The entire ST is a complete mess, not just TROS. They each have some redeeming facets but overall are stunningly bad. They have a layer of superficial modern blockbuster slickness that keeps stupid people entertained (or at least just momentarily distracted which is what big budget movies are now) but they, and not the prequels, deserve the incomprehending derision.

Nothing, not jar jar, not yipeee, not nooooo, not any of the insane anti prequel hysteria memes, is as insultingly, nihilistically stupid and bad as the Fortnite transmission, the neoliberal hillarybot centrism of TLJ, the pathetic cantina scene in TFA, etc.

If you buy into the idea that the prequels are legendarily, epically bad but that the sequels are good,ok, or even just “normal” bad, you are an idiot. The depiction of Finn is much more racist than anything about Jar Jar. The difference in the reception of the two trilogies is a scathing indictment of nerd culture.

They have better acting though, which makes them less painful to physically watch. The prequels have all the acting chops of a sixth grade play.

Yeah the casting is easily the best thing about the sequels. Ridley and Boyega are a lot of fun to watch

Orca lady?
The Last Jedi suffered the problem that a lot of big budget blockbuster sequels had where they are just like one or two script drafts away from being good like it was so close but there were just one or two decisions made in the story that just didn't do what it needed to do.

I think the prequels are going to be mo;re memorably bad because they are unique, whereas the sequels are bad in the same bland way that Jurassic World and the DC movies and half of Marvel and so many other modern movies are

The sequel trilogy feels like a fan film but with the budget and resources of the real deal, I can never escape this feeling when watching the trilogy.

Also I wanted to poo poo on them for including an extremely normal rear end looking casino in their sci-fi epic, but then I remembered Lucas included an extremely normal rear end looking 50s diner as a plot essential scene in his sci-fi epic.

Stilll, the casino set is not terribly well designed or decorated. I felt like there should have been weird alien fine art all over the place, but the walls are all blank. It looks like a casino from star trek

I went to see ROTS alone the other night and i have other thoughts about the Reylo kiss

I didn’t like it one bit, I would like a Ben redemption arc but I wanted it to take longer than like a couple hours.

Yeah sure he always hesitated but he still hurt people specially Ray

That’s one of the reasons why I don’t agree with the kiss.

BUT I do think Ben and Rey share a connection that no one else has with either of them.

They can see what the other thinks (i think) they know each other’s weaknesses and having a bond like that with someone it really is intimate

No one will understand this kind of Jedi experience like the other.

Do I think they share a kinda unique type of connection? Yeap

Is that excuse or a valid reason to make Reylo cannon? Nope

I’m actually glad he died after the kiss

The alternatives in my head were:

-They kiss and he dies

Or

-they don’t kiss and he goes with the Resistance

Apart from this dilemma, I think it was a great movie

Reylo was just the ending of titanic except in a universe where people can heal each other so it makes even less sense that they couldn't both make it out alive. Edit: Also the loving ST in general had a boner for making major characters die of exhaustion which is super loving boring. Throw a moon at them at least.

Reylo was one of the worst and grossest things in the ST and part of what I really liked about TLJ was Rey slowly coming to realize that Kylo Ren was toxic and salvageable as a person and straight up :sever:ing at the end of the movie and never looking back. Shame we never got that final movie in the trilogy, I would have loved watching Kylo Ren's spiral into conflicted madness as he tries to fill the void in his soul with more power and more evil and Rey, Finn, Poe and Rose have to team up to stop him for good because he's just too far gone.

Weird how for something marketed as the Sequel Trilogy only got two movies, but whatever. gently caress Star Wars.

That reminds me of something I noticed too.

In the original and prequel trilogies someone is maimed horribly or killed by a lightsaber in every single movie, at least once. The cantina scene, Lukes hand, and Vaders hand in the OT. Maul, Qui Gon, Dooku, Fett, Anakins limbs, in the PT.

How many horrible lightsaber wounds and deaths are there in the ST? There's Snoke but I can't really remember any more.

Phasma did in an alternate take on her fight with Finn in TLJ. That version included more character development for her and a more definitive death scene for her but Rian Johnson changed it because he thought JJ Abrams was going to use her in Ep 9 and well
