I still remember being out of the military for about 8 years and then going to the MCB quantico MCX and seeing that trashy clothing styles never went out of fashion for the military.

Usually we all just tell everyone we are veterans the first day of class and that our opinions are superior to everyone's, including the professor

Another marine vet and I had been sitting next to each other in a Middle East history class without realizing each other was a vet until about 2/3 of the way into the semester when the professor was talking about Janissaries. Somebody asked what they spent their salaries on if they had to live in the barracks and weren’t allowed to marry, and the professor said “mostly alcohol and expensive clothes”. The other vet and I both laughed to ourselves and said “sounds about right”.

I wonder how they can justify this as a solution? Herp derp they're wearing masks! I hope they're wearing masks while they sleep in bunks in arms reach of each other.. and share the same latrine that they're cleaning without any protection or proper supplies.. and probably don't even have hand soap available!

I was one of those recruits that was diagnosed with pneumonia week 2 and only got two days of light duty, and then at my 8 week followup they said the pneumonia had cleared up but I had bronchitis still

Didn't clear up until my throat closed during the gas chamber and after I managed to stumble out of there with a closed throat I spent the next 6 hours coughing and could suddenly breathe again just in time for the Crucible

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Douglas

Paul Douglas had a Ph.D. in economics and was friends with the secretary of the navy from when they fought corruption together in Chicago. During ww2 at the age of 50 he used this connection to get his friend to let him join the marines. Except he didn't join as an officer, he loving enlisted. Sadly they didn't want to let a 50 year old private go overseas. So he got his friend to get him a commission so that he could go overseas. Once he got overseas he doesn't seem to have been given any real responsibility, so as a 50 year old captain he just gets his gun and walks to the front lines on Peleliu and just joins a rifle platoon because no one tells him no.

"On the second day of the Battle of Peleliu, Captain Douglas finally saw action when his unit waded into the fray. He earned a Bronze Star for carrying ammunition to the front lines under enemy fire and earned his first Purple Heart when he was grazed by shrapnel while carrying flamethrower ammunition to the front lines.[6] In that six-week battle, while investigating some random fire shootings, Douglas was shot at as he uncovered a two-foot-wide cave. He then killed the Japanese soldier inside at which point he wondered whether his enemy might be an economics professor from the University of Tokyo.[7]

A few months later, during the Battle of Okinawa, Douglas earned his second Purple Heart. A volunteer rifleman in an infantry platoon, he was helping to carry wounded from 3rd Battalion 5th Marines along the Naha-Shuri line when a burst of machine gun fire tore through his left arm, severing the main nerve and leaving it permanently disabled.[6]"

He went on to be a senator from Illinois after the war.

He is mentioned in "With the Old Breed" by Eugene Sledge. The marines are unloading ammo and supplies from landing vehicles under fire and they're all confused as hell when an old captain with gray hair comes up and starts helping.

I thought ”With the old breed” is a little clunky to read, and not very well written. It has good content, but would have benefited from a more skilled writer.

BANDAIDS DON'T FIX BULLET HOLES

Just got my first email from a prior service recruiter that:

1) had my first name spelled wrong
2) tried to tell me there are "opportunities for continued service" within my dead MOS that was supposed to have been gotten rid of multiple times since the end of the cold war
3) completely ignored the fact that I'm medically ineligible and am out of the Corps now because my surgery recovery completely ate up my reenlistment/lat-move window (because I was already halfway through my second limdu term before I even got my surgery that makes it so my femur stays in my hip socket)

Hey so my nephew decided that the best course of action for his adult life after high school was to enlist in the marines! Possibly infantry too but I'm not 100% on that. I do know that he's supposed to go through boot camp at 29 palms which doesn't seem like a picnic at all. I'd like to get him something as a graduation present to help him through boot camp. Besides a COVID-19 infection what would be the best thing to get him?

If you're asking about a high school graduation present then there isn't really anything because he won't be able to bring any belongings to boot camp.

I'm wondering if he's going to MOS school at 29 Palms and he's confusing that with boot camp? If that's the case then he's going to fix electronics most likely, not be infantry.

A box of dildos and candy delivered during boot with "YOUR DI IS A BOOT BITCH IDIOT" written on the outside.

Or you know, tell him to listen to all the people saying not to enlist, especially not right now, and as much as it pains me to say it, not combat arms.

Now THAT is a great gift from an uncle that rates a "who the gently caress are you again?" most of the time. Had no idea you couldn't have anything personal in boot camp, maybe I'll see if I can get him a gift certificate to a strip club or something
