I'm late to the party. Everywhere has old people, why did Italy get destroyed to the point of closing?

They didn't test enough up front in order to track and quarantine. Basically, they made all the mistakes that the US is making.

Italy did over 14 times the swab tests the rest of EU did, but it also has one of the oldest populations in the world and a population density of 206 per squared km vs, say, 36 in the US.

It is pretty sad that basketball being canceled is the reality check a lot of people need on the situation, but now that it's in everyone's faces, awareness and sanitary practices should increase. This thread has been great for keeping up on the latest news.

I'm kinda wondering if I'm short of breath or not. It's not bad enough that I feel sure about it. I have a bit of a runny nose too. Aside from that though I have nothing else going on wise?

Italy has a lot of old people who spend all their time hanging out together in groups and touching each other, and when they were told they should stop, they didn't because telling a bunch of 80 year olds they have to stop engaging in their own culture simply won't happen.

Day Man posted:They still didn't close everything down quickly enough. People kept traveling all over even after community transmission was obvious. No one "closed everything down quickly enough" in the west, and Italy is the only country that literally closed everything down as soon as it was the reasonable thing to do. So far only Japan and South Korea have been (it seems) successful in containing the virus. It was worth all of our parents dying, to bring awareness of pangolins and how freaking amazing they are, like super armadillos without the leprosy and with the cuteness of a baby sloth and a wombat or smth. Such good creatures I hope they won't be killed as revenge. 💔 at least all the politicians will be gone.

12 reported cases in Mexico. Those 5 new ones were found out all today. All of them people who traveled to Spain, Italy and the USA. And it seems whole dance studio crew who were on a tour through Italy this week got thrown in quarantine as soon as they got out of their plane lol It was funny reading the wikipedia saying 9 cases, a second later edited to 11, going to a newspaper's page clicking on the "11 CONFIRMED CASES!" link and seeing that they had quickly updated the headline to 12. Ha. ha. Ha.

People joke but if you're honestly prone to anxiety/panic, asking your psychiatrist for crisis meds would not be a terrible idea. With shortness of breath being so ubiquitous with both, and panic having the lovely 'I am literally dying' certainty attached to it, being able to clearly and accurately report the status of your lungs w/o panic interference could free up a bed if it turns out to be a very understandable freakout.
