The information is easily attainable and you pretending it isn't is a load of crap. Stop being dumb, understand the difference between facts that happen to make someone look bad and facts cherry picked and misrepresented to make someone look bad.

edit: Also you can't exactly unite when both sides are opposites. Like when one side is saying hey we should social distance and the others like but but but the economy! You can kind of see how those might not really work well together.

Newsflash: Dr. Fauci, the social distancing guy, is Trump's primary advisor for this crisis. So unless you're saying that the Democrats are against Social Distancing, and the Republicans are for it, they're not exactly on opposite sides of this issue. In fact, the first pundits to take the virus seriously by recommending travel bans and social distancing while impeachment was still dominating the news were Trump's earliest supporters (ie Scott Adams, Steve Bannon, Jack Posobiec, Tarl Warwick, Mike Cernovich, Tucker Carlson, etc). Some of them were warning as early as December, when the rest of the press (both let and right) were downplaying it and focusing on impeachment. Both sides were downplaying the severity until March. But you know what? Even though they were wrong, I actually don't blame people for downplaying the severity, because hindsight is 2020 and an over-reaction that results in a crippling depression or a totalitarian state (like what happened in Hungary) could result in way more lives lost in the longterm than lives lost from the virus in the short term. The World Health Organization may have lied to us about the masks to prevent hoarding (not that it helped much), so even they may have had good intentions by downplaying the need. It's important to point out where we made mistakes so we can learn from them. But this constant blaming and hatred of one an other is exactly what's making this crisis way worse than it needs to be.

Didn't they already say they found the source was from pangolins in Malaysia that were illegally imported into China? They've found the virus in their lungs in the middle of loving nowhere.

I didn't hear that, and I hadn't seen the paper someone just posted as well.

This is the simpler explanation from that paper: basically, it says the virus is so good at entering human cells that it couldn't possibly be lab created:

quote:

Here's why: SARS-CoV-2 is very closely related to the virus that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), which fanned across the globe nearly 20 years ago. Scientists have studied how SARS-CoV differs from SARS-CoV-2 — with several key letter changes in the genetic code. Yet in computer simulations, the mutations in SARS-CoV-2 don't seem to work very well at helping the virus bind to human cells. If scientists had deliberately engineered this virus, they wouldn't have chosen mutations that computer models suggest won't work. But it turns out, nature is smarter than scientists, and the novel coronavirus found a way to mutate that was better — and completely different— from anything scientists could have created, the study found.

Another nail in the "escaped from evil lab" theory? The overall molecular structure of this virus is distinct from the known coronaviruses and instead most closely resembles viruses found in bats and pangolins that had been little studied and never known to cause humans any harm.

"If someone were seeking to engineer a new coronavirus as a pathogen, they would have constructed it from the backbone of a virus known to cause illness," according to a statement from Scripps.

Where did the virus come from? The research group came up with two possible scenarios for the origin of SARS-CoV-2 in humans. One scenario follows the origin stories for a few other recent coronaviruses that have wreaked havoc in human populations. In that scenario, we contracted the virus directly from an animal — civets in the case of SARS and camels in the case of Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS). In the case of SARS-CoV-2, the researchers suggest that animal was a bat, which transmitted the virus to another intermediate animal (possibly a pangolin, some scientists have said) that brought the virus to humans.

In that possible scenario, the genetic features that make the new coronavirus so effective at infecting human cells (its pathogenic powers) would have been in place before hopping to humans.

In the other scenario, those pathogenic features would have evolved only after the virus jumped from its animal host to humans. Some coronaviruses that originated in pangolins have a "hook structure" (that receptor binding domain) similar to that of SARS-CoV-2. In that way, a pangolin either directly or indirectly passed its virus onto a human host. Then, once inside a human host, the virus could have evolved to have its other stealth feature — the cleavage site that lets it easily break into human cells. Once it developed that capacity, the researchers said, the coronavirus would be even more capable of spreading between people.

All of this technical detail could help scientists forecast the future of this pandemic. If the virus did enter human cells in a pathogenic form, that raises the probability of future outbreaks. The virus could still be circulating in the animal population and might again jump to humans, ready to cause an outbreak. But the chances of such future outbreaks are lower if the virus must first enter the human population and then evolve the pathogenic properties, the researchers said.

So those "pathogenic towers" basically indicate it comes via pangolin and couldn't (?) have even come directly from bats apparently

A BSL-4 laboratory and a wet market are as far apart in the standard of caution as it is possible for any two things to be.

What’s more is that collection of viruses is less risky than a random virus generator, i.e. an infected bat, pangolin, or civet.

With a collection of viruses, there is the potential that one of the thousands of viruses you have collected is capable of causing disease in humans.

A live animal is much worse. Viruses are actively reproducing and mutating inside them and trying their hand against humans.

It’s like letting a monkey peck at a keypad to guess your PIN, versus the collection of viruses being like two guys put in their own PINs and if one of them happens to be the same as yours, he’s in.

Philthy posted:

Not quite.

A virus found in a bat remains the closest genetic match to SARS-CoV-2.

These newly discovered pangolin viruses are a better match than any virus previously found in pangolins, and they suggest that bat viruses have been infecting pangolins in places other than Wuhan’s market.
