To be fair, the original design was absolutely horrible and the opening and ending scenes apparently got massively reworked into a better version during that time as well

While I give the movie points for using the villain's proper name (Robotnik) they get docked points for using the modern Sonic design and not the OG from the good games. So it's a wash in the end.

His name has always been Eggman and the design for Sonic is no closer to the Adventure or Generations era than it is to the Genesis games. He has blue arms for chrissakes.

Due to the expanded lore and different designs in the later games I always assumed that it was a lineage, that they were different characters until I realised otherwise. Gerald Robotnik, his son Ivo Robotnik who was generally pudgy and round, and then Ivo's son Dr Eggman, who had more gangly limbs and was generally less fat but more egg-shaped.

It's still a movie where Sonic eats a lot of chili dogs, farts, and then his human companion tells him to see if it left a mark. It's "decent" in the same way The Smurfs or Hop were decent. It's a bottom-tier movie for children, but it's made by professionals with a decent budget (so we're not in A Talking Cat?!? territory) and has the benefit of tremendously lowered expectations, a central character with enough appeal to survive through things far worse than this, and Jim Carrey finally doing his thing again. People predicted a travesty for the ages and got something a bit better than Chipwrecked.

Sega’s handling of it since Sonic Generations and Mania has been treating the genesis games as though they were in a completely different plane of existence from the modern games, and that characters in the “classic” Universe (like classic Robotnik) generally aren’t allowed to also exist in the Modern universe. This has prevented the current comics author from using characters like Bean the Dynamite because they were in Sonic Mania and, thus, classic characters. It’s... weird. And dumb. And I don’t know why they think anyone actually would care if Fang the Sniper showed up in a non-canon universe oh no oh god.

There's impenetrable layers of legal bullshit and corporate mandates on the Sonic comics which barely survived after leaping publishers since apparently Archie just got sick of their poo poo but IDW never saw a long-neglected IP that they weren't willing to turn into a comic. Mostly my biggest complaint about the current run is the loving zombie arc that's gone on way too goddamn long.

Wasn't the story that a Sega exec pulled the plug after they bought a Sonic comic (back in the Archie days maybe) for their kid and eventually looked at it and screamed "they're doing what with our property?!"
