In the spirit of Reply All’s made up holiday, Email Debt Forgiveness Day, I decided it’s time for us in the Somethingawful dot com Games Forum to do a little personal backlog spring cleaning ourselves...with a twist! Here’s how it’s going to work… What do I do 1. Dig out your backlog, those poor poor games that have been sitting purchased and unplayed and ignored. 2. Write a post in this thread about what game you’re giving up on (for now at least, this is supposed to be fun and you can play it if you end up wanting to play it, I don’t care I’m not your parent or legal guardian) 3. Slam the post button. Feel a slight weight off your shoulders. Have a great rest of your day Wait I thought there was going to be toxxing...and a twist? Toxxing. The twist is toxxing. It’s right in the thread title! If you’re feeling adequately spicy then put your on the line and that you will finish a game by a certain date! I'll keep track of everything up here for everyone too! Of course, I will get the ball moving on both a backlog forgiveness and a toxx. I’ll give up on playing all of the Bioshocks after Bioshock 1. I was late to the party and while Bioshock did some cool narrative stuff there are probably better immersive sims to be playing, not to mention better shooters and games with more coherent politics! I’m giving up on Bioshock and I’m okay with that. And because I came up with the idea: I will play through Prey (2017) by the end of June 2020

Is "finished" self-defined? I rarely reach the end victory credits of even games I love. Played Morrowind heaps of hours across many characters and years, but I only know the final boss and ending from watching speedruns. And if it is permitted, I'd toxx for Sekiro by the end of Autumn. My hands will be softened by months of cozying up in Animal Crossing and Sekiro has already been collecting dust since the first weeks after launch. I am stuck at the very last boss, thoroughly cleared everything else in the game, I was making progress, could reliably get through the first phase handily after a while but one night I got closer than ever but totally panicked and flubbed it on the newest phase and then suddenly regressed and struggled with the first phase all over again. I have it sitting there, in it's original un-updated form just waiting for me to bring honor to my family. If that's pushing it, then toxx me for Bayonetta by EoY. Bought it a long time ago, not even on sale I don't think, and somehow never even installed it.

I am a tremendously shameful gamer with many games started and left an hour or two, or even 40% of the way in. My current backlog of games I need to finish consists of: Metal Gear Solid Mario Odyssey Last Guardian Last of Us Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Return of the Obra Dinn Yakuza Kiwami 2 Rage 2 Disco Elysium Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe Dishonoured The Witcher III Rise of the Tombraider ADDED: Death Stranding Persona 5 And those are just off the top of my head. I bet if I was to look at the icons on my PS4 and Switch or the list on my steam account, there would be much more that I am forgetting. All of them I got a portion of the way in and then stopped. Some I enjoyed much more than others, some I think I was not in the right frame of mind, some just fell away. I am going to make it my mission to finish these. One by one and using this thread to help me. I am going to do two to start one (one I can only play when Lady VG is around and the other for solo gaming). So I WILL play and finish The Last Guardian (with Lady VG) and will stream myself every time, starting this evening March 11th 7:30pm GMT. This will happen every wednesday until it is finished and people watching me helps spur me on and Lady VG enjoys it a ton too. Solo I WILL play and finish Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild. I take a long time to get through games because I am quite bad at it so no idea how long it will take, but I will give updates. It was due to this thread idea that I started it from scratch again two nights ago and my current location is having just finished the Great Plateau. Once these two are done, I will move onto something else, but my ultimate aim is to complete (as in reach the end or 100% if I end up falling in love) with all games on that list above by the end of 2020. I have 9 months. This might be enough but I honestly am not sure. We shall see!

It feels like it has to be somewhat self-reported one way or another and you can really define that how you want. It’s more about having an incentive to get some gaming done that you’ve wanted to get done but haven’t for whatever reason. I put mine as “see credits” because I’m not the kind of person to go back into a game and play side stuff once I finish the main game. Whatever works for you, really!

I just hope FF7 Remake and Trials of Mana, and my job don't interfere with this.

alright, I'm about to spend 3 weeks almost entirely in my home, and my poor Playstation that I bought a few months back has been woefully underused, so i'm gonna put a bit of a fire under my rear end: I will finish ONE (1) of the following seven games by the end of April: The Last of Us Remastered, Spider-Man, Control, God of War, Astro Bot Rescue Mission, Tetris Effect, The Outer Wilds I've started all of them and I'm about half-way through Spider-Man, Control and Outer Wilds and within the first few hours of the rest, so I think finishing one of them is a reasonable goal. I finally got the Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection working, but I keep getting distracted by FFXIV. So here's a toxx with my account on the line. My goal is to finish the entire collection before the end of March. There's an achievement for doing so, which I'll use as proof of completion. Probably really strict of a time limit, but I've already finished one game in the collection and I should focus on just enjoying it rather than trying to perfect it.

not doing a toxx but I have some backlog games that I will never play but also can't remove from my steam library because they were part of bundles/collections from the older days of Steam sales: Company of Heroes series Darwinia Droplitz The Path Telltale Texas Hold 'Em Escape Rosecliff Island and then I'll go ahead and throw these on the forgiveness pile as well: Artemis Spaceship Bridge Simulator: this was going to be a game me and my friends would play when we lived long distances from each other. now we live together. oops Crayon Physics Deluxe: i think the guy who made this turned out to be a shithead but also it's boring God Mode: a bad arena shooter Robot Roller Derby Disco Dodgeball: just not into multiplayer-only games anymore you may thank me for ruining your excel/openoffice cell lengths

I was dithering for such a long time on whether to play the game, knowing that I might not like the style of the game, but perhaps I should give it a shot, but from what I've seen the writing style doesn't appeal to me, but then I installed it and it wasn't horrible, yet there is the knowledge of some abhorrent behavior from the writer, and I'll likely get sick of it, and I just want to give up now... I'm never going to play Sunless Sea. Recently I worked down my collection of unplayed stuff to under 40, and I've kept track of the stuff I completed or gave up on, sorted by genre ('completed' including either games fully gone through, or ones that I feel I did 'enough' in, e.g. finishing at least one campaign or some such. Not included are three games that were too buggy to finish, but I might have if they didn't crash): pre:ALL STR RPG ADV ACT SIM RTS Played 76 23 8 14 7 12 12 Compl. 53 18 6 14 3 4 11 Ratio 69.7% 78.3% 75.0% 100.0% 42.9% 33.3% 91.7%

I unfortunately had to miss a streaming session this wednesday due to Coronavirus. Lady VG is self isolating (and by extension me) and she was so poorly that I did not want to stream without her. However, this does mean a lot more time to game and I am making great progress on Breath of the Wild. I also completed project warlock and that was not even on the list!

I stare at computers all day for work and then I get home and I don't want to play games because it's just more staring at computers but my quarantined wife won't shut up about Stardew Valley and apparently there's multiplayer. She says "finish all of the community center bundles by May 1, 2020". So I guess that's my - 30 bundles in 30-ish days? SDV has been sitting in my collection forever so I guess it's probably time. Updates 3/29 - Played until 2AM last night and all I have to show for it are some potatoes and a chicken coop. Zero progress on the bundles. 3/30 - Spring foraging bundle done (1). I'm an idiot and sold some gold parsnips when I should've saved them since they're apparently used in another bundle. 4/01 - Bat cave option feels like it is the way to go? Spring crops done (2). Summer foraging done (3). Just starting fishing and the mines right now. 4/02 - Looks like I am going to end up one gold parsnip short of finishing the Quality Crops Bundle this year. Finished the smallest vault bundle (4). My idiot chicken finally laid an egg. 4/03 - Work was stupid so went and played with my farm during lunch. Trying to save up to upgrade the coop so I can turn my black chicken egg into a black chicken. River Fish bundle is done (5). 4/06 - Knocked out a few over the weekend. Lake Fish Bundle (6), Ocean Fish Bundle (7), Blacksmith's Bundle (8), and the 5k Vault Bundle (9). Might actually have more done, I just have to organize all my chests better. 4/10 - Fall foraging and the Fodder bundle are done (10 and 11). Bat cave was definitely the way to go. Going into Winter of the first year. Also got my rear end handed to me in the mines. 4/12 - Geologist bundle is finally done (12). Wasted like an hour trying to mine a fire quartz before realizing they just spawn on the floor once you get deep enough in the mines. 4/13 - Zero progress. I think I have to finish like one bundle per day from here on out. 4/15 - Winter foraging is done (13). Crab pot is done (14). I feel like I am really close to getting the aquarium fixed but some of these loving fish are impossible. 4/23 - Turns out fish are impossible because a bunch of them are weather- and/or season-dependent. Despite that, killed it this week: Night fish (15), construction (16), quality crops (17), artisan stuff (18), animal stuff (19), 10k vault bundle (20), and fall crops (21) are done. Nine bundles left. Seven days. Still haven't gotten to the desert and I think I need stuff from there to finish everything. 4/27 - Summer crops done (22) thanks to weird cart lady. I am also an idiot because I didn't realize that not all bundles require all the things and that I could have been turning them in whenever - not just when I actually had everything the bundle needed. As a result, exotic foraging is done (23), adventurers is done (24), and I sold off my dumb animals for the 25k bundle (25). 4/29 - Caught the sand fish for the last aquarium bundle (26), pig finally turned up a truffle for the chefs bundle (27). Repaired the beach bridge and grabbed a sea urchin for the dye bundle (28). Still waiting on my bottle of wine to finish aging and still haven't found a nautilus shell for the last two bundles. 4/30 - Figured out I could smack the wine cask to get the bottle back and that I don't have to wait for it to purple-ize. So that bundle is done (29). Grinding that shell right now - wake up, walk to beach, no shell, walk to farm, go to sleep, repeat... 4/30 part 2 - got the shell. gently caress you shell. 30 of 30 done and I'm totally burned out on this game. 53 loving hours. This sounds fun. I built a PC recently after watching many, many hours of Dark Souls 3 and Cuphead playthroughs online. I haven't played games much since the early 2000s, but watching all those playthroughs convinced me that I would be good at those games despite never being really good at games in the first place. Spoiler: I loving suck at both of these games. They still hold a ton of allure to me even though they are punishingly difficult for me, a total retard baby with poor motor control. So let it be known that I will finish DS3 and Cuphead by the end of the year or my name shall be mud and my progeny shall be deformed. I'm still dicking around on the High Walls of Lothric in DS3 and I'm mostly done with the 1st island in Cuphead. Ring Fit Adventure is my only source of exercise in these trying times, and my enthusiasm for it is floundering. I'm currently on world 9 of 20; my is that I'll finish all levels in all 20 worlds on a difficulty of at least 20 before June 1st, 2020, with photographic proof. This toxx does NOT include completing all requests. Should I fail I will forever carry the shame of not caring for my health *or* the expensive video games I buy and never complete.

I mean idk about Cuphead, but DS3 was brutal for me even after platinuming Bloodborne, Lothric Castle is absurdly difficult, and From games tend to throw you in the deep end and let you figure it out, but once you get it you shouldn’t really struggle much for the rest of the game. Protip: remember you can always just sprint past enemies, or if a regular enemy is messing you up, just back off. I literally forget this every time I play a Souls game for the first time, and I’ve beaten all of them and Sekiro, and it’s true for every one in the series.

Thanks, that's encouraging to hear. I feel like I'm getting marginally better. I've heard that advice about just skipping enemies that are giving you trouble before, but it's a hard pill for me to swallow. There's that enemy outside of Firelink Shrine with the uchigatana and it bothers me to no end that I can't kill him. I've moved on, but holy hell that irritates me. Update: stomped his bitch rear end. Probably took me 15 tries, but I’ve started to realize how important dodging/rolling is in this game. In retrospect, I probably just could have sunk arrows into his face since I was able to make the tree jump onto the roof, but killing him up close was more satisfying. And I guess I can summon him for a later boss fight so that’s kind of cool. fuckwolf fucked around with this message at 03:09 on Apr 9, 2020 |
