https://twitter.com/NateSilver538/status/1249373172690046977 I know people don't take the model underlying this very seriously because they they think it's underestimating, but I'm guessing that would be true across the board, so you could still use it for comparison's sake. What the gently caress is happening in Sweden and the Netherlands?

Craig K posted:good lord almighty is this what racists are blaming it on? this literally looks nicer than my local farmer's market Of course not. They base it on individual shock videos of some asian who may or may not be chinese grabbing a live frog out of a bucket on the street and biting the head off, slurping up the guts. A good ol' boy I work with has all of them. Any video of an asian eating something gross at a street market is being passed around as if that's how everyone over there eats. Same with any racism, one example of behavior being used as a broad brush to paint everyone.

So for some reason it thinks there will hardly be any more deaths in Italy, while The Netherlands will increase almost tenfold. Don't think there really is any sane way to justify that.

Smart people are going to figure out treatment for this before we have a vaccine. This has all the hallmarks of a disease we haven't figured out yet. The reports from ERs of a dastardly, unpredictable disease - unexpected progression of disease. Weird symptologies. Not fully understanding how contagion even works. Someone is going to figure it out and be hailed a hero, while embarrassing the gently caress out of everyone else. My money is on a lady from New Jersey. But until then it's hellworld.

The British didn't originally want to create them. As part of the 'get out of india ASAP plan' the idea was for them to be under a big federal indian state, but the guy at head of the indian muslims, Ali Jinnah [a british educated lawyer] demanded both Pakistans be a single separate state. The brits agreed mostly to avoid them making a fuss, but the orginal idea was for the indian/pakistani governments to be closer collaborators, a bit like the EU. This however went to poo poo when the rushed british partition and xenophobia led to mass ethnic cleansing between muslims/hindus, which obviously sent relations down the gutter [and took the people at the head of the pakistan/indian indepedance movements - mostly british educated liberals]. To top it all off, Jinnah dies a year later so doesn't even get to try to keep together this state he creates.

According to German studies, plasma injection with blood from immunized people actually seems to be a reasonable way to fight it. That would be quite good, because the potential supply of that stuff is growing daily and injecting blood plasma is a comparatively safe treatment.

While showing an average market is productive in that it shows that not all markets are bad really the worse markets are the ones that are a problem and that need to be improved and or shut down. It's easy to hand wave any complaints as racism because it's often times at the very least partly that. Often times more than just partly. Can improvements be made? Absolutely. Are they necessary? Probably not for that market but I'd certainly see it as a good thing. As far as that being average? That doesn't seem great to me but that may be because my perception if tainted by grout. Grout never seems clean. As far as America goes we aren't great either. Seems to me leafy greens are always being recalled for something. Also everyone loving wash your hands. edit: I'm just assuming about the worse markets the only video I saw that wasn't that one wasn't actually China so yeah. The American South went to war in order to preserve their ability to continue chattel slavery. They believed that they’d get support from industrializing Britain because King Cotton would compel help from Europe. They were under no illusions about whether or not slaves in the cotton fields were essential workers. The key word that American hyper inequality uses to decide if you are worth paying is not “essential” it’s “replaceable”. And then some bootstrap mythologizing about how anyone who wants to be rich in this country can be, so long as they try hard enough. America needs a new story about how it functions, one that leads to less inequality but that doesn’t sound like socialism or communism because those ideas are so thoroughly tied into decades of conflict that they are irredeemable in the eyes of most voters. Maybe this disease is the beginning of that lesson. Maybe climate change is. I wish us luck.

Sorry. Earlier today I was reading an article about some university hospital which was already doing it to 19 patients and the doctors were quite impressed with the early results. But I can't find that anymore. And it's not a rigorous study with a double blind test yet. But those have started. I guess, we will see some results in two weeks. If the group with the real plasma gets healthy way faster, that's a significant bit of data. But the important part is that an attempt of passive imunization will have a way smaller risk of long term side effects, compared to a new form of active immunization, or hydrochloride.

This is the essence of capitalism; my original post is in reference to the cultural assumptions instilled in the American middle class, such that it still exists, by that very system. Just maybe there will now be a realignment that allows people to actually question their assumptions about how ‘awesome’ the only freedom actually defended by anyone in this country is—free trade, and the buying and selling of wage slaves.

No worries, just glad to know progress is being made, initially they had to deal with red tape issues since people who had covid would normally be banned from donating for several months. They have been quite good at using a pragmatic approach when it comes to red tape though so I'm not surprised they solved that quickly.

I feel like folks here are pretty hard on Fauci. He's got to do his job without getting thrown out the door and replaced by Jared Kushner. It's a smart strategy to always keep the end of lockdown close, but just out of reach. Remember, we were apparently going to have everything opened up today. In May, he'll probably be saying early June. Think of him as Colonel Cathcart raising the mission count by five at a time.
