For some dumb reason I kept the packaging for the Office Space Extra Flair Edition DVD until I was forced to move in 2012. Who knows where that refrigerator magnet and red stapler are now.

The only acceptable gimmick editions are the Evil Dead Necronomicon editions and the Phantasm set where the discs are in a replica silver sphere.

At least with those Evil Dead ones they can fit on the shelf with normal cases instead of them putting the discs in a big plastic chainsaw. I think it's OK to have a display shelf, or a few small/med things that are meaningful to you, but when you get to that level, it's just garbage. I thought about buying the briefcase Blade Runner dvd back in the day. But I was working retail at the time so I ended up just getting the special edition dvd set with the different cuts. It's now been replaced by the 4K set. The only oversized packages I have are the Shout! Herzog collection and the new Monty Python Blu-ray set, which was damaged in shipping because it was designed badly.

The first movies I really bought for myself with the money from an actual job were Blade Runner, and Bubba Hotep (With the Elvis jumpsuit slipcover thing). Both are good things but they certainly reek of mid-2000s nerd culture. My tastes have expanded since then. Casimir Radon fucked around with this message at 19:47 on Feb 14, 2020 |

I bought the giant stupid version of Halo 3 that came with a nearly life-sized Master Chief helmet because I was a dumb child who thought it was cool. 13 years later it’s just up in my attic collecting dust. I think the only giant novelty boxset I have now is the Futurama complete series that had new cover art and slimmer packaging. It came in a giant box where the seasons were stacked sideways for some reason, so I just stuck those on the shelf and tossed the box in a closet. If your giant novelty display case isn’t a 1:1 Bender head then why bother?

IMO, outside of Criterion Scanavo cases, I really love the way a lot of limited editions are packaged lately with a thick board slipcase, the discs in a regular plastic case (or Criterion case for Indicator), plus a perfect bound book and other goodies. Some have digipaks, too, like the UK 4-disc Blade Runner UHD set I imported.

Was there ever a release of Blade Runner 2049 anywhere in the world that had a lot special features? The US disc has the three short films and a trailer and that's it. I know the movie wasn't very profitable in the theatre, so the studio wasn't going to spend any more money on a bunch of in depth featurettes, but man does it ever need the multi disc treatment.
