The TLDR is things are moving forward as usual, but if you're sick stay home, and don't share water bottles. Ultimate players are full of people who are at the least amount of risk, and it's not like these things draw a crowd, so it seems like a safe position to take.

This was useful, and was shared by other leagues it would seem.

Alas I got word that we're cancelling everything for a month minimum. Not unexpected and quite reasonable, but a huge bummer nonetheless.

Ultimate Chicago did just send another email that they’re having an emergency board meeting and will have another email out Sunday, so they could be postponing too. Normal spring season starts in two weeks I think, so they could just cancel the first couple of weeks.

Are they still playing golf? You don't have to be near anyone for that.

Although the real answer to that is probably that bars/restaurants are probably less concerned about what to put on the tv and more about a community of people scared to hang out in crowds of strangers and drink/eat stuff prepared by strangers. That's actually something I seriously need to get more careful about.

Coming back to play in empty arenas may make the most sense. The risk for players and even the majority of personnel is pretty low and some basic precautions would go a long way. Of course, this will depend on what the players feel comfortable with vs their share of the revenue recouped (though I don't know the impact of TV revenue with no games).

I can't see cramming 10,000+ people in an arena being a good idea in 30 days, but who knows.

Hey Amerigoons.

One sport is going ahead, for better or worse amidst this Corvid-19 pandemic, with the 2020 season of Australian Rules Football, the AFL (Australian Football League) kicking off tomorrow night.

After much umm-ing and ahh-ing 18 clubs, doctors, federal and state governments and league officials decided to go ahead with Round 1 of the season in locked out stadiums with no crowds. The first game is the traditional season operner between reigning premiers Richmond Tigers vs Carlton at the Melbourne Cricket Ground with a capacity of 100k... but nobody will be there except the players and the cameramen.

Instead of 22 games played over a 23 round (plus a bye) Home & Away season, the league will shorten it to 17 rounds so each team plays eachother once, if they are able, to complete the 2020 season within the next 40 weeks. They will also shorten the 20 minute quarters plus time on (usually 30min quarters) to 16.5 minutes plus time on for stoppages, in a bid to reduce time between rounds/games and knock out as many games as possible before the inevitable suspension of the season once a single player/club staff out of the ~700 player league tests positive.

Anyway, inviting you all to watch LIVE SPORTS IN THE YEAR 2020 with us over in the AFL thread: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3912472&pagenumber=1

And here is a 5 minute primer aimed at americans to help explain our crazy sport of chaosball/calvinball/aerial ping pong: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMZYZcoAcU0

3 live games per week air in various countries, but that may change now that the world has next to no live sports for 2020, perhaps all games will end up on a main channel somewhere. This is how you officially watch all games in the subscription service (https://www.watchafl.com.au) but it is expensive and I'm sure there will be some dodgy streams of games online.

Otherwise here are the broadcast times for round 1 which begins tomorrow (21 hours from this post) that I could find quickly online:

USA - Fox Soccer+ or Fox Soccer 2: Thursday 19th 7:00 AM Eastern Australian Rules Football: Richmond vs. Carlton || Friday 20th: 12:30 AM AFLW Australian Rules Football Gold Coast Suns vs. West Coast Eagles, 2:30 AM AFLW Australian Rules Football Brisbane Lions vs. Richmond Tigers, 4:30 AM AFL Australian Rules Football Collingwood Magpies vs. Western Bulldogs

(Note, the remaining games of the women's afl season just got cancelled and they are moving straight to finals, so these AFLW games won't be the same teams listed)

Canada - TSN2: Thursday @ 4am (not sure which timezone): 4:00 AM Australian Rules Football: Richmond vs. Carlton || Sunday Mar 22nd @ 10:30 AM Australian Rules Football: Hawthorn vs. Brisbane

UK - BT Sport2: Sat 21 @ 13:30 AFL (Live) Essendon v Fremantle | 19:00 AFL (Live) GWS Giants v Geelong

I'm going to say June 15th, but I think that's a little optimistic. I think we'll see some sports come back with no fans in May though. Even June seems too early because places like Florida and Arizona have barely done anything so far.

Another option is that we see some places start having fans, while other places still say no. Like if things settle down here in Illinois they may open it back up to fans, but if it's raging somewhere else, then they play the game with no fans still. If China is any indication of what's to come, we're looking at three months of shutdowns.
