To be a lil more specific: Ellen Page did not do any nudity for the game, but in one scene her character is shown in a shower, from the shoulders up. People taking the game apart discovered that the designers fully modeled and textured a naked body for her, which is just errgh

Coupled with that, David Cage's studio has a bad history with racial stuff in their games and has been accused of being a toxic work environment for women.

It gets even worse:

Ellen Page posted:

'You should gently caress her to make her realize she's gay.' He said this about me during a cast and crew 'meet and greet' before we began filming, X Men: The Last Stand. I was eighteen years old. He looked at a woman standing next to me, ten years my senior, pointed to me and said: 'You should gently caress her to make her realize she's gay.' He was the film's director, Brett Ratner.
I was a young adult who had not yet come out to myself. I knew I was gay, but did not know, so to speak. I felt violated when this happened. I looked down at my feet, didn't say a word and watched as no one else did either. This man, who had cast me in the film, started our months of filming at a work event with this horrific, unchallenged plea. He 'outed' me with no regard for my well-being, an act we all recognize as homophobic. I proceeded to watch him on set say degrading things to women. I remember a woman walking by the monitor as he made a comment about her 'flappy pussy.'

Ellen Page posted:

I got into an altercation with Brett at a certain point. He was pressuring me, in front of many people, to don a t-shirt with 'Team Ratner' on it. I said no and he insisted. I responded, 'I am not on your team.' Later in the day, producers of the film came to my trailer to say that I 'couldn't talk like that to him.' I was being reprimanded, yet he was not being punished nor fired for the blatantly homophobic and abusive behavior we all witnessed. I was an actor that no one knew. I was eighteen and had no tools to know how to handle the situation.

Ratner is scum.

At least we can probably count on Martin Campbell to make the next Bond film actually good because he seems to prefer doing the first entry with a new Bond, like Goldeneye and Casino Royale.

I think he's said that since GoldenEye they've kept asking him to do each new Bond movie but he only wants to do the original for each actor. I think I've mentioned it before but if you want to see him doing more quasi-Bond, watch the 1980s British miniseries Reilly, Ace of Spies which he directed and has Sam Neill as a very much early-1900s Bond.

On the other hand I know Nolan has said he would also only want to do the first movie of a new actor and even after the Danny Boyle fiasco I still hold out hope that they might actually want Nolan to do a Bond. Especially if Tenet does well since the trailer makes it seem like a Nolan Bond.

That's the rumor, though it's not like the behaviour is mutually exclusive. Predators never see themselves as harmful, particularly among the gay community where an older man taking a young man under his wing to introduce him to the scene was prevalent for so long. Moving away from the acceptance of that dynamic is a big struggle in a lot of communities to this day.

At least in John Wick they're somewhat implied to mostly be regular homeless people and runaways with potential who he took under his wing. In David Cage's games they're often literally the Illuminati hiding in plain sight and living off the grid. In one case so that they could prepare to fight physical personifications of the Internet and AI to prevent the 2012 apocalypse.

adapting video games for television might be the solution for the whole "striping agency from the viewer/player, doing cool stuff/just watching" problem.
On tv usually stories and characters have more time to breathe and grow and connect with the viewer than a movie.
Stuff like uncharted are the ip's that have a better chance of working because it's basically Indiana Jones with the serial numbers filed off, and that approach gave us the national treasure movies.

Chernobyl's dialogue wasn't that great, it's saving grace was the story, the performances, and kickass editing.

Possibly, there was a homeless man that hung out around my college since a lot of students had a habit of giving him a few bucks or buying him a sandwich when they saw him. There was also a rumor that he was secretly wealthy and either insane or just had nothing better to do. Everyone I knew that perpetuated the rumor also attended objectivist or libertarian meetings. I always assumed the rumor was their way soothing a guilty conscience about never doing anything to help him.

yeah it's a pretty common belief that, even if they're not secretly wealthy, most homeless people who are asking people for money are making like, mid-to-high 5 figures a year and have a home and are just lazy which is why you shouldn't give them money, and i'd be willing to bet that 95% of the people who believe that are also big fans of destroying the social safety net. it's definitely a belief you hold to justify your actions.

I think Cage got away with it at the time because it seemed to be just the whole style for video games to have weepy teenage-looking girls (always brunette and Caucasian) who need to be constantly protected from sexualised violence, and somehow it got called woke despite pretty clearly just pandering to a different set of objectifying fetishes. (Along with the whole Video Game Sad Hairy Dads thing) Also while Bayonetta was a massive fault line in the culture wars.

Joss Whedon's never been quite this specifically gross. As in, I've never had the impression he is repeatedly putting his own rape fantasies on screen. Oh, and Cage's women in peril always have short dark hair as well, he has a type.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eNC_IBKVPA

In finding that video I've just remembered a massive spoiler for the central plot of that game which shows just how bad of a writer Cage is. The killer is the fat detective, and the reveal of him being the killer comes after you the player were privy to his internal thoughts wherein he explicitly is written to not be the killer. The entire conclusion of the narrative hinges on breaking the game's reality to provide a 'shocking' twist ending that you could never guess because the game expressly makes it impossible in the narrative.

I remember playing this game, right as my mother came in to watch me play for a bit I was at a part where some weirdo serial killer, that had a very nebulous connection to the plot ties down the same woman from the video and attempts to stick a drill in her vagina.

A good writer would make it so all his thoughts have double meanings so you can replay the game and go "ohhhhh". But that's hardly the only issue with Heavy Rain's story. Like how there's a huge plot hole that was created when a significant story beat was cut from the game, and it is never explained or referenced again after a certain point. Also just how useless Madison's character is to the narrative. If she disappeared the plot would barely change.

There's also how linear the game is despite the hype before release of how there's a million different endings and ways for the story to play out. That's more bad advertising than bad writing though.

All that said I did enjoy Heavy Rain the first time I played it. Some of the scenes are really well done. It's just when you go back and look at the overall story and game it's a huge mess.
