I love drawing. I'm just not the person who likes doodling on something for hours and hours when all I have to show for it is one drawing.

I want to improve very much, I didn't say otherwise. Improvement is very much a goal.

I started drawing when I was 8. I'm 32 now. I only recently (two years ago) decided to take art seriously. I've never been happier.

Here's an example of the efficiency I'm referring to. I spent easily 12 hours turning this image

into this image

I have other similar drawings. I could repeat that process and slave away on each and every frame, and it would look fantastic. But the duplication of effort bothered me. I would be drawing a character over and over, so instead of that, I decided to build the model myself, and texture it... so that producing an image with that character in the future was a matter of placing the scene and grabbing a render, then working over it in Corel Painter.

And after a couple of pages of people wtfing, Avshalom does her best to bring the discussion back on the rails:

Avshalom posted:

 Okay, let's get this thread back on-topic. Now we're talking about likeable vs. interesting characters, I just thought I'd run a few character designs for my comic relaunch past the thread. My designs in the past have been pretty flat and sameish, they didn't express the characters' background, culture or personality very well. I've been dabbling in a style that mixes photomanipulation with digital painting, so it's got that nice foundation of realism but with a veneer of artistry over the top. It's good because I've always had a tendency to get caught up in re-drawing and worrying about little details. This way I can get a comic out as soon as I've collected the photos. Anyway, here are the characters (all the photos are my own):

Lumina Brennan: The "leader" of the group. Headstrong, a little bossy, secretly insecure and worried about her appearance, but she hides that under a veneer of self-confidence as you can see from her straightforward no-nonsense flaunting of her body. Each of the characters has an elemental power and Lumina's is Light, so I tried to incorporate a rainbow element into her design to evoke the light spectrum without relying on cliches like blonde hair or literal glowing.

Plum Blossom Yang: The genius of the group. Her elemental power is Brain. She is a ninja who is very shy and submissive, but uses her meek appearance to get close enough to her victims to strike them with her neuro-hacking, with which she can take control of their bodies. However, she prefers to control her own body - she's an athlete as well as an intellectual and considers her perfect figure to be a symbol of her power and ability, so she displays it proudly whenever possible.

Mengelina Finn: The sassy girl. Her elemental power is Water. I made her a redhead as a bit of irony. She actually gets really upset when people point out how funny it is that a redhead is in control of water! Although Lumina tends to take control, Mengelina is the true leader who influences the others through snark and sarcastic remarks. Sometimes she can go a bit too far and cause offence, but she has a good heart and tends to be right about most things. She grew up on a secluded island living a subsistence hunter-gatherer lifestyle, so she never learnt to be ashamed of her body and she usually goes naked because it helps her swim faster.

Choo Choo: The alien. Choo Choo's elemental power is Fire. She's actually originally a tool of the invading aliens (the villains of the comic) and is a modified deathbot who was hacked by Plum Blossom and developed sentience and a personality. She's quiet but extremely powerful. She doesn't really understand humans yet, but the other girls are trying to teach her to fit in with human society and constantly reassure her that she's beautiful and desirable to boost her self-confidence, which leads to her slowly becoming more empowered and willing to display her body over the course of the comic.

Let me know what you think! I'm hoping to get the first few comics out as soon as I'm totally happy with the art style.

That's not what she got perma'd for, and again you're conveniently leaving out the underage aspect of the fart fancition she would not stop posting.

Also we're not 'making her out to be' a drat thing, she *literally did* post in a stickied mental health thread, and it was apparently so egregious that a mod had to edit her post.

I didn't see it and I'm inclined to think that people are exaggerating, because Goons do that a lot.

If kids were sexualized, then sure, that's a zero tolerance perma, if it was fart jokes, then who gives a poo poo. Based on the bans of her that I've seen previously, I'm going with this one being dumb, too, because the handful of previous bans @ her that I've seen all have been idiotic.

Uh, yeah. It's weird we're retreading the whole "some people frequent threads/topics that have legitimate value to them, so don't poo poo them up" thing like Dec/Jan didn't happen.

Avs is certainly creative. I really miss Otterposts. But that wallop of probes+permas is a nice reminder that ability to be funny doesn't always supercede the forum rules.

Ooh, here's a fun exercise: take your "yeah she posted in a mental health thread, whatever" post and change out the underlined part to different terms (like, say, PoC, Queer, etc), and see how long it takes to find a combination that's gross!

Its because of all the other things added on after the perma ban, since those overwrote the previous punishment. So when NYC banned the account it overwrote the permaban because the forums code is literally 2000 tech and dumb as gently caress.

It's time for Corvidae, my favourite bird family!

Of the corvids, crows are probably my favourite. They're smart, they're everywhere, there's a family of them who like to hang out in the tree outside my house and scream at passing raptors. But crows also get all the press (along with ravens, aka "it's like a crow but 30% bigger and gloomier"), so instead I'm going to talk about one of the prettiest corvids: the blue jay! They're ubiquitous where I live and I usually see a few in my backyard every day.

In the summer they're pretty sleek

In the winter they get reaaaaaaal poofy, unless they migrate south -- fun fact, some blue jays migrate south and some don't! It doesn't seem to be regional, though, in any given area some will migrate and some will just stay there year-round.

They're omnivores, but they especially love peanuts. If you set up a peanut feeder and keep refilling it they will figure out not just where you live, but where in the building you tend to be at any given time of day, and, when it runs out, fly to that window to scream at you.

They also do whatever this is. Probably an argument over a peanut, or possibly an air traffic control failure.

My girlfriend got us Wingspan for christmas and we've been playing it a bunch, and my best game was the one where I got like three corvids and just went all-in on the corvid strategy. Hoarding corvids is a brutally effective strategy.

A lot of things about that game impress me, but probably the thing that impresses me the most is how good a job they've done making the mechanics of the various birds thematically related to their real-world behaviours.

I raised a blue jay from a baby once.
They are smart as gently caress. His cage was in my room and he would wake up before me, somehow open up his cage and then grab an empty food packet. He would then fly over to my bed and peck my toes with is beak and when i would stir he would shake the food packet at me and squawk to let me know it was food time.
I let him have free reign of my room, and he would sit on my wrist as I typed and would peck keys too.
He was climatized to the wild and released according to wildlife management.

Once I rehabbed a raven with a broken wing. I was in the fith grade and had just started reading Poe, So of course its name was Lenore. It was released back into the wild when the wing was healed.
