The entire schtick of Empowered is that Emp's costume grants her personal strength and invulnerability but is itself extremely fragile, and if it gets damaged enough she loses her powers until it can regenerate. This means she spends an awful lot of time wearing skintight rags and tied to a chair.

Also she has a demonic overlord trapped in a bondage device on her coffee table.

Lovely.

It's technically very competent in parts but I'm gonna go with bad art because it's way too busy, and I have a deep, deep dislike for the "American manga" style.

Empowered is one of those strange things where it sounds just absolutely terrible (hell the character was originally created because Adam Warren liked drawing 'heroine in peril' sketches at cons, I gather) and... it is absolutely terrible but scattered with just enough genuine emotion and a strange sort of... I mean I can't really say 'respect' but, like, sort of? anyways the point is that it's awful but it's also good. Its awfulness is a trope that gets deconstructed. It's a whole thing. Anyways, some people love it and some people don't and that's okay.

Yeah, I love manga, but there's a real skill in blending wildly differing styles within a single page, from cartoonish to realistic characters portrayed in simple to complex ways, with anything from full backgrounds to none whatsoever, and a lot of western imitators don't quite seem to get that this is a major aspect of manga that needs a lot of forward planning to achieve.

I think it's less he liked drawing it and more people liked paying him to draw it, and eventually it coalesced into him making an actual comic out of it.

Yeah, since folks have recently been discussing TMNT, I honestly thought that was some Deviant Art TMNT porn manga poo poo on seeing the first two panels. (That and the fact that the style is so busy, I couldn't parse what the hell was going on)

going back to this, in contrast I love it, in part because of the, well, the contrast :kiddo:
both the negative space use so you have a clear idea of who is where, and in the bottom right panel where the protags are very clearly differentiated from their opponents, you know exactly who is who and where they are, what they are doing

SPACE FACE! SPACE FACE!

Yeah that Zulli is just as busy linewise as the empowered pages but so much more clarity. Because Zulli is not a hack.

In other news, I knew quite a few guys on the ssx team and one of them was a japanophile who was so pumped Warren was doing those portraits. Then he actually saw them... The best part is it was his job to put them in the game and test the unlocks so he ended up seeing them waaay more than was healthy.

Especially when you're publishing your comic on an indie label that doesn't require you to do it.

I remember reading it when I was much younger (12 maybe) and it was such a weird and different but awesome take on the characters. Zulli wrote it all too so to call it "trippy" would be rather an understatement.

There are a ton of TMNT characters created as action figures first and inserted into the show/comics later simply because they needed more figures to sell to kids who already had the core ones, and they are all universally terrible. So you won't remember most of them because they barely used them aside from selling the figures, some only showed up in the show for like a second. That's also why there are a ton of weird-rear end variant costume turtle figures.

The best example is Ace Duck, he was created as a figure and has a whole detailed backstory on the figure box... And then in the 1987 show, he shows up as a cameo on a show the turtles are watching on TV. That's it.
