Earlier today I heard that there are no black people in Dilbert. It was harder to verify than I expected, all I could find about it was this tweet: https://mobile.twitter.com/ScottAdamsSays/status/958372722668482560 Totally normal character who just happens to be an Indian with the one character flaw of being young. The fact that people called Scott Adams racist for this is the perfect reason to keep using this character for decades and never introduce a black character.

If you want to have a really rockin' Saturday night, spend an hour checking out the comments section on any given Dilbert cartoon at dilbert.com. There's a guy with an Anonymous avatar who spends what is apparently all of his free time arguing with camgirl link bots One thing they can agree on, at least, is they really hate the Pointy Haired Boss

Is Scott Adams asserting that he's somehow had his creativity castrated by black people because he would be shouted down as a racist if he included a black character with a flaw that made them funny? edit: I know he's a piece of poo poo, I just want to unpack specifically why this one tweet contributes to that fact.

Scott Adams is legit mentally ill, but since he got rich in the 90s and has gently caress-you-money, everyone just stands around and says, "Oh, that's Scott. He's a little eccentric, but otherwise... TOTALLY NORMAL!!!"

he's probably correct in that if he added a black character he would be labeled as a racist, but only because he would be really racist about it.

Do you mean to imply the Scott Adams, the writer of the nationally syndicated comic "Dilbert", is actually a super gross dude with terrible opinions who can't stop himself from yelling them all over the place, even though he is far richer than he deserves to be and could just shut up and enjoy his wealth quietly like all the other gross rich people without yelling hosed up stuff all the time when nobody wants to hear that?

ChesterJT posted:They're pretty stupid but why is this one racist? As noted above, Indian taxi driver, but I think only really because you have to read into Scott Adams mindset in placing those characters. For instance, there is no reason Wally is not the person asking that question with, say, Alice answering while smugly sipping her coffee. Or Pointy-Hair-Boss, to give some sort of comment on the gig economy and a lack of empathy from management. But instead we have Asok, the forever exploited Indian worker at the bottom of the food chain. While the final panel should be read in conjunction with the earlier panels, it is entirely believable knowing Scott Adams that the final panel essentially detaches - reading into it an isolated statement that the only thing that differentiates Asok from an Uber Driver is owning a Prius - and the earlier two panels just bolstering the characteristics Scott Adams projects onto Indian office workers. It's not the cleanest or easiest accusation of racism, but I think it's pretty arguable that it's justified to include in the overall picture of Scott Adams being racist.

I wish Scott Adams had stuck with harmless white-collar humor and otherwise been a recluse but I guess even in his early work there is an air of "the cartoonist thinks he is smarter than everyone"

Adams told his newsletter readers that he’d draw Dilbert with a flat tie if he did the deed. He uncurled the tie after he went on a date, but paired it with ambiguous dialogue.

It's even more hosed up because a major thesis of his early nonfiction was how modern society is so complicated even the smartest of us spends most of their time being abject dumbasses. But when you have a blog and a captured audience hanging on your every word for twenty years you're bound to go a little insane with power

According to a Dilbert book I read about 20 years ago, Scott Adams doesn't do the coloring of the Sunday strips and he complained that his editor liked to add diversity at the worst times. That was his handwritten annotation written under a strip about an office thief who was black

Yes, people and fans of Dilbert do indeed hate the pointy-haired boss. Despite Scott practically worshipping the real-life incarnation of him unironically.

been squinting at this one like a riddle I see the quote:""india is so backwards and unscientific" -an indian guy" - a white guy stripped down and workshopped, I think it would look something like this: quote:asok: did you hear India criminalized being gay? quote:asok: India criminalized being gay. I'm ashamed of my home country's homophobia why are they even talking about nuclear weapons? it just creates this extra leap the audience has to make either that, because india criminalized homosexuality, that means they want to nuke gay people, or that because they're unscientific they would use nuclear weapons to destroy their own landmarks without that leap, dilbert's remark makes no sense as a reply to what asok was saying, and even so, what he says is the first half of a punchline that he just leaves hanging for asok to finish, which asok would have no way of intuiting. this reads like a story written by a patient suffering from brain damage that's used in a psychology class to demonstrate what it looks like when somebody loses the ability to distinguish other people's understanding from their own asok understands it because adams understands it, so you end up with this broken statler and waldorf exchange being performed for an audience of nobody, squeezed into the last panel because the first two are taken up by a bizarre racist sockpuppet rant, and crippled by the pointless addition of nukes it is such a bad joke. the only way to read this strip for it to make any sense is that adams forgot that he was writing two characters he got so wrapped up in trying to get digs in at astrologists and addressing india's status as a nuclear power that he lost his theory of mind he got so distracted by his own STEMlord jerk-off pontification that he forgot how to conceptualize human beings having different thoughts and feelings (which, in a way, summarizes his entire career)
