Apparently the Italian cases are genetically distinct from the Chinese ones, so it's been spreading there for weeks already. It's everywhere at this point, and has probably been quietly spreading for a while. I mentioned in this thread that earlier in the week I had a pretty high fever, wheezy chest, etc. I ended up going to the docs - she told me it was viral, she'd been seeing a lot of it around, and I'd probably be feeling the effects for 2-3 weeks in total. It's been a week since my symptoms first started and I'm still definitely sick, although not feverish at least. But beyond some cursory questions about if I'd been to China or South East Asia recently, she didn't even seem to entertain the idea that it could be Coronavirus - and it probably isn't. But the symptoms are literally the exact same, so it could very easily be here and we won't know because we won't start testing en masse until the serious cases start popping up.

Like Americans are panicking more than we are here, in Singapore, where there’s a quarantine facility next door to my house, where we actually have loads of cases, in this small rather dense country where most people ride public transit and eat communally. It truly is woven into the fabric of Americanism to be a bit of a prepper  (I’m mostly joking, obviously how Singapore handles the situation is not replicable other places. I would probably also be panicking if I were back home in a country without a functional government)

Meanwhile, US citizens are collectively waking up to the fact that they'll be out $23,000 ($3k test + $20k isolation costs) minimum, and likely several hundred thousand+ if admitted to the ICU. That's probably leading to a lot of  in the US right now.
