It’s amazing, it’s a 4K set AND a blu-Ray set, as opposed to one big one. So, each separate collection had a digital copy.

I’m only kinda sorta interested in OT 4K and maybe Rogue One. Depends on how substantial of an improvement either one is, and how much more they screwed with the OT.

4K77 has superceded Despecialised these days, although Harmy still intends on a new version even he admits proper scans of original prints kinda have made his work a bit redundant.

I'm intrigued to see the UHD Star Wars OT discs just out of curiosity, but I'm guessing they're just using the same masters prepared for D+ and they'll be riddled with bad decisions and just out and out dreadful color work.

They say that 97% of 4K77 is sourced from a single Technicolor print that's in private hands. ROTJ is also done now, and they're working on ESB.

Yeah, you can read all about it on https://www.thestarwarstrilogy.com/project-4k77/

It's amazing how a group of individuals have done something that the studios just outright refuse to do, but hey. The one thing that takes a bit of getting used to in ANH at least is boy it's exposed a lot more than the versions you're used to. It feels like every shot is just a milimeter off clipping out. Given how much white is in the film at times, it's so noticeable. But it's correct, so...

They should be loving embarrassed that a bunch of nerds have done better releases of the films than their multibillion dollar studio has. But of course the generation who grew up with the version with all the stupid poo poo is getting older and they've probably never seen the original versions, so I feel like this is increasingly becoming a thing very few people care about anymore.

It is by far the worst of the alterations. It also doesn't fit the scene or the aesthetic at all. The original song is being played by characters that are very obviously exhausted and everything looks smokey and kind of sleazy. The whole thing implies a bunch of sad sacks who have no other choice but to sing their tired songs while a bunch of hangers on and dirt bags lay around smoking and probably doing space drugs. Then you have Jedi Rocks where some cartoon dipshit is screaming into the camera and they've tried to make the singer sexy while they clutter up the scene with a bunch of dipshits. I hate it so much.

One of the most baffling things about Disney’s Star Wars home video releases is how they decided that the original movie should be associated with the color magenta:

The menu for the new box set version apparently uses this scheme. There’s nothing close to this in the color pallatte of the entire movie and it bothers me a lot.

The true irony of the special edition versions is that the 1997 additions/changes are now OLDER than than the originals when they were put in. They'll go back to trims to drop in something stupid like MACLUNKY, but can't be bothered to re-render 23 year old CGI that looked like poo poo even in 2004.

There's literally no point to the special editions existing to "improve" special effects when they look even more aged now.

One is in Lucasfilm's archive, one at LoC, and probably one at the British Film Institute (by 1977, the only Tech labs still around were in London and Rome). Might be one or two in collectors' hands, but who knows.

Nah, that’s one of the changes I actually prefer. The newer orchestral piece by Williams that plays over those scenes is so drat good and it’s a great mix of celebratory and bittersweet that really sells the weight of the moment in a way that Yub Nub never could. I mean don’t get me wrong, Yub Nub is goofy as poo poo and I love it, but you only improve the scene with the new music.

I grew up with the original version and the Special Edition more or less concurrently (saw the films for the first time in ~‘95, saw them in theaters the first time in ‘97 with the special editions), so I love both and, as a result, YMMV of course.

:frogout:

The original ending works better because we get to see the characters we followed the whole movie celebrate their huge against all odds victory. It seems awkward that we'd have a few seconds of that and then a bunch of people a galaxy away dancing. The old ending is more intimate. Plus there are Ewoks using the heads of space Nazis as drums.

I saw the prequel and sequel trilogies in theaters. I just think the prequels are so bleh. Phantom Menace was my first DVD, but otherwise I don’t really feel the need to revisit them. Part of why I like the sequels is that as lovely as they are story-wise, there’s some decent action sequences, good looking shots, much better acting, etc.

I was nine when TPM came out so a huge part of it for me really is just nostalgia. I’d never try to convince anyone the prequels are high art or anything, but when I watch them they remind me of how excited I was at the time and how my grandfather and I would go hunt down all the toys and poo poo, things like that. It’s comfort food.

Four and 2 Fast? Or 8?

I like The Fast and Furious movies. I got introduced to them a little over a year ago, and they’re just good clean fun. I will say there’s a contrast in the relative cohesiveness in those movies vs Star Wars (gently caress calling it The Skywalker Saga.), and they don’t take themselves too seriously. Also their themes of family and living life a quarter mile at a time are v relatable.

It is funny though. I have yet to see a F&F movie in theaters (9 was gonna be my first!), but my prequel viewings were pretty memorable. Phantom Menace w my brothers. Attack of the Clones w my best friend who passed a few years ago. He had never been to a theater before the first movie we saw together. Revenge of the Sith w my dad who I’m pretty sure I’ve never seen a contemporary movie one-on-one with him since then.

I’ve also adopted some of his cinema cynicism, but I think it’s hard not to be these days.

I think it’s one thing I like about physical media. Looking at the cases really puts me into the memory of when I first saw the movie or show.

I’m not trying to criticize anyone’s choices or anything. My initial point was just about the whiplash in tone, etc between the 3 Star Wars trilogies. But we’re all here cause we like movies to a level that makes us weirdos.

My coworker cannot understand why I’ll wait for a physical copy of a game or movie to go on sale rather than getting the digital copy. The concept of dependability doesn’t occur to him!

Private Property
Belladonna of Sadness
Funeral Parade of Roses
Guiseppe Makes a Movie
(plus posters for some to-be-released films like Satantango and Son of the White Mare)

Funeral Parade of Roses is an absolute essential (and has a stunning 4K restoration), but I found The Last Movie to be fascinating with Dennis Hopper trying for a way more avant-garde approach compared to Easy Rider.

Columbia Classics: Volume I UHD Gift set - June 16
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
Lawrence of Arabia
Dr. Strangelove: or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
Gandhi
A League of Their Own
Jerry Maguire

It notes 17 discs, which probably means the extra discs are for Lawrence of Arabia - the Japanese "Mastered in 4K" release used two BD-50s instead of one, so I'd expect the UHDs to split the movie across a BD-100 and BD-66. Then there's two supplement discs.
