It's the end of February, back in...

We're so close to Super Tuesday now. But we got some stuff in the meantime.

1
Something Romney had to deal with was the fact that the Affordable Care Act, the GOP's hated white whale, was based of the 2006 Massachusetts health care reform, dubbed Romneycare because we suck at nicknames. And I believe that was based on Heritage Foundation proposals for health care when Republicans first took the House in the 90s. So yeah, 20 years later we're hearing about how conservative health reform is socialism. The Overton window is dead.

2
Despite Santorum's surprise victories earlier in the month, Mitt remained the frontrunner.

3
No commentary here; just showcasing Asay's unique homophobic energy.

4
:mitt:

5
A portion of a JFK speech that said religion should be separate from politics, and Santorum said that this made him want to "throw up."

"Rick Santorum posted:

I don't believe in an America where the separation between church and state is absolute.
Not terribly surprising from a Dominionist.

6
Oh good, I get to mention Ron Paul. Sadly for his weird fanboys, this would be his last rodeo. And it's also when his old, racist newsletters popped up, which...I mean it's not like he was going to win in the first place, but it can't do the Libertarian Party any favors to expose the racism.

A
Six students were shot, with three dying, in last February 2012. Conservative indifference to kids dying hasn't changed much in eight years.

B
Asay also has that racism energy, with a modern take on Dolchstoßlegende.

C
So the Asay is about an Afghan solider who found the Quran as part of waste paper and sent for incineration. They killed two US soldiers, and Obama apologized for the Quran showing that he hates are troops.

C
Obama said something about trying to tune up your car to make it more gas efficient as a way to cope with price hikes, and yeah it's probably not what people want to hear, but Americans also think there's a button to press for low gar prices. And yes, I know the cartoon you're all thinking about now, but that's still a month away.

D
The year prior, Republicans decided it was good idea to politicize the debt ceiling, causing a huge deal over that, and some of the fall-out would happen around this time. It lead to some dumb budget poo poo, some of which we will likely see in the fall, and it is just another in the long list of how the GOP has been loving up our norms.

E
Here it is: the best political cartoon of all time. Nothing will ever surpass its majesty.

NEXT WEEK: Oh wait, next week is...still February. Huh. It's almost like I finished February early on purpose! Well, that's right: there will be no 2012 post for February 29th! I'm going on vacation, and I will be away from my computer for a bit. We will resume on March 7th with Super Tuesday cartoons! Have a happy...leap year? Yeah, let's go with that. See ya in two weeks!

Reading to my 7 year old tonight I came across a Calvin and Hobbes about nothing. And it's better than all the prickly City's about nothing combined.

My suggestion to everyone is to reread Calvin and Hobbes. It's amazing. The tiniest lil difference in Calvin's expression to show a change in attitude. It's just so good.

Yeah, I was just re-reading Calvin and Hobbes and went "... jesus loving christ that's simultaneously both very concise and eloquent and perfectly comprehensible to a child" more than once.

And then went "gently caress you Stantis your loving drivel doesn't deserve to be in the same galaxy".

Any of those strips is understandable to a child while they may carry meanings it takes an adult to appreciate... and a lot of analysis to appreciate just how good Watterson is at getting a point across without wasting time nor space.

He walked away because there wasn't anything more he felt like saying, too. No endless rehashing, no dragging it out with forty hours of research per week.

So if you ever feel like you just don't get the hatred towards Stantis anymore, you might want to recalibrate your expectations with some Watterson. One of them isn't afraid to say important things about difficult subjects while keeping it appropriate for children, and the other can't bring themselves to say "torturing children is bad".

Republicans have already blown their load so hard by spending the last couple decades railing against democrats as godless socialists who want to give you free stuff that now that we have an actual socialist likely to take the Dem nominee, they need to amp up their complaints but can’t take it any further without it falling flat.

“That’s right, Bernie is going to make *EVERYTHING* free for *EVERYONE*, and you know who’s gonna pay for it all? *YOU*, the *TAXPAYERS*, who will also get everything for free I guess and his tax plan is only really going to raise taxes on the wealthy so most of you are just gonna get free stuff without paying any more and that’s bad I swear...

From what I understand, it's not "you" though, it's that they want to give SOMEONE ELSE free stuff.

They'll never permit their supporters to imagine a situation where they could get that stuff, even though that's exactly what Bernie (and to a lesser dergee the others) is proposing.

How does anyone not be a taxpayer but follow a law abiding lifestyle? You would have to live on someone else's land somewhere in a state with no sales tax, not own a cell phone, never drive anywhere, never do any hunting and fishing that might require a permit, emerging only to sell your wood carvings for cash at the local Farmer's Market, buy salt and nails, and vote for Godless Democrats. That talking point ignores everything except the income tax. It’s true that close to half of us all pay little or nothing in income tax, but that’s because we also get paid poverty wages. This is, of course, the fault of democrats for preventing the invisible hand from making everything perfect and great
