Why did I think Castle Freak was called Castle Rock? Intoxicants and horror pair well.

I endorse seeing movies with your pops, but I cannot imagine the awkward hell that is watching a Stuart Gordon film with one's father.

Might as well watch straight up Showtime porn.

If I saw that in the theater in 1922 I probably would have poo poo my pants

A lot of people tend to write off older films because they're in black & white or silent or presuming there's nothing of worth in them. From my own experience, it's been the goons here that have been the first people I've come across who don't dismiss them outright. I've said it before and can't stress it enough that if you ever have the chance to catch one of the old classics being shown on the big screen, DO IT! When I saw Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein on the big screen some years back, despite having seen both a shitload of times over my life, it was like seeing both for the first time. Cinematic tricks that just don't show on a TV or computer screen popped majorly on the big screen. Even seeing King Kong on the screen with all the bits usually cut for TV restored was a different experience. I can't wait for when Psycho's up in October to see how different that one'll be.

Any film pre-Hays Code is definitely worth giving a watch. A lot of content that's presumed to be modern subjects existed then, it's just Hays was ruthlessly puritanical when it came to film content.

I was talking to my dad on the phone yesterday, and I mentioned that I've mainly just been watching films during the quarantine. His instant reaction was to complain about me showing him Dagon, and the degloving scene in particular. It's been about 15 years and he still hasn't forgiven me lol

The most complete set out there is probably this one:https://www.amazon.com/Universal-Cl...85289919&sr=8-5

But there's also a similar set that just has the 8 "essentials"(Frankenstein, Bride, Dracula, Wolfman, The Mummy, Creature From the Black Lagoon, Invisible Man, Phantom of the Opera).

I don't know if you have access to YouTube TV, but I know that when TCM shows a classic horror movie (like Creature from the Black Lagoon, which was randomly on last weekend), they'll save the entire thing for playback, so you still get access to the intro and outro segments no matter what. If TCM doesn't keep anything like that for their own web-based streaming service (http://www.tcm.com/watchtcm/films), then that's going to be your next best bet.

Also, Burkion at least may be happy in the next few weeks; I don't know about you, TA, if you're looking for a more curated experience. :ninja:

Strange Days is great, nice little grungy sci-fi film noir. I wonder what it was about that era that it spawned so many films about snuff movies. You have Strange Days, 8mm, Mute Witness...

I love those and whenever I see a movie I own or have on streaming on TCM I record it just to get the intro even if I end up watching it some other way. Those DVD sets don't have anything quite that good but they do have special feature docs that kind of get you half the way if you're like me and really didn't know the history of Universal when you started to dive in.

I enjoy thinking about things like the psychic pool and psychic damage being shared among society and in a smaller scale, among artists. which is why we see such commonalities between artists and art in the same decades. All those weird shared influences that manifest just at the right time and then all of sudden we end up with a decades worth of end of days films or a decade of slasher flicks because society and the psychic trauma of living through news stories about serial killers build up over time and all of a sudden we have fictional stories about mass killers.

The emergence of the internet, domestic terrorism on the rise and the coming of a new millenium really influenced a whole swath of crazy movies like strange days.

I will go to my early grave defending Strange Days.

Y2K was a legit menace that folks too easily forget. Will the lights remain on? Will the airplane remain in the sky? When do the race-wars start?

Strange Days took the droll concerns of America's zeitgeist at the time and full blown made it cyberpunk. A science-fiction/noir hybrid that's easy on the eyes and oozes charisma chiefly through Ralph Fiennes, who later on would take me years to discover he wasn't even American!

POV porn exists in it's current state because of this movie.

It has become a horror film through it's prescience.

It's a great trailer, but too bad the film itself doesn't come close to living up to the premise, or that trailer. It could be a pretty awesome Black Mirror episode now, although they've hit the theme of brain recording a time or two.

I just watched Exorcist II: The Heretic. I did not hate it. There's a lot of kind of interesting ideas and like more Catholic Church/Jesuit stuff and demonic conspiracy stuff I like (and that reminds me of the way good tv series) and at its core I think an ok story or at least elements of what could have been a good story. But there's also a lot of weird "third eye" metaphysical stuff and a kind of over the top ending and some tonal issues and I don't think it really works very much at all. But like... I think I kinda get what they were going for and I can give them a mulligan for trying and failing.

I was getting real nervous about "one of the worst films ever" so maybe I went in with really low expectations.

Covid Casino movie night starts again Monday. I have to get a list together. My coworker keeps requesting the early 90s Night of The Living Dead remake and I can't find it anywhere. I have 24 hours of closed casino time to fill with SFW horror. I don't know how he likes slow burns but The VVitch is on Netflix now. I guess I'll have to dig into my Letterboxd list of horror and find programming. I'm really considering running it like a TV station with fake ads and everything. Really anything to stave off the tomb for opulence that is a closed casino.
