have a problem with him seeing as he's headlining a Marvel movie for them.

Joke is that it's Chinese-funded.

I had heard about this a couple years ago, but had thought they wanted an Asian-American as the Plissken stand-in, since it was supposed to be a Chinese-American former Marine since he would be Chinese but have some American background to infiltrate the Little America ghetto.

Is Morbius very popular in the comics? Him getting his own solo movie always seemed weird to me, but I only know about him from his appearance in the 1994 Spider-Man show.

Not really. I think this one just somehow slipped through the cracks of Sony's "throw every Spider-Man character into a movie script and see what sticks" phase. Like the Aunt May movie, or the Silver Sable and Black Cat movie.

I'm pretty sure the upcoming movie is mostly because Sony is trying to squeeze every last drop of blood out of their Spider-Man licence (remember how they were going to do an Aunt May prequel film? And a Sinister Six film? And a Black Cat/Silver Sable film?) and Marvel have been unsuccessfully trying to make him a thing for a long time. They keep bringing him back every few years and trying to wedge him into other media but he never really takes off.

He was originally included as a sequel hook at the end of the original Blade movie but was dropped from the final cut.

Propaganda 101: Make the enemy seem both impossibly strong, but impossibly incompetent. Make 'us' look capable, scrapy, and never weak.

Not that I think Trump is anywhere near smart enough to realize that. But somewhere in his lizard brain, he's capable of realizing that the movie is showing 'Libs can capture us, libs making us look weak'. You can't even introduce the concept that The Enemy might be able to win one over you, otherwise you are introducing the concept of doubt.
