kind of funny what happens to RE games when you apply the criticisms of 6 to the earlier ones :v:

There is a noticeable change from 1-3 and 4-6

The first three just use the story as an excuse for a survival horror game while 4-6 actually try and have plots.

To mixed success

Nemesis is your wily game long antagonist so him being a climatic fight you need to beat to get outta town makes sense, much like Birkin and to an extent Mr. X.
a gaint monster

Chris's driving motivation and villain in 6 was Carla but she died early so heres a giant skeleton thing that will destroy the world if nobody gets it. It's kinda weak.

I have always been a RE6 defender and I will agree that it isn't for everyone but to this day I cannot see how someone could like 5 but hate 6. I straight out could not stand 5 for a reason I still can't quite pinpoint, but 6 hit everything just right for me. I loved the fact that each character had unique gameplay mechanics while also not punishing you for using the AI as a partner (I don't think I ever saw he AI die let alone take damage and they don't use up your resources either). Combat is fast paced and encourages you on mixing up your approach with both melee and ranged options (Headshots do the most single hit damage, but you can get way more total damage by doing an arm/shoulder shot melee combo), the dodge/parry system is very rewarding and the freedom of your character's movement is the highest it has been in the series ever.

Sure Chris got to fist fight a boulder, but Jake could do this.

I've been sitting here for 5 mins trying to think of a joke to make but I just realised the animators of Mass Effect already did it for me

RE5 has problems, but it's mostly trying to be one thing, not three. It's pacing felt better at any given time, and it kept its systems light and intuitive, even if they were still a bit clunky. RE6 has some depth, but does a bad job of teaching a lot of its mechanics because it's in too much of a big drat hurry to get to the climactic action and is afraid to slow down in a well paced way.

To be fair, i haven't played RE6 since it came out but I've replayed RE5 fairly recently and it holds up, especially if you're co-oping at home with someone. Does RE6 do split-screen co-op? If my son and I could go through it together like we did RE5, I might consider a revisit.

RE5 is fundamentally just 4 but a little more refined gameplay wise.

If you liked 4 I can’t see how you would dislike 5. Unless you just like the story of 4 which some do I guess

I'm in that camp honestly. 5's story didn't really grab me as much. You can feel how it got a little fractured from the decision to replace Jill with Sheva. Sheva herself was cool too though, they should have her pop up again at some point. I think part of is it that while 4 is a long game it keeps throwing weird new poo poo at you that's still related to what's going on, 5 feels padded in a few spots.

a forced AI co-op partner that you had to manage the inventory and ammunition of and who could game over you by getting hit by instant kill attacks.

RE5 is significantly different than RE4, imagine if Ashley just slowly stole bullets from you and could run into instant death QTEs and immediately die.

Dont judge me, I design your manhole
RE5 and 6 have the problem that they spend a lot of time focusing Chris, the guy that has been in like four games to to this point and still has no actual personality. 5 is the same as 4 on paper but the actual execution could not be more different. Of course 6 also focused on Leon, but they seemingly forgot his action movie thing wasn't meant to be played entirely straight.

I love RE5, probably even more than 4, but I think 6 is a mess even when really trying to like it.

The most memorable part of that game for me is the infested aircraft carrier. That part seemed to really knock it out of the part for me, although I remember it being extremely short.

I think a lot of it is that Chris is the "safest" protagonist in the franchise by 2000-2015 reckoning; he's a 30- to 40-something white, brown-haired, buff guy with beard stubble and anger issues. In other words, he's a solid avatar for what used to be perceived as the primary international video game demographic.

It's unusual in that while Chris does have a personality, he tends to take center stage in stories where that personality's suppressed. He's burned out at the start of RE5 and just going through the motions, and for most of RE6, he's a big ball of mood swings and untreated head trauma.

In Revelations, Code Veronica, and the flashback chapters in RE6, you kinda get a glimpse of him under ordinary circumstances, where he's a solid, dependable guy with a bad temper (i.e. getting into a fistfight with Wesker at all) and a mildly dorky sense of humor, which again means he's basically just an audience surrogate.

Every main character in RE is extremely boring outside of The Memes and not even RE2's Remake could remedy this despite its best attempts at improving the franchise's writing. I doubt 3 will be any different in this regard.

Yeah, I think this is ultimately the best thing to come out of RE6 (and other disasters from the time like DmC). Capcom actually realizing that their approach from the late 2000s to the mid 2010s was A Very Bad Idea is something I didn't fully expect for them to come to. Capcom going further and applying those lessons across most of the company to make successful games is even more impressive. The last few years have definitely felt like Capcom did some serious introspective dives into how they approached the market and made efforts to right the ship, and I fully appreciate any company making that very hard choice.

Also, I’d forgotten how weak and helpless they made Ashley, especially compared to RE2make Claire. I just finished the chapter when you and Luis have to defend the village house. After the fight, I jumped out of the second floor window and ran off to grab ammo, and Ashley was screaming for help because I “left her” upstairs.

Guess she doesn’t have stairs in her house.

Me llamo Sarah Brandolino, the eighth Castilian of this magnificent marriage.
I think it's more appropriate to say that if you weren't into RE4, and definitely not into RE5, then you would never be into RE6. Additionally, if you weren't playing the games (including Revelations) you wouldn't really come into the games expecting the kind of poo poo it throws at you, so it makes the experience a lot worse for the impatient.

I absolutely love RE6, but most of the 20 chapters have some problems that also get in the way of the experience and I can see how. It bears mentioning the game was rushed to release, so it lacks the polish it needed. Jake & Sherry's campaign is packed right to the rim with instant death and QTE-related nonsense. Their Chapter 2 starts so strong but then becomes a series of enthusiastically raised middle fingers. Their Chapter 4 starts off with the second worst driving sequence in the game (second to the Snowmobile earlier in Chapter 2). Their Chapter 5 is entirely terrible except for the Ustanak at the end. Up until then it's a cross-over with Chris on moving platforms featuring the only killable enemies in that romp, and before that is a gigantic vertical puzzle chamber with unkillable regenerators. Definitely the worst part of the game by far, and it's completely out of touch with all the other content. It just exists to make sure all of the cast end up fighting against lovely enemies.

Jake & Sherry's campaign is also just way too short. Every time it starts getting super good it ends. Hence why their Chapter 3 is the best in the game. I get the theme of escape and being on the run for survival but it didn't come together.

Leon Chapter 1 is terrible to start with. Both as a player for the first time and as an introduction to the game at all. You can tell they had a lot of ideas that they wanted to try early on in development that did not get smoothed out. ALL of that university walking around with the idiot you have to wait on to progress is time wasting. Up until you manage to get out into the University yard, it's also forcing you to walk, disabling controls left and right; there are so many weird constraints that do not paint a good picture of the game. Once you get past that, it's one of the most fun chapters, and Chapter 2 (the cathedral part aside) is pretty drat good. Leon Chapter 3 is also decent. Then you get to the rushed aspects of Chapter 4 and 5 - both are essentially boss rushes, and the market of Chapter 4 and the Carla chase is pure tedium.

Chris' campaign is straight action with the least amount of monotony, but it's also pretty hard. One of the most annoying design decisions in the game is how bizarrely limited certain ammo types are. You can only carry 60 assault rifle rounds in one slot but 150 HG bullets in another? Methinks they forgot an extra 0. Compared to L&H and J&S, it feels the least rushed of them, delivering what the game's all about in a consistent manner. Of course it's not immune to some cheapness (Chapter 5, the run from the Haos) but eh. Chris 4, blasting through the big aircraft carrier is well set-up, kinda ties with Jake 3 for me.

Ada's campaign feels to me fairly solid. Must have been one of the first things they had gotten through painlessly before rush hour set in.
