This sort of stuff is beyond me, what do you mean "makes sense" in this context? As far as I can tell, no part of any Federation ship makes much sense. It's clearly not about aerodynamics, it doesn't seem like they're using propulsion or anything, the layouts and interiors of the ships always seem bonkers...

Trek starships have fifty years of visual "design language" to them. It doesn't matter that warp physics doesn't actually exist; you can tell just by looking at a ship whether the design "works" or not as a plausible Starfleet vessel, based on what we've already seen. (Or a Romulan ship or Cardassian or anything else that that we've seen enough of to get a feel for their particular aesthetic.)

I think the ship design from the finale is... okay? We never really get a good look at them in the episode, and that Trekyards video shows why: the broad strokes are all right, but they look weird from underneath and they're missing some of the features that we expect to see (running lights, phaser strips, etc.). Somebody threw this design together quickly, without a lot of attention to detail.

I agree with everyone else that it would have been cooler if there had been any variety at all in the fleet. Sure, include the nifty new pocket battleship, but have some bigger ships too. Maybe a familiar design or two in there -- it's only been 20 years after all and ships last a long time. Maybe even a couple of clunky old Oberths or Mirandas way in the back, just to give us obsessive screenshot-scrutinizing fans something to grin at.

Well, of course I know him.

The ship designs are definitely rushed but they also look completely fine for the (maybe) 20+ seconds of total screentime they have. They only show their warts if you’re scrutinizing a screencap.

I disagree because I thought that scene was ugly as gently caress while watching it.

No clear views is a dead giveaway. Why not show off your new ship? This is star trek ffs, we've had like 15 straight minutes of nearly silent starship porn multiple times.

If I'm being honest, I couldn't even see any of the ships when they showed up. I kept looking at the screen but it was so messy and busy that I my brain couldn't focus on anything long enough to pick it out as being a space ship.

The first I think is a problem because the show couldn't decide how important the ex-B's were to the whole 'be nice to minorities' message they wanted the show to have.

The second I don't think is important. We don't need a history lesson on everything that's happened in the last 18 years. The world has changed and we know all we need to, which is that the Romulan Empire suffered a disaster, lots of Romulans died and it was a society devastating event, but the military and bits of the state are obviously still there. You can infer that the Romulans no longer had the resources to compete with the Federation across the border and their withdrawal resulted in a power vacuum that criminal elements moved into. This is all just parallels to events of the last 10 years.

Yeah, I don't mind not learning every bit of history- i don't even really need to know exactly what chain of events led to the borg cube becoming a research project. It makes sense if the Romulans are devastated that they would be trying to reclaim ex-borg Romulans.

What doesn't make sense is having this if the only role of the borg in the story is to have a cube crash into a planet and providing set dressing. But then you're left asking the question why Data is even in the show when he has no relevance to the story being told, either.

I've never seen a star trek with 200 copy and paste ships. It didn't look impressive, it looked cheap and lame, and they should be ashamed. I would have been way more impressed with 30 romulan ships vs 30 federation ships that had different designs, but these people obviously lack imagination

There was a time, oh so long ago, when Trek producers and such were proud of the ships their teams designed.

But now we're in a new era where tv watchers care about important stuff, 30 minutes after-shows where everyone tells you the stuff they forgot to put in to the episode because they weren't paying attention until the final cut was sent back to them.

This is the unused Eaves concept art it's based on. This ship is a lot better, even with trademark Eaves knife nacelles. The upper half of the saucer section makes sense, unlike the giant flat boat-shaped saucer that ended up in the show.

It has that classic late TNG Eaves design language of exposed sensor pallets, hexagonal escape pods, and a longitudinally stretched look.

lol there is no detailing whatsoever on the bottom of the ship. They completely gave up. Good luck if you're stationed on the lower half of either hull because there are no windows or escape pods

Also there are no weapons at all.

It looks kinda like the creatures from Galaxy's Child.

I think it's supposed to be the black grill across the almost-as-black front of the secondary hull.

I can kinda see what they were going as far as a phased array which looks more modern than a dish but it's indistinguishable from the hull.

There's like three different candidates for what might be a main deflector on the model.

Also there's no name or registry number. Presumably that would have made copy and paste more difficult?

No running lights, no thruster blocks, no phasers, no visible torpedo launchers, no pennants, no paint or indicator lights at all in fact.

And of course the issue with the bottom half of the ship.

Here's the model from Picard and a CG model from 1996 for comparison.

I hope the first thing that happens in season 2 is the wannabe Jedi guy gets taken out in phaser vs. edged weapon combat out in the open and replaced by the interesting Romulan lady who lives at Picard’s chateau. He makes zero difference to the plot currently and I’d like him gone before someone decides he should.

Then I hope we see a conversation where Riker and Picard have a good laugh that Picard used the purple magic box to create The Picard Kage No Bunshin Maneuver with Riker’s one federation ship because they couldn’t assemble a 200 ship fleet and get there in time. It’s a handwave with a lot of holes in it but that doesn’t seem to be an issue for this show. I refuse to accept any massive ship battle that doesn’t have any variety or at least the Akira class in it.

Yeah, I don't get it- I don't think the ships look particularly bad or anything, but copy pasting them 200 times doesn't really help them.

I think the scene would've been fine with just a few ships, or maybe just one on one. Just show that an actual Romulan warship can shrug off the orchids easily- it'd even make La Sirena's heroics make more sense.
