jesus christ these games are brutal. I just finished my first extra stage and it drove me crazy. So many weird things like the second part of Mokou's phoenix survival spell being impossible clockwise but easy counterclockwise. How did anyone finish this stuff before youtube?

Extra stages are also where ZUN puts the bullshit puzzle cards which weren’t fair enough for the main game. Even so I still don’t know how to dodge half the stage 5/6 cards in any of the games I’ve cleared, to be honest, but that’s why the gods invented bombs.

So there's a new high polish Chinese Touhou fan-shmup out on Steam, Elegant Impermanence of Sakura: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1252320/Touhou_Kikamu__Elegant_Impermance_of_Sakura/ People seem to really like it, but at a high level I'm not a big fan of the heavily routed stage design. I'll probably check it out at some later point, not totally sure about this one though. The gimmick with the stages is that you have small enemies that fly across the screen that you're not supposed to kill, and big enemies with bubbles where killing them also kills all small enemies and erases all bullets in the bubbles, giving bonus points/resources. The stages are all routed so you can pop the bubbles at specific times to catch every small enemy.

Watching a play through I think it's just an expansion of the old TH8 familiar system https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtjxWW32Mhg So they'll go in the background depending on what type you are That run actively takes advantage of it (side note: this is a really gorgeous game and I loe all the spell card patterns) but there's still plenty of normal waves of enemies and you'd probably get at least an interesting experience even if you weren't going all in on the gimmick

you can sight-read the chaining most of the time so don't be too put off by the thought of having to route things out. none of the dialog or endings are translated yet, but it's a good time if that doesn't matter to you. extra stage boss is wild. really like marisa's sprite
