i legitimately saw a mushroom agitprop film a little while back. it was this hour-or-so long movie about how mushrooms are literally magic and how this one dude (whose portfolio of patented fungi strains would certainly not make him a lot of money if consumption went up and psyclosybin was legalized) was so cool and had his life literally changed by mushrooms. The group showing the film had employees there handing out magazines stuffed with ads for dudes mushrooms and mushroom accessories

I was looking at this SBA loan forgiveness plan that's a part of the relief / recovery / bailout bill. I actually think right now is an incredible time to launch a startup, and I want to hire a few out of work software engineers to work with me.

My plan was to incorporate, take out a loan, and pay payroll with the entirety of it. Unfortunately it looks like the bill requires you to have been in business before February 15th with verifiable employees on payroll.

I'm really miffed, because putting unemployed employees on payroll at a new company isn't any worse than keeping existing employees on payroll at a business that doesn't have customers. In fact, if a new company is more productive and is working on solving problems that arise because of this virus, it seems more productive to solve the new problems than to keep the unviable businesses running.

I'll have to figure something else out...

That's one way of looking at it. Another way of looking at it is that people should strive to be self-reliant. Not: "how can we meet people's needs?" but "how do we help people meet their own needs?". Like the old proverb about giving a man a fish vs. teaching a man to fish.
Everyone always shuts down that second question with "they can't help themselves until their basic needs are met" which is incredibly hand wavy and disingenuous, in my opinion. Half of being poor is in the mind. If poor people are to become middle class people, there needs to be a change in the mind. This change doesn't automatically happen "because money". Changing the mind needs to come from teachers and mentors and the poor person has to want to change and start thinking and acting differently.

If you get everyone reliant on a monolithic omnipotent government, then when said monolithic government fails all of helpless leeches will die (and that could be millions).

I think it's better if we strive for a minimalistic government where members of society strive to be self-reliant and in terms of "safety nets" the government's goal is to promote and encourage self-reliance.

quote:

kryogen1c 8 minutes ago [-]

>We'd be so much better off as a society if we could at least keep our people fed.
this is not a statement you can make without qualifying. it is either a useless tautology (society would be better if society were better), or an actual argument about policy and procedures (if wealthier people paid more taxes, we could feed poorer people and society would be better).

of course, no one says the second thing when that's what they mean because it is not self-evidently true. the core issue is complex and then the second- and third- order consequences are even more complex. this is to say nothing about which morals you presuppose about what a "better" society would be.

> I wish could out last this virus.

I have been wishing the opposite. my greatest fear is that the virus and soon-to-be depression will be used to push through some extreme political policy that will reshape America in a near-uncontrolled way.

I understand that you're ready to shell out other peoples' resources/money.
The question is: Are you ready to shell out your own to achieve your vision? Otherwise, you're probably not very committed to it, yet expect others to be.

Also, how well did this vision work for Mao, Stalin, and Chavez?

Providing people the opportunity to eat, without working, and to multiply in free government housing?

That sounds like a recipe for a dire population explosion which is unable to support itself, and lives off of an artificial, subsidized welfare system ripe for collapse as soon as people aren't forced to pay into it (those people who work).

quote:

hpoe 12 minutes ago [-]

I want to help other people I donate a decent chunk of my paycheck to humanitarian and other charitable efforts. I hate seeing people hungry, I grew up in a difficult situation and I hate seeing children go hungry.
My problem isn't that I am against people getting free food and shelter I am opposed to being forced into charity at the point of gun by the state, and my liberties being eroded by moral busiebodies that fail to understand the very things that led us have a society that even has the capability of eliminating hunger are the very things they are trying to destroy.

Every advancement, every push for "just a little bit more welfare", or "think of the children" has behind it the unspoken assumption that the government can do a better job with my means to help people than I could. This same government with a 13% approval rating and that is universally despised in most everything they try and do.

Every inch of additional power that the government gets is an advancement that is set in stone and can only be rewound with great effort.

So please don't paint me as an amoral monster, I do care, but I also recognize that sometimes emotionally driven responses that are executed without much thought and planning, like California banning plastic bags, can cause a lot more harm than good, especially in the long run.

I just feel like speaking my mind. It's a WIP.
The idea of the patriarchy really took hold. It's convenient to believe that everything is the fault of monstrous men. Meanwhile many men never really wanted to be an oppressive alpha anyways, many just want to love and be loved; perhaps focus on their projects. It seemed like a win-win, softer men can just be themselves, no more oppression, who needs the dumb alphas anyways?
But there's one big issue here: neither male nor female libido has changed. Women still get off harder when they feel it's their idea, that the man was the trophy. But to be honest with a woman is to be honest about the male libido, that it's not particularly difficult to hack into.
So in order to really get a girls rocks off, you have to be able to hack her libido. Whatever her game is, you've got to know how to play it. Which means you'll have power over her, she's thinking about you, the more she think about you the more power you have, obsession, etc. And if you hurt her, it's oppression. She never wanted this! Pay no mind to the men she's hurt herself, for they set themselves up for it. But you worked to do this to her.
I honestly think there's only one way to create equality and that's drugs that change our libidos to be more similar: A. For women: perhaps a drug that makes them simultaneously aroused and hyper-critical? B. For men: I don't know what it's like to be a woman. Women should design this drug.
Feel free to replace the words "men" and "women" with top/bottom, dom/sub, masculine/feminine, or whatever non gender biased terms suit you, if that's what you like.
