So yesterday I learned that Nobuo Uematsu composed on and directly sampled from a Roland SC88 Pro for Final Fantasy 7 and 8. Now I really want to get one or a software equivalent

sampled from? a roland sc88 is just a sample playback module, there's no synthesis going on there at all. uematsu recorded playback from that module for the soundtrack, and that's it.

Roland sells SCVA as part of Roland Cloud and also sometimes standalone but be warned it's a buggy piece of hot

the real hardware isnt actually that much better tho lol

No, FF7's sound data is all sequence, not CD Audio, with a custom playback engine programmed by Minoru Akao.

Uematsu likely did a lot of the composition & programming on the SC88Pro, and then Akao helped him convert it all to the MIDI sequence format used by the FF7 engine.

A majority of the samples used at runtime are Roland, but there's some other samples in there as well, like E-MU and Kurzweil, according to Hexagon12's spreadsheet

I like these. How did you build your plate reverb?

So basically I got a piece of sheet steel from home depot. I went through their lil bin and tapped all the sheets with a key until I got one with a lil ring to it.

Then I built a plywood frame, basically gluing 3 strips of plywood per side cut to make bridle joints. I drilled some holes in the frame to get some big bolts in there, and used some s hooks to strectch out the plate inside the frame, you can tighten the bolts to increase the tension in the plate, I think there is a point in one of the demo files where I do it and you can hear it a bit. Then I glued a crossbar to the middle of the frame and added a lil brace that holds a driver against the plate. I got the driver and a 35w mini amp for it off amazon. Finally I just attached a couple of piezo mics with some double sided tape.

I took it apart to try and fix up some stuff and add pre-amps to the contact mics but then I just sorta left it sitting around in my garage.

it's a shame general midi is such a basic standard, once midi synths started supporting insert effects like distortions, wahs, rotary speakers and the like it made a huge difference but you had to write your music to target a specific device

Oh poo poo, I didn’t realise it was real! That’s really cool.

I’ve built a few reverbs in Reaktor that sounds pretty nice but it’s nothing like something physical you can flick with your fingers.

I’ve got a couple spring reverbs I want to take apart though, I want to attach the transducers to parts of a piano because the tuned/harmonic reverb from that would be lush. Technically you could sample an IR and use it in a convolution reverb but it’s not as fun.

MIDI was always meant as a control protocol, interoperability of music data *between* instruments was never really a goal.

Eric Persing and the rest of the team did some incredible work on the Roland sound equipment, to the point where that internal sound library is still used, decades after. Sound Canvas always was sort of a cheap line.

In terms of sound quality, it goes: Roland S Samplers > SRX boards > SR-JV80 boards > XV/Fantom/JV > Sound Canvas

oh yeah, here is a picture of what's sitting around in the garage, the mouse is on there to give a sense of size. Normally the driver would be in that little circular hole but I took it out for some reason I don't remember. Also one of the contact mics fell off and I need to re-attach it.

I've been playing with the freakshow industries plugins and I thought they were dumb until I put my drums through backmask and then my bass arp through dumpster fire and then the lead through mishby

What I'm saying is it's really fun to make poo poo get weird. I wonder if they use these on the American Horror Story intro

I was supposed to be playing a show tonight but it got cancelled by COVID-19. So it looks like the guys promoting it are gonna do a stream thing. I'm gonna be playing my old "chiptune" (In quotes because I don't actually use any vintage hardware and don't sound particularly accurate either) sets, it could be fun if any of y'all wanna watch it. The rest of the show is a few chip acts from texas and or california of various types.

stuff should be kicking off around 9pm central. I should be going on around 9:45.

looks pretty dope, I do love a good tracker, it's a pretty great way to display stuff once you get used to reading it.

I worry about those buttons though, they look janky. I wonder why musical gear doesn't try and use mechanical keyboard switches, they're pretty cheap now and real nice.

is it sample based or physically modelled? I mucked around with a demo of a physically modelled piano years ago and it was absolutely nuts how realistic it was. Pianos aren't very forgiving if you can't right good tunes though so I steer clear of them.

idk but it sounds very good. ableton used to have one built in that was sample based, I think it just had one sample per octave and blended between samples at the edges of each octave

it sounded incredibly real. as does this one.

any of y'all have recs for plugins I can send my guitar through? I'm more interested in effects than amp/cab modeling but both are cool. I have the free version of guitar rig 5 and it seems neat; I don't want to spend much (definitely under $50 but free would be much better) cause I bought a copy of ableton, so I'm mostly done buying music stuff for a couple months

I'm hoping that ms jones gets me a midi controller for my birthday

i love a nice dnb mix, i especially loved some tracks off your ultrawizardsword mix many years back

not so much time to listen on a weekend, but i will try to remember to give a thorough listen tomorrow when working

edit: i also set up a ninjam server running on my raspberry pi the other day. we tried it out with a friend from over in germany and it was pretty neat cranking out some standard 120 bpm techno house for hours with our respective space stations. i wish this became a weekly thing, it's so good for building skills to be fast when messing around on the equipment while also taking the pressure off because the other guy is also working to make it sound interesting
