I explained that I had been aware of btc since its price was below a dollar and then spent 20 minutes running him through dozens and dozens and dozens of reasons why if I had invested then my money would've been stolen, or lost, or audited, or held, or all sorts of things. I think I got to like #7 or #8 before he just started straight lmaoing, which he continued to do all the way to the end. I saved the "bitcoin miner gives himself brain damage via heatstroke" story for the end.

Mt. Gox used to be THE exchange, and that one was hacked thoroughly.

It is true that if you held your coins in a very specific way you'd still have them now, but it's only now in hindsight that we know what that very specific way was. If I weren't a victim of Mark Did Nothing Wrong I would've lost them in a hard drive failure, or my real actual money would've been put at risk because Canadian banks weren't tolerating any sort of crypto poo poo At All for a very long time and would straight up drop you if they suspected you were doing it. Or Trendon Shavers, if I was really stupid. Or some fuckin wallet app hack, of which there were at least dozens. Or I would've lost my money to that stupid Europe guy having his exchange on an Amazon instance. We veterans of the bitcoin threads know now exactly what the path was to keep the coins safe, but it wasn't nearly as clear back then, and with crypto if you make one mistake you're permanently and irrevocably mega-hosed. More of us would be broke than lambo. A lot more. edit: I lost a bunch of good pictures to a USB stick failure just last week, lots of coiners lose their loving shirt to a minor thing like that

Even if I had known the proper path to keep my bitcoins super supreme safe, and the proper path to keep my bank from finding out I own them, because my bank in particular does not tolerate crypto poo poo whatsoever, who's to say I don't do what dog-dick coffee table man Rassah did and cash out my initial pile at 40 bucks each to buy a Nissan 40 bucks a bitcoin was pretty fuckin good back then, nearly all-time high, and there was no way of knowing where it would go from there at the time, it went back down to like three dollars for a while after that

And there are plenty of non-child-porn securities that jumped up in price in the interim. You could have brought Apple, or Tesla or Shopify and made out like bandits. You could have invested in an asset that doesn't trigger a billion audits. You could have done it without fear that your investment will literally disappear into the dark because of someone loving up something as basic as forgetting to buy persistent storage on their Amazon cloud server. You could have done it that doesn't cause dozens of tax-triggered events leaving you holding a tax bill that you can't pay because you don't understand cost-basis and transactional tax liability. Were I prescient I'd rather have a lottery ticket, at least that enables me to keep straight a few numbers and then I'm assured payment by an entity that can pay.

When bitcoin was new even a lot of the coiners themselves didn't take takes like "1 million by 2020" seriously. Some people had those takes but they weren't really the majority. Mark's fake buy walls, automated wash trades and convenient outages (what Robinhood is doing right now, in fact) were absolutely small potatoes compared to the unmitigated unironic unpredicted fraud scheme turbo-mode known as Tether, which came later.

The real problem with the idea of "what if I'd bought bitcoins 8 years ago" isn't that you might have had them lost or stolen, it's that you'd be infected with major brainworms by now. You wouldn't be cashing them out at $10k and laughing about how your let's play bitcoin forum joke turned into a big windfall. you'd be hodling them and raving about the impending collapse of the fed and our need for purestrain gold you'd be the guy with millions in bitcoins (on paper) who wanted a secret tunnel under his basement and killed the kid doing the digging you'd be ghosTTy plowing money into wack altcoin derivatives and losing it all

A lot of people seem to be jumping in the thread because the number go down. Please remember: Bitcoin is for two types of people: 1 - stupid people. These are people who have no idea what bitcoin is and how much damage is is causing the environment. 2 - assholes. They don't give a poo poo about anyone but themselves. They happily take advantage of the stupid people. That's it. Bitcoin is not an investment. It's not a thing at all. It's the stock market at its absolute worst. There is no company that is being propped up by the investment. No new warehouses are being built. No workers are being hired. No goods are being produced. Crypto is not the future. It's a thought experiment gone bad. And it's a honeypot for druggies and pedos. Don't buy crypto. Don't be a pedo.

It's good that ebay is banning it. A lot of lovely people went out and cleared out stores of hand sanitizer and then started scalping on Ebay. Ebay is poo poo, too. It basically enabled scalping culture. At least they finally did something about it. Now they just need to stop newer items from being sold above retail.
