Regarding 1s and 20s- if you roll a 1, it's a critical failure. If you roll TWO 1s, it's a major fuckup, and 3 1s in a row can get you and or the party killed. A 20 on the other hand results in Good Things. A 20 followed by a 20 is Great Things, and trip 20s in a row result in Miraculous Events. I usually have the player roll percentage dice when they roll real good or real bad, to see if they have any allies around to help them out. You are the Main Character in your favorite book. Main Characters (with the exception of GRRM...) tend to stay alive through some incredible hardships. 1st-9th level characters get a Hero saving throw. A one last ditch effort to get you out of a jam. 9th level characters and up get a Super Hero saving throw, more levels equals more time to get friends and garner favors and such, plus luck. Players can also acquire Adventuring Checks, either through rolling a 20 or doing something funny or clever or saving the life of an NPC, for examples. hmmm was thinking of making my bug guy more venom focused than that and had an idea instead of being rogue/fighter since we now have two more conventional warrior types, could I instead switch things up like so: str-15 int-17 wis-15 dex-18 agl-18 con-15 pre-15 and make a 4/2 rogue/toxin specialist kinda thing? maybe make it have rogue or even wizard type hitpoints dunno, whatever seems fair really basically have the venom as one of his classes main abilities (perhaps also include normal thri kreen racial abilities?) and increase its potency/be able to tailor it more as time goes on? perhaps make a d20 roll on each attack to determine if the a toxin has a chance of working then they get a save with a range of effects from damage to paralysis dependent on level? also a bit of toxin crew trivia here but the red-eyed assassin bug has venom glands that can make up a third of its body weight, it can completely paralyze its prey in seconds and a bite (well stab with their rostrum) or even a spray of aerosolized venom from one can kill a guinea pig hundreds of time the insects weight in less than thirty seconds! fortunately they prey on insects, paralyzing and/or killing them before using injected enyzmes to completely liquify the internal tissues of their food before consuming it like soup through a straw (the straw being their rostrum). they can also spray venom all around themselves and the surrounding area as a defensive mechanism and, while not fatal, their bites are still extremely painful to humans. luckily unlike their relatives the triatominae they aren't implicated in the spread of parasitic disease humans use them to control a number of pest species such as rhinoceros beetles and deliberately introduce them to coconut plantations so despite them sounding sinister they're actually our good insect buddies!

or just thought of an easier way to actually do that without worrying about making up a class level 4 rogue, move the 17 back to strength, drop the 2 multiclass levels and get basic thri kreen racial abilities plus every 2 levels can evolve more potent/varied versions of those abilities with a focus on venom or something? also can't use most armor cause weird body shape but has somewhat effective natural armor in form of carapace + keep the magic items already assigned?

EDIT: I'm using this wiki page as a guide for what your race/class is, and will consider your character to be a Party enhancer based on what I'm reading so far. bit of a dumb question, but after rolling stats do I pick race etc by the book or do you want us to roll 20 for 'em? It seems 5e Loremaster is a subclass of wizard, and class is the only thing I have nailed down for this.

not sure if i still need to do an equipment roll, got magical items but was thinking weapons and normal equipment also trying to figure what stat bonuses Thri-Kreen should get, maybe +2 dex and agl, + 1 wisdom, - 2 presence? e: for weapons wanted a heavy crossbow as main one and four hand crossbows - figure Tak usually fights with the heavy crossbow in his top two arms but up close sometimes switches to using the extra two hand crossbows for maximum cool factor lol

If you have a request for a specific magic item, I'm open for ideas. +2 Dex/Agil +1 Wis and -3 Presence (Thri Kreens are wildly rare in my world so you'd freak people out, especially as an assassin bug). A crossbow will require at least one free hand to reload, a heavy crossbow and a two-hander equipped at once I will allow. You can fire one heavy cross bow bolt and one 2-handed bolt per round (including re-loading time). The 2-handed crossbow does 2 D8 damage per bolt, the heavy crossbow does 1d10, both piercing damage.
