Two tips for the wise:
1. Buy an AK-97 assault rifle.
2. If there's someone hanging around your neighborhood you don't know, shoot him.

Is there a PS4 goon clan?

Also there anything specific I should be focusing on as a brand-new player? I'm up to level 13 now and just kind of doing Main / Side missions. I've knocked out a few control points and messed around with some of the projects that gave interesting blueprints, but I just want to make sure I'm not missing out on any obvious area of progression / quality of life upgrades along the way.

So far I really like assault rifles and marksman rifles. Last night I found a high-end P90 that just shreds things at close-to-medium range though. Shame it's going to probably be obsolete in a couple levels but I'm enjoying it while it lasts.

Lastly, is there a list anywhere of all the unlockable cosmetic stuff / weapon skins that are just laying around in the world? I've found a few so far but I want to make as many ridiculous outfits as possible.

For progression, run through the main missions and strongholds to get you to 30 so you can unlock the world tiers. You can save side missions for later if you like unless you’re hurting for XP. Some are hidden and you’ll need to explore to find the start. Also pay attention to the little SHD icons on the map, that’s where you’ll find the caches needed to get more skills. You’ll need to usually solve a little environmental puzzle to get to them.

Looting suitcases around the world can get you gray-level cosmetics. Those bright green weapon cases in missions will get you weapon decals, and if you see big yellow chests hanging in the sky from a tree or building, shoot those and they’ll pop out gear decals. Every level up should get you apparel cache keys that you can open for cosmetics. The most ridiculous stuff would be in the apparel caches.

I am getting this constantly with BT choppers when they're coming in to drop reinforcements and it's hilarious every time.

Just reached stage 5 of the Firewall research. The last step on stage 4 (Darpa mission on Hard+) was loving hell because I went ahead and did it solo on Challenging because it's the daily. The final encounter is loving BRUTAL. One tank, the boss mortaring poo poo, then a bunch of support goons with drones and stuff. It's hard to stay out of sight from the boss and in cover from everything else so you eat up your armor kits staying alive. Then when you clear everything and trigger the phase 2 an elite warhound shows up alongside a bunch of other poo poo. The only way I managed to clear it was to bait the 2nd phase when I was ready by it so I could spam skills and kill everything before they had a chance to spread out. After that I could handle the boss solo.

I know you said solo but if you or someone else runs into this while trying for a group I've found when matchmaking fails the call for backup option does not. A lot of people were hunting for easy shepherd ranks due to free weekend and I expect they still might be. Even 2 people is worlds easier than one for that fight.

I did a few shepherd responses and it's pretty fun to drop into a complete shitshow (you will always drop into a complete shitshow) and save the day.

Does the game become unplayable solo at World Tier 2? Everywhere I go, any encounter on the map, no matter how trivial, always escalates to swarms of baddies coming from every direction with bulletproof robot backup. Also a stiff breeze removes my armor.

Thinking back, the way I'd start a world tier was I'd immediately upgrade my crafting bench, craft a M4 assault rifle. That'd give a good initial boost, then I'd hit up every CP until I max out the GS for that tier and then move onto the invaded missions and strongholds.

Black Tusk are definitely overwhelming at first when you're not used to robo-dogs and exploding drones.

I'm interested in jumping back in but the last time I played at the launch of the first ever raid the build selection felt very bad, with the sets being very under-tuned, skills being extremely weak and almost impossible to mod, and there being no real alternative to the super-long-range snipe-'till-they-all-die approach with only which special weapon you had differentiating players. Has that changed, or does Gear 2.0 look like it'll change it? I know the setting is modern-day military shooter so all of the loot will be military guns and military ammo but the loot still felt tragically dull even compared to Division 1.

I'm gonna apologise because I think I've asked this question before, but I have the memory of a goldfish.

Played for a couple hours and man has stuff changed. Basic game is still the same, but lots of talent changes on my gear that pretty well hosed my AR/LMG build, even though I can still get through CP's and stuff reasonably well. Making talents 'unique' is certainly a big change and I had Hard Hitting stacked on my build so 4 or 5 of my active talents were just plain not doing anything as they were duplicate uniques. Also some of the talents clearly have different activation requirements now as a couple of them either had too many or too few of whatever color thingie they needed to be active.

Went ahead and spent the $3 extra on the new expansion to 're-buy' the game through ubi, and then grabbed the 1yr pass for $12 to unlock the new specializations so I don't have to grind them.

Once the new expansion is in place and I have a chance to play I'll see if there are any super-casual friendly goon guilds with openings, as I tend to play fairly sporadically in short bursts and solo, so I would contribute to the numbers needed for guild stuff, but not so much in grouping.

If I'm enjoying the game, is the Year 1 pass worth picking up now that it's heavily discounted, or is that stuff all basically about to be obsolete? I have no idea how the whole specialization system works or anything so I can't tell how useful that stuff would be.

It’s nice unlocking all the specializations right away, even though the weapons for the new ones are a bit rear end. Pretty sure the Y1 pass is basically obsolete though.

They're basically your classes once you get to level 30 and beyond. You get 3 in the base game that you can pick from and 3 sets of field research to unlock the others, blueprints and some cosmetic stuff, if you buy the year 1 pass you get the 3 other specialisations straight away and the field research just unlocks the cosmetics and blueprints in that case. The field research isn't too bad but can be pretty grindy and will be impossible to do for the duration of the expansion since you're locked into New York and a lot of the requirements for the research is in DC. There's also some extra missions in the pass that have some backstory, a bit of combat in varied locations and cosmetic stuff as rewards as well.

As to whether the specialisations are worth it, they're pretty cool. I really like the technician all round and the talent trees for the flamethrower and minigun ones are cool, the weapons themselves for those latter two are a bit crap imo.

So the Year 1 pass unlocks some things early but it also DOES have extra missions and whatnot that I can’t unlock without it?

I’m not interested in paying to steamroll everything early but I’m enjoying this enough that I’ll probably try to unlock everything. I know there’s already one purple level on my map near the White House that requires the Year 1 pass. Should I wait and buy it later? Can I buy it now when it’s on sale and not install it until later? (I’m on PS4).

You don't really install it. Your game already has the data, it's just locked until you buy the year one pass. Just loving buy it if it's cheap right now. You're not forced to do the classified missions.

The Year 1 pass also gives you the new specializations off the bat, but you still have to grind to max them out, and you can still do the missions normally done to unlock them and you'll get cosmetics and other poo poo instead.

As someone who came back recently, hit the 30 boost, and had literally no progress beyond that to start with: paying to unlock the specs super isn't worth it. Like your time vs money is your own, but none of the requirements are anywhere near approaching difficult so don't let that scare you. Most of them are either finding a few patrols to bleed/burn/whatever or running a mission and shooting some guy's backpack until it breaks.

I agree that you can't always fill a group when matchmaking for the dailies, but I've taken to hitting up the Random Matchmaker and you'll get thrown into a group straight away - Sometimes it's guys running Camp White Oak for the first time, sometimes it's a group doing CP4s or it's a guy matchmaking for bounties - so if it's co-op you crave you may have to lower your standards a bit.
