So apart from Phoenix Wright the only visual novels I've played have been otome games: Hakuoki Kyoto Winds, Amnesia Memories, Bad Apple Wars, the first Code Realize, and Nightshade. I enjoy them on their own but I also love them for what they say about gender roles, society, etc.. Why are some types of boys more represented than others? Do girls want them more or do the devs think girls want them more? Why is outright sex so much less common than in VN's for boys? And so many other questions. I wanna see the other side of the equation, though. I wanna play a VN about dating girls and made for boys. I think they're called bishojo games? I have one I was already recommended called Princess Evangile but I was hoping to get some other suggestions. There are clear types you can find in otome games so there must be common types you can find in most VN's for boys. Is anyone here old like and remembers Totally Spies and specifically boy-crazy Clover? Or maybe you watch My Hero Academia where Camie was introduced a few eps back? I like that ditzy fun-loving type of female character and I would assume they'er in a lot of VN's but I have no idea.

yeah, the kinda dumb but upbeat female character is pretty common. they're usually the 'normal childhood friend' type. you could do the wanko route of majikoi? she's not really got the 'boy crazy' aspect but she's definitely got the dumb and energetic/upbeat angles. majikoi's mostly a goofy comedy with some martial arts stuff, some of the jokes don't land but it's pretty funny and the protag's actually pretty likable. And I like that he has male friends who actually matter to him and he talks to oftenly enough, instead of one guy or no friends at all. love, election, and chocolate is also pretty archetypal but mostly enjoyable.

Majikoi group has the Kawakami sisters so it's them by default even before getting into the rest who are pretty good, though Masato in LB is the superior muscle idiot character.

Trying to figure out societal commentary through VNs is really head-breaking because there's so many levels of guessing what people want involved, especially when it comes to games originally released in Japan and then licensed (or not) for English audiences. And some stuff gets rewritten between versions because of what they think the different markets will accept, and sometimes those decisions are quite baffling and don't seem to have much to do with the real markets, and so on. Otome games with sex in them exist in Japan, but have any been licensed? And if not, why not? Is it solely because MG's licensing survey suggests that their established audience isn't up for it? How much does the feedback loop of phone games being seen as more-girly and PC games as less-girly, with the associated restrictions that afaik you can't do porn in phone games, affect the level of demand for 18+ content in otome games? Why has no one, afaik, been able to get the BL game market to thrive in the west? And so on.

True. I don't expect to come away with any grand answers, it's just a fun little intellectual game. I'm a dude and otome games are made for girls but of course I'm sure other guys play them. Nevertheless they're marketed for girls and I think it's mostly girls at r/otomegames and I've seen them argue over what cliches they hate about the standard otome game. A lot of them for instance dislike how chaste most are while I'm actually quite content with everything just being simple and mushy. I don't want sex in my feel good game. I remember when I played Amnesia (my second otome after Hakuoki) I greatly enjoyed Sawa and Mine being there as now my MC had actual friends and equals. It was cute and heartwarming. But some girls on Reddit criticized this depiction of girlfriendship as vastly outdated which is obviously something I wouldn't know. And so-on and so-on. I also ponder why exactly I want different things in my husbando vs. my waifu. I don't want a ditzy husbando for instance. However I detested Shin in Amnesi for being mean and I could not even contemplate dating Kazama from Hakuoki beause he kept trying to kidnap and rape me. These are not disqualifying qualities in a girl, though. I would find a terse and villainous women interesting and exciting. It's all very fun to think about once I'm done feeling good and just want to reflect back on what it all means. Man, every time I see how someone brings up R18 otome I rmb all the terrible reviews/summaries I read and drat, maybe the companies are trying to protect players Imagine the worst plot and MC suffering and there you have it. I mean, even in Japan they are a super small market and when they do get ported they make it all-ages. I don't see mobage are more "girly" since there's an ocean of waifu gacha games that have 3x male heroes each. Honestly, I feel like most ppl play them since due to the free time during commutes and I'm tired. JAST BLUE localizes N+C BL games for the overseas market so far they have done 2x games.

I'm not sure how I feel about Raging Loop, sans the Extra stuff and Revelations of course. From the beginning it was a VN with a fairly unusual structure, pacing, tone, and dialogue, and that persisted from the beginning all the way to the ending. Frequently it made for a refreshing different sort of take on that sort of VN story but I also just as frequently felt I'd step away from it, digest it further, and find that it wasn't quite coming together either. Part of it I think is the Feasts themselves; they are both the strength and weakness of the story. They're good in that they are compelling games of wit that keeps you on the edges of your seats, and often on the best routes they were what kept me coming back. On the other hand because of the structure of the game after a certain point a ton of routes have basically no major scenes happen outside of the feast, with character interactions being reduced to vague/cryptic scenes that may or may not pay off down the line but don't really do much in the way in developing the characters, and the Feasts themselves don't really give the characters a lot of room to breathe because of their nature So in the end the cast kind of felt...kind of shallow? That's a bit reductive and obviously not universally true (and I'm sure the Revelations/Extras will change this a bit), but I can't help but feel that most of the cast just came off ultimately as underutilized. The ending itself is just also kind of forced and convoluted for my tastes (some real Processor Layton Twist energy), with a lot of what I would perceive as sophistry used to bullshit its way through it. Some of which was certainly satisfying for the characters involved but a lot of it was more "well I guess that's how that's going to go, huh".

Tonfa posted:https://itch.io/s/29062/stayathomevnsale Just downloaded them all and started Magical Eyes. I'm amused by the even-the-prologue-has-a-prologue plot structure at the beginning (which Fate/Stay Night, for example, is also guilty of), and by the unnecessary glossary entries for things like "pancake" (which I assume is an intentional running gag). So it seems that our main character fights ghosts called Variants that possess people and give them superpowers. Oddly enough, the narrative carefully avoids specifying what people with the powers the main character uses to fight Variants are called. Also, apparently there's going to be some kind of interactive/mystery element. So far, I'm interested.

Are there any good romance games where you must choose between your LI and the world? This is an idea I find fascinating and you see it in various media in one form or another. The hero must choose between the love of his life or the world. By "the world" I don't just mean the literal world but more what it represents. What would you give up for the one person you love? Everything? Are there any VN's like this? Please no spoilers on exact details. I've seen this scenario in media where I couldn't actually control the story. I think it would be so much more meaningful in a romance game.

The Colonel posted:on ep 7 of umineko and i've really enjoyed it overall but uh I will always and frequently unhesitatingly claim that Umineko is the best VN; it's arguably the media opinion I feel the most confident with just stating outright with no qualifiers (and telling other people they're wrong for thinking otherwise, lol). I would go as far as to say that it's the best media falling within the broad category of "nerd media" (encompassing stuff like video games, anime, fantasy/sci-fi novels, etc). Ryuukishi07 understands and empathizes with human beings far better than the vast majority of writers in this domain. A lot of stuff is kind of difficult to understand on first playthrough (but in the good way where once you do understand it things "click" and nothing feels awkward), and I like this blog for going through the first four episodes (and some of the 5th) and commenting on things and how they connect to the series' mysteries, etc - https://goatsreadingseacats.tumblr.com/ (no one go to this link if they don't want spoilers) When I first read it, I noticed a lot of things that I completely missed on my first play-through (or that I didn't understand when they were happening). I mention this because it's entirely possible to miss a lot of important stuff while still enjoying the VN.
