It feels like I was standing my entire life and I just sat down
Good morning all. I have a separate phone for business and thinking of taking advantage of the dual-sim functionality in my iPhone XS. Had a couple questions that I'm hoping y'all can answer for me. I currently have T-mobile for my personal device (Simple Choice with Unlimited data, calls, text, etc) and want to turn in my work phone, but provide a different number for company use than my personal line. I'm given a stipend from my company for a phone if I turn in my work phone. I understand that I can specify by contact which line it will use.

My phone is unlocked (at least T-mobile processed it, but I haven't backed up and reset my phone yet because I'm lazy).

- Are there prepaid carriers that utilize esim right now? What's the cheapest talk/text plan that is compatible?
- Will iMessage still work for the secondary line if I only get a phone/text plan? Idea is to just use the data from my primary but wasn't sure if it'd kick over to the primary line data for those texts
- Is there any other known wankery that I should be aware of before jumping into this idea?

edit: Been doing a bit more digging and it appears that a good solution is to move my existing primary sim to the esim, and then just use the physical sim card slot as usual. Since many of the prepaid carries don't have esim support yet it seems. Also, t-mobile postpaid doesn't support it so it's not as easy as my adding a line for $20/mo.

Gummy Bear Heaven ... It's where I go when the world is too mean.
I'm looking at the $25/month promo at AT&T and have a couple of questions (it's been a while since I switched plans). I'm assuming that if I order the plan and a SIM card, the plan won't start counting down until I receive the card and activate/port to it. Is that correct?

https://www.att.com/buy/wireless/prepaid/select-plans

Under the terms, it says that the "months" renew every 30 days, so you get 360 days of service for $300. After that, once I go monthly, does AT&T continue to do 30 day months or do they renew on the same date every month?

I keep getting a "You are roaming" message when trying to make calls, even when I've got LTE data. Total Wireless or a Ph-1 issue?

Cricket: Started screaming my wife was tethering too much. I checked and they'd added a much better unlimited option.

$60/mo ($55 w/ auto pay)
Unlimited LTE*
15 GB Hotspot/Tethering
*Throttled during congestion

Switched both me and my wife over, total bill went from $70 (both on 5gig) to $90 (both on unlimited).

$45 apiece for unlimited and hotspot? Goddamn!

I think it's always 30 days from activation and thereafter, because they want to get that lump sum out of you every month.

Cricket charges me every month on the 8th...

If it renews every 30 days, that fucks with Android's usage tracker as you can only set it to reset on a specific date, not every X days.

Pricing model is extremely similar to Ting and they still use T-Mo as their GSM provider, but also offer CDMA coverage through Verizon; might be worth a look for anyone in here with CDMA devices. Hit me up in here or in PMs if y'all want a referral code!

US Mobile is pretty good in my experience. I've been a customer for about 4 years now and get good T-mobile coverage from them. It's a really good service if you just need enough data to check mail, navigate maps, and do minimal browsing along with minimal talk and text usage. I use about a gigabyte a month and my bill has never been more than $20.

Is about to die!
Had a group plan with Google Fi but we got bad service in our area, sometimes my wife on her iPhone couldn't make/receive calls in our house which is a bit of an issue, so just switched back to Cricket. With group discounts etc. ended up basically the same cost, but with data included so...

Fun fact, if you are trying to port out of Google Fi, if you are the group plan owner and click on each person on the group to get transfer info, it still just shows you the transfer info for your own number. People under your account need to log in themselves to get the info to transfer out.

Anyway I am just setting up the Cricket account info, apparently I can still enter a referral code for Cricket? So if anyone has one, I'll use the first one gets replied to.

Edit:
vv Ok done, think that worked?

Oh boy.

So: Visible will either be wonderful and everything will work as expected, or it will be terrible. There does not seem to be an inbetween.

Ordering a phone? Could work, could possibly work but silently fail somewhere on their end, could just fail because your bank flags them as fraud. My credit union said they've had "multiple incidents" (I'm guessing chargebacks because of their customer service and logistics issues) with Visible that led them to be autoflagged as fraud.

To actually order a phone, I had to: attempt to place an order, have it fail, have my credit union confirm it failed due to a fraud flag on their company, install the Visible app on my current phone, sign in, live chat with a rep, get a case created to "reset my account" because there was no way to retry the transaction, wait for the case to be worked, then try to order again.

I finally got a phone ordered via PayPal and.. nothing.

They can see my order was "submitted." They took my money. I have an order number. Their front line reps (chat from their app, text from your Visible line, or Twitter support only!) can't answer any advanced questions about it, they refer everything up to a "specialist" who will contact you in "24-48 hours" (this is a very optimistic timeframe), and that's it. Yikes.

Apparently, they have engaged a "third party to assist in locating my order" and are waiting to hear from them as of last night. I'm guessing this means their logistics fulfillment partner, but: what the gently caress, you can't even sell a phone right?

So now, several days and several hundred dollars later, I have no phone, no service, my number port is on hold until they can find my order, and I have no ETA on when that will be.

Lest you think I'm being overdramatic, peruse the Visible subreddit. There's more than one report there of orders getting "lost", promotional gift cards not being sent out, speed issues, network issues.. it is really kind of insane. Apparently it takes days to weeks for number ports and activations to work right for some people.

If I wasn't patient and actually wanting to get a look at Verizon coverage, I'd have bailed way before now. Granted, their coverage is LTE only, but given that Verizon CDMA is slated to be generally shut off by 2020, it shouldn't be too different coverage-wise.

One last thing: network deprioritization. Visible may have unlimited data with no speed cap, but Verizon has put them under some insane deprioritization rules. It's not uncommon for people in populous areas to post sub-megabit speedtest screenshots. I'm guessing that they get even less priority than other MVNOs, which is a little bizarre considering Visible is Verizon-owned.

tl;dr: Visible is a hot mess tarted up with some good pricing and promos. Roll the dice if you want, but is the $10 savings worth the possible grief?

To my understanding and recollection no. ATT gives priority to postpaid over prepaid and MVNOs but according to my recollection of an old statement/testing TMo treats everything the same.

OFC all of the providers now throttle when you hit your 4G limit of "unlimited".

Yeah, you're going to need an active account to port out.

Visible is a complete crapshoot when it comes to getting set up. I effortposted about my issues with them above but the tl;dr: on the resolution was “they refunded me, somehow sent me a phone any way, I had to fight to return the drat phone even though I was probably legally entitled to keep it, and they had to delete my account completely to allow me to try ordering and porting again (which somehow worked flawlessly that time).”

Also: the data deprioritization is massive. I’m talking as low as 200kbps down in busy places like sporting events, hospitals, and even traffic jams. I'm using an iPhone 11, so it's not that I've got a cheap phone with Category 2 LTE speeds. I did a side by side comparison with T-Mobile in the same spots and it was way faster, and Verizon doesn't have capacity issues I'm aware of in my area so they just throttle you that hard. Still, it might be worth it for $25 a month.

They actually came through on Monday, I got an email saying my port info was wrong, so I resubmitted it and was online within 20 minutes. I've already hot spotted 200GB just downloading steam games and streaming while using another phone I got through them a week before, seems to be the same speed as Straight Talk was, without having to worry about Straight Talk shutting me off after 60GB randomly when they decide I'm suddenly breaking ToS. That said I do live in the middle of bumfuck nowhere so that could be why I'm not getting deprioritized so hard.

Ah, that’s great! Glad you go it working without having to burn cash on more Straight Talk.

Sounds like you’re in an ideal situation for Visible - not enough load on your local towers for it to throttle you and have a need for their unlimited perks like the hotspot. I don’t think I’ve come across anyone who’s said anything about getting hit with a ToS for overuse - I imagine they’d just throttle you.

If you’re not in one yet, hit up the VisiblePartyPay and Visible subreddits and hop into a party with other people. I’m in a full party with other internet randos right now, so I can’t invite you to mine. You can see each other’s first names, area codes, and the last 4 digits of the phone number, but you’re not obligated to each other in any way bill wise. It’s the weirdest discounting scheme since Sprint’s Framily plans, but I can’t really complain about getting $15 off a month without sharing any obligations.

If you go to their prepaid website, they advertise this plan for $20 off with auto-pay, but there doesn't seem any way for me to do it. Does anyone know if there's a way for existing accounts to get this discount? Also, is that discount only for the first month?

Edit: Okay so after calling and eventually getting in contact with a live person, this promotion is only for if you start a new account, which I suspected, but the discounted rate is monthly. I do highly recommend this plan. I live in a populated area and almost never have issues with coverage or data speed. Unlimited for $45 a month with no speed cap and only minor throttling occasionally is a steal.

Thats tempting. I have the $25/month for 12gb mint prepaid but tmobile just bought sprint and my throttling in busy areas has made the service useless when I go to an event. I didn't have this problem when I was on cricket since it seems that ATT isn't as congested as it once was from it being the only network with iphones.

You guys aren't going to believe this, but that guy is our games teacher.
Cricket and AT&T Prepaid are both doing a promo plan with unlimited talk and text and 2GB high speed data for $15/month. This is clearly a reaction to T-Mobile's similar plan, though this one is better because it throttles you when you reach the data cap instead of cutting you off completely like the T-Mobile plan. The differences between the Cricket and AT&T plans seem to be that the Cricket plan has taxes included but is subject to their normal restrictions (8 Mbps speed cap, no hotspot) while the AT&T plan does not include taxes but does include hotspot, data rollover (for 1 month), and no speed cap.
