Something about this feels kinda hinky
It's a term that's older than podcasts, and yeah that's basically how it started. Then it carried over when people started putting out recordings in podcast form, and from there to the popular shows.

It's just useful to separate podcasts where they play the games from podcasts where they just talk about the games or the industry or whatever. Having done both I can say the funniest thinng about the name is just that AP feels so different from just regular tabletop RPG nights that the word actual seems wrong while you're making it.

Guess it's sorta the "reality" in reality television of the equally huge market of RPG podcasting

The Civil War: A History Podcast is pretty good, just expect some rough audio in early episodes.

Uh yeah ok here is a small list of p'casts I have been digging, ya dig?
The Atheist Experience - yes its self described atheists owning the christians again and again. I find it comforting as I used to be a christian and it helps with residual doubt and guilt. Its also fascinating to hear the psychology of both sides. Ad nausum.
The Psychedelic Saloon. This cheerful boomer introduces old audio tapes of Ram Dass, Terence Mckenna and ilk rambling and being cultish. Again, strangely comforting. I think its the boomer optimism of how it was all to be sorted soon enough.
The Science Hour. BBC. Current affairs mixed with populae science. Fills the hole left by science mags like Scientific American.
Switched on Pop. Nerds get into the grit of pop music. Similar vibe to Todd in the Shadows.
Friendly Fire. West produced war movies discussed and deviated from.
The Well. This is an odd one. Its basically the actor who plays the captain in the latest star trek discovery talking poo poo with his pals. He has a good voice? They mainly talk American rock music.

if you like Friendly Fire you might want to check out other podcasts featuring national treasure John Roderick:

Roderick on the Line: John's long running weekly conversation with SF-based productivity expert Merlin Mann. Mostly John telling stories about his life and Merlin getting increasingly anxious about how they end.

Road Work: John's ~weekly conversation with podcast network owner Dan Benjamin mostly about inner self reflection.

Omnibus: John's newer show with Jeopardy's Ken Jennings about ephemeral subjects, framed as a time capsule for future generations to understand our weirdness.

If you have the time, I cannot recommend starting at ROTL episode 0 and going all the way through, enough.

Yes, it is 379 >1 hour episodes spread out over 9 years, but the story arcs the show has generated (Merlin's cat, John's attempts to get back into music, John's run for Seattle city council, Supertrain, John's attempt to hide the name of his daughter for years, John's many dealings with houses and renovations, etc) are really the cornerstone of the show.

I know there's a billion actual play podcasts out there, but does anyone have any recommendations of ones with a bit more of a sci-fi bent to them, like where they're playing Shadowrun or Eclipse Phase or something like that? Ideally something a little loose and joke-y, like Not Another DnD Podcast.

When I was 17, my father was so stupid, I didn't want to be seen with him in public. When I was 24, I was amazed at how much the old man had learned in just 7 years.

Neoscum, probably. Also if you like Star Wars, the first half of Campaign is Star Wars and it's very very loose and jokey.

There is an AP recommendation thread in TG that might have other answers: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3743698

This is a little niche, but if you like short but effective old-fashioned ghost stories, A Podcast to the Curious - The M.R. James Podcast has been great. Book clubbing it is easy, since most stories are 10-15 minute reads (or 30 minute youtube audiobooks). The obsession with the history of places and objects that drives much of the horror in James' stories really appeals to me, and is pretty alien to contemporary culture. It's strangely refreshing, and the hosts do a good job of exploring it with a lot of biographical context.

Anyone know a weekly or monthly podcast about the marijuana industry? I don't want stoner talk, more like a look at the industry, its biggest players, upcoming legal changes in various states, latest in research on medical benefits... that sort of stuff.

Bit of a random ask, but are there any good 30 min sitcoms rewatch pods? Hopefully hosted by actors/writers/comedians? 30 min sitcoms are my comfort watches, and I have been loving Office Ladies and Fake Doctors, Real Friends.

semi-related but after a recommendation in another thread I checked out Dave and Jeb Aren't Mean and Lifetime Uncorked, they're not really about sitcoms but the first one is about Hallmark movies and the other is...well Lifetime ones, obviously. I haven't really dived much into the Lifetime one but Dave and Jeb Aren't Mean was so good I literally just subscribed to their patreon to get the first like 20 episodes and their other stuff.

I watched that video, and I get how "it's all a conspiracy by bad people" is a persuasive argument, but I don't understand how people can stay onboard with her whole deal after she has explained that they closed the beaches because seawater has healing properties and they're making everyone wear masks because wearing a mask reactivates dormant flu cells inside your body.

Rather enjoying 'wind of change' so far.
Except the fact that the full season is only on spotify, something that's gonna start happening more often I think.
Anyway, I didn't know about this urban legend that wind of change by the scorpions was written by the CIA.
Regardless of wether that's true or not, there are some crazy stories and characters turning up in the interviews that make it quite entertaining.

Maybe one day Spotify will add advanced features like notification for new episodes, or stop the autoplaying poo poo, or not make downloading a premium loving feature and I'll be able to actually use their app.
