Yeah, I have pretty strict limits about what I buy. It's TV series that really get me, it takes me forever to watch an entire season let alone an entire series. I jump around too much in what I want to watch most of the time. But I only buy things that I'm going to watch multiple times, or things that aren't available in HD/remastered on rental services for a reasonable price. And occasionally an old favorite under $5.

I slide my unwatched discs out to the edge of the shelf so they stick out from the rest. According to Letterboxd I own 92 unwatched films, which is about 10% of my collection. The majority of those are from big box sets that I'm still working my way through (Bergman, Godzilla, Zatoichi), a few are from crappy multi-packs that I will probably never actually watch, and maybe 5 are actual standalone discs I haven't gotten to yet.ChazTurbo posted:Tv series are the most difficult for me to start up. - Housekeeping is loving amazing. Criterion recently put out Local Hero by the same director (Bill Forsyth); if you liked that, or if you like weird Altman like 3 Women or Images, or if you just generally like incredibly disquieting movies, put Housekeeping at the top of your list. - I bought Little Murders blind and it knocked me the gently caress out. Same energy as those mid-70s conspiracy thrillers like Klute and Parallax View and 3 Days of the Condor. - Jonathan Rosenbaum has been recommending The 5000 Fingers Of Dr. T for decades, so when I saw they were releasing it I decided to take the plunge. I was expecting it to be weird (it's a musical written by Dr. Seuss) but it ended up being a thousand times stranger and more interesting than I had expected. Recommended if you like stuff like Fantastic Planet.

Here's my takes on all the stuff I have from them so far except for Fat City and Five Tall Tales (five Budd Boetticher/Randolph Scott westerns) since they're the only ones I haven't watched in my collection yet... 10 Rillington Place - One of the creepiest films I've ever seen, based on court transcripts of serial killer John Christie. Richard Attenburough is unsettling as Christie. Great disc, as the film has an "antique" look by design. 4K restoration. Samuel Fuller at Columbia - While only two films of the seven in the set were directed by Fuller, the five films written or based upon his novels/stories are fun. The highlights besides Underworld USA and The Crimson Kimono are It Happened in Hollywood (only 57 min long and has a brilliant scene featuring Hollywood actor stand-ins that's like a cartoon), Power of the Press, and Scandal Sheet. One highlight of the extras are 7 1/2 hours of uncut interview rushes of Sam Fuller as interviewed by Tim Robbins. William Castle at Columbia (Vols. 1 and 2) - These have both some of his most iconic films (The Tingler, 13 Ghosts, Strait-Jacket), but also some surprises. Mr. Sardonicus is a great body horror film and I think Homicidal is almost as great as Psycho in terms of thematic content (makes Dressed to Kill look archaic and gross). The Old Dark House and ZOTZ! are pretty funny and silly, plus 13 Frightened Girls is a decent spy thriller. This also has a feature-length doc on Castle, plus multiple viewing options - including The Tingler with a fully restored "special" sequence (both visual and aural). These two volumes are probably the most essential to grab before they go OOP. Experiment in Terror - Obviously an inspiration for Twin Peaks, great restoration, Blake Edwards noir with a great Mancini score. The Big Heat - Essential Lang noir, 4K restoration Age of Consent - Michael Powell's unusual film is an early starring role for Helen Mirren (often undressed) with veteran James Mason. Has the director's and theatrical cuts. Night of the Demon - One of the best British horror movies, has half a dozen cuts, and tons of extras. Hardcore - Dark, disturbing take on the porn industry by Paul Schrader. Great leading role by George C. Scott, Peter Boyle hasn't played a slimier character.

Oh man, I've been waiting for them to put out V: The Final Battle. especially since someone borrowed my DVD and never gave it back. The two V mini series rule, even if the ending is kind of an annoying deus ex machina. The remake is terrible and I never saw the other 80s thing that was an attempt to make it an on going series but I've never heard good things.

Yeah put me down as glad about V The Final Battle too. Last years release of the original miniseries was decent, even if the A/R caused some grief around the net. Everything you heard about the actual series is true, the quality takes a massive cliff dive.

Warner Archive Podcast had a special episode with Kenneth Johnson and he confirmed that V was shot for 1.85:1 and mixed for stereo because he knew it was going to get a theatrical release outside the US. He didn't like how the pilot for The Incredible Hulk was shown theatrically overseas cropped to widescreen since it was filmed specifically for TV.

Yeah that was the argument that was brought up, and lots of people think he’s full of poo poo. They wanted the version that was how they first saw it, and it went on and on. I watched in 4:3 originally but I rewatched it in 16:9 more times, so I don’t personally care a huge amount. I’m guessing TFB will also be 16:9, but they won’t have that ‘original intent’ thing as they knew full well it was only going to be aired on TV.

They're really good about "unusual" aspect ratios. For example, the Rankin-Bass animated feature Flight of Dragons was made as a theatrical feature and ultimately released as a TV movie, but the Blu-ray is in the original widescreen (with the standard def 4x3 version as an extra on the disc). Likewise, a lot of 50s "transition era" films in 2.55:1, 2.00:1, 1.66:1, or 1.75:1 are in those aspect ratios when necessary instead of plain 16x9 or 2.35:1.
