The best example I can think of is Pulse. But even something like The Crazies, where it takes like a solid hour before people stop being willing to listen to proper authorities and stand in lines, would count.

I don't mean like Dawn of the Dead, where stuff is fine but then zombies show up and it's like a switch is flipped and society is gone. I'm specifically after a gradual process where at least a majority of the movie does not count as post-apocalyptic.

Children of Men, my man.

While not overtly a horror film, the realism of social failure, of human despair, is so well done you will come through the film a changed man.

Children of Men and Mad Max are kinda interesting because they're mid-apocalyptic. Society is collapsing, but just slowly enough that people can accept it as the status quo. I like both those movies a lot

I remember just hearing about Audition but not really knowing much about it, so I bought it and put it on during a Halloween party.

That was...an interesting party.

i think if this were to be redone, you would shoot three different layers, one being the back plate of the flames to get a clean rotation, a plate of the skull melting and then a plate of the foreground flames. Have the last 10 frames of each flame layer slower going down in opacity until the loop restarts and an increasing opacity. flames are tough tho unless you're rendering your own effects version.

Shin Godzilla is a great watch if you don't want pure apocalypse porn, but instead want a dry political satire with a good monster movie attached.

If you don't mind anime, Gyo might interest you. It was advertised as SHARKS WITH LEGS ATTACK but that is only a small part from relatively early in the movie. The movie gets really weird and creepy with how this monster fish attack pans out, and that it happens so gradually is exactly why.

You can rank the Godzilla films however you like it doesn't matter.

Alan, if you want a Godzilla rec, 1974 Godzilla VS MechaGodzilla is one of my personal favorites. It's not a great looking movie in a lot of respects, but it's drat near one of the most fun across the franchise. The soundtrack is straight up bonkers and I love it.
