If they're under 18 then it's still very sad. I was a total loser in school and I still had better memories than "saw the climax of a super hero movie".

By the way, pretty much all of those losses are incurred because of a law passed by congress in 2006 that requires the USPS to fund 75 years of healthcare pensions in advance. It's nowhere close to typical, it's literally just to make the USPS lose money every year and look bad.

Isn't this just an admission of Scorsese's complaint that superhero movies are theme parks rather than cinema? Like, the whole point of a popcorn blockbuster is for those woop-moments, he's just dressing it up in fancy/classics 101 allusions.

He’s technically right. Shakespeare’s works were mass market plays with crude humor that often had a contemporary political bent to please wealthy patrons and the nobility. The only real difference from modern blockbusters in intent is the language used.

When I was on the birth control shot it really hosed up my brain and I thought a personality was a thing you had, similar to a soul, that made you a person. I thought I didn't have one, and I was just an empty husk of a person. When I stopped taking that fuckin shot those beliefs went away and it just went back to regular clinical depression.

Really a lot of writing we hold up as the pinnacle of western writing was the dime store trash of its day.

Which makes sense as dime store trash is what civilization is all about.

Not always, but very often. That kind of entertainment that those people deem low brow is fine. The weirdness starts when people start trying to apply artistic intent where it doesn't belong. Most pop music has a bunch of writers in the credits desperately trying to engineer the catchiest tune they can with minimal consideration for its content. Same with stuff like MCU. That doesn't mean you can't enjoy it. I don't want a fancy five course dinner every single night. Grilled cheese and tomato soup from a can is fine.

This. Humans really haven't changed a lot in the past couple thousand of years. I read a lot of classic literature, partly because I'm an English major, but I'd never imply it's somehow better and more literary than a lot of the modern stuff on my shelves.

Beowulf, man. Beowulf is the blockbuster action hero of his era. There's a bit in Beowulf that mentions he's so strong that he breaks swords. Every English literature overview class starts with Beowulf and his fatal arm wrestling match with Grendel, despite the fact that old English is a Germanic dialect and is not intelligible with modern English.

Some stories are serious and some are fun trash, and we like both. Both are valuable. Both are human.
