That dog doesn't understand how fabulous it is that the cat could just stare at it for an hour. Shelties are just that fabulous.

in regards to the weird cat why does it seem like cats are smarter than the paws they're given? it's like they're aware of the concept of hands, wish they had hands, but are stuck with paws and have to compromise with what they have. Automata 10 Pack has a new favorite as of 21:09 on Mar 13, 2020 |

Because we'd all be dead & they'd be eating like kings. Be grateful that they don't have opposable thumbs.

Speaking of which I’ve always wondered, do 6-pawed cats have any advantage over 5-pawed? Or is it a useless mutation?

Anecdotally, yeah, they can be really ingenious with those extra toes. I don't think I've ever seen a formal study on that, though. Someone should, if it hasn't been done before.

My five toed cat's thumb is mostly useless for her, and the front left actually has a split claw we have to watch to make sure it doesn't cause problems for her. So anecdotal they're useless

Real talk though, it's a pain to keep pet turtles' shells from getting completely covered with algae. I assume that's not a problem for tortoises though.

World Famous W posted:Posting my mutant kitty, Nori I was adopted by a polydactyl kitty several years ago. He definitely managed to use his extra thumbs to hold onto things much more effectively than my other, normal pawed cats. Not that the thumbs were opposable, but they did seem to give him much more spikey surface area to grab with when he flexed his paws.

The evolutionary advantage of a thumbcat is that they're cuter and have extra beans for squishing.

ILL Machina posted:https://i.imgur.com/bUuAcHx.gifv One of the greatest moments I've ever seen on a football pitch was at a pre-season friendly between Stevenage (little non-league club just outside London) and West Ham (Premiership team) at Stevenage. The mascots* were the groundskeepers sons, around 10, 8 and 6 - the two older boys were the Stevenage mascots and the youngest the West Ham one. At half time they were allowed out on the pitch to have a kickaround, and the two older boys were doing what all older brothers would do in that situation - just passing the ball around the little one, daring him to try and get it off them. After a minute or two of this (and the Stevenage fans starting to do the "Ole!" thing every time they passed it) the little one unleashed a loving devastating studs-up two-footed tackle at about groin height on the oldest brother, to a massive roar from the (much larger) West Ham contingent. He then, roared on by the entire crowd, ran at the goal, pursued by the middle brother, and scored to easily the loudest cheer of the night. It's still one of the happy places i go to in my head while watching West Ham piss away a lead. * For those who don't have them in the sports they watch - football clubs have mascots (originally one per team, but nowadays one per player) who are kids who walk out onto the pitch with them dressed in full kit. It's a big thing, the kids get to meet the players, get their pictures taken at the ground, etc, so of course clubs make parents pay stupid loving money for it. For some non-text content, here's a Chelsea mascot mugging off Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8J34YiZmqeI
