I explicitly said that I consider artists to have worth, because art broadens your horizons and develops you as a person. Performing sports makes you healthy. What does WATCHING sports give you other than brainless entertainment? It's just as worthless as reality television.

I mean apart from there being no hard distinction between a sport and a performance art to speak of, there's a huge communal and ritual function that tends to be overlooked by people with no friends (or somewhat more charitably, who hated their family or community growing up). :v:

I just wouldn't want my local theater troupe to be giving themselves permanent brain damage for my entertainment, either. In much the same way I don't want rape and sexual harassment to just be the loving price of doing business for a medium I love.

(Especially not if film/theater/whatever were constantly presented as a means to pay for an education and escape poverty!)

Most of them are also making some billionaires millions of dollars and probably spent years of their lives making people money playing for free. So like pro athletes are generally getting only a fraction of the money being made and there's a lot more guys how get broken down and used up without ever making a fortune.

There are 1200 members of the MLBPA. There are nearly 9000 members of the NFLPA. There's tens of thousands of minor league players making minimum wage. Tens of thousands of college athletes making their universities millions and not getting anything and never advancing to pro sports. Wannabe NBA players will uproot to China or Europe to play ball. Today there's a secondary football league playing offering its players BELOW minimum wage pay just for a chance to play "pro ball."

Like, assuming all pro athletes are multi millionaires with sneaker and book deals and high paying speaking engagements and tv analysis gigs is a pretty big misunderstanding of the reality of sports.

yeah, it's like making the assumption that all actors are multimillionaires because you saw what George Clooney's house looks like, when the reality is that most people who work in hollywood, like most people who play professional sports, don't really make all that much money. The whole "well they'll be just fine" thought process is exactly what the owners of the teams in the pro leagues (all billionaires with way more wealth than pretty much anyone playing sports) want you to think, because they'll exploit that when it comes time to sign a new contract with the players unions.

Major junior hockey in canada/usa is an insane scam. They’re currently being sued for not paying their players minimum wage and people point to the scholarship program they have as evidence that the kids are being compensated. The league is considered professional by the ncaa so if they lose eligibility in the states. Also, if they play any games in a professional league they lose the scholarship. The lowest pro league in the us is the echl and those players make about $500 a week and almost never make it to the pros so these kids have to immediately make a decision after junior whether they are going to continue trying to do what they practiced their whole lives for or go to college.

Yeah, for every first round draft pick there's probably a couple hundred kids having to make massive life changing decisions on whether to gamble their futures on pro sports or abandon what they've been gunning for their whole lives and go try and get a business degree or trade school or something. Its a messed up system and assuming everyone is made for life only helps the billionaire assholes rigging the system.

And this entire argument is entirely US-centric, while apparently also painting all athletes across the board with the same brush. I'd like to know what the "sports athlete persons should only be paid $1 per annum or they can gently caress OFF!" crowd feels about Pacific Island rugby players, who ply their trade in Europe and Japan in order to provide for not just their families, but in some cases, their entire communities back in the islands.
