Hello! I see you.

Just got to the new year, and uh... :suspense:

I knew from the pre-release stuff that there was going to be a section in some sort of a weird dream world where everyone's deepest wishes come true, with Morgana being human and a bunch of dead people being alive, but I didn't realize it'd start immediately after you finish the main part of the game. I'm guessing Akechi also isn't real, because his reappearance at that exact moment when Joker was about to get arrested was way too convenient (please don't spoil anything, I already read some stuff about Yoshizawa and Maruki I wish I hadn't).

I was overconfident from how easy I beat the second palace and I forgot about the difficulty spike in the third palace. Got pretty deep, but if I recall the safe room mechanic for a while is that you have to backtrack to the first one. Wiped pretty deep in and have to start over.

Just finished dungeon 4, got 5 maxed confidants (Ryuji, Ann, Yusuke, Kawakami, and Yoshida with charm and proficiency maxed and 4s in the other. Overall it's not one big thing but a ton of a little things that make this an improvement. Love the gun stuff, showtimes, guillotine alarms, extra areas (Kichijoji as it reminds me of my favorite spot when I went to Nagoya, and yes i know it's a real place), and upgrades to baton passes.

Also, the strength "hangouts" with the twins are hilarious, holy poo poo.

First play through down. Goddamn, what a game to be stuck in a quarantine with. Some (very spoilery) thoughts:

1. Maruki was a fantastic antagonist and great capstone to the game. I really like how he thematically bookends Kamoshida. Definitely came away ultimately fundamentally disagreeing with his ideology, but I don't necessarily think he was wrong either, if that makes sense. I do wish there had been a little more content with him post-palace besides his brief appearance in the end cutscene, but it's fine. I liked the little fistfight even if it was corny as hell. Also goddrat Throw Away Your Mask is incredible.

2. Sumire was also a great addition, honestly surprised how well she and Maruki were woven into the story. That said there were some weird quirks with her writing that stuck out. The whole plot about her phone acting up was either a complete red herring or a dropped plot point, and then there's the whole thing where once she accepts she's Sumire she goes to hair down + glasses, but then when you get her to Rank 10 she... goes back to dressing like Kasumi? I think the implication was that she reconciled her identity while also taking on aspects of Kasumi's? Maybe? It felt kinda clumsy.

3. I didn't really need 5 minutes of all the female confidants giving Joker obligation chocolates, but the White Day additions were pretty great. Sojiro rules.

4. So I guess Maruki was straight up lying about Akechi? The post credits clip where he appears was clearly teasing Scramble, and there's no way Akechi doesn't show up given how popular he is with the fanbase.

5. Speaking of Akechi, my most surprising takeaway from Royal was that the Akechi additions were not a trainwreck. In fact I... kinda like him as a character. I don't like him as a person, and I'd struggle even to call him particularly sympathetic, but as a character he felt much more fleshed out in Royal. You actually get to see how he becomes attached to and slowly nurtures a growing hatred for Joker in their confidants, and far from giving in to any power of friendship crap he's only working with the party through teeth gritted so tight they're about to crack because of a mutual goal. He actually feels like something of an essential narrative foil to Joker here.

6. If I have one major gripe it's that the extra month you get in Royal feels pretty dang rushed in places. All the third awakening scenes which are supposed to be culminating moments for the Thieves are half copy pasted and all unvoiced. Ditto the first days of January where you go around convincing everybody to wake up from the malaise of Maruki's new reality. They went to the trouble to dub and re-write so many vanilla scenes that were previously unvoiced, so why is all this stuff suddenly not? I don't know why it bugged me so much.

On a non spoiler front I appreciate just how much there's tons of new content sprinkled in everywhere, from actually mechanically meaningful stuff to just little touches of characters showing up in the background more and earlier so they actually feel like a part of the world prior to their story relevance. Gripes aside I think this about as much as I could ask for in a remaster: the game genuinely feels retooled for the better from almost every angle.

Quarantine or no I'm probably going to give the game a week or two before I dive back in for a NG+ though. I don't know if I have the stomach right now to sit through the 5-6 hours it takes the game to get off the ground.

Also agree with the bulk of your points but especially the unvoiced dialogue in January. How the gently caress are we still doing this? How do you leave the Rank 11 scenes unvoiced. loving Golden had voiced Rank 11s for gently caress sake.

If you have the inclination to play P5 again at all then this is a great enhancement but if it's still fresh in your mind and replaying it isn't a priority then I'd say wait. It's really, really good but I only played P5 at release and didn't get all the way to the end (tapped out at the last part in December so was right near the true ending) so 3 years have made me forget a lot of it.

This game is hard, I got halfway through the first palace and managed to kill all the level 9 red enemies in the areas I’d gone to, and then went back and did a little grinding by killing everything else again to run down my remaining SP before leaving. I’m level 7 on April 28th and have a week left before I’m in trouble - should I spend Sunday grinding or am I probably able to finish the castle? I spent my yen on new guns (and slightly improved melee weapons for when I’m low on SP) and bought a couple of minor SP items but couldn’t find many. I also seem to be gated from the Death confidant until I hit a certain guts level?

Also, I noticed I have four gold summons in the compendium from the DLC. Someone in here mentioned they’re game breaking so I planned to avoid them, but even with that in mind, I can’t summon them until I’m their level right?

One of the DLC summons has an almighty attack that hits all enemies 3 times for a ton of damage (this will kill all enemies up to some of the harder enemies in the 4th dungeon), and has a skill that recovers all HP and SP after each battle, so yeah its game breaking. I suppose if you want to do an easy way to grind it isn't bad though.

Only time I've used the DLC personas was to get a Death persona right at the start for Tae. I also fused an Izanagi at one point, but I was already lvl20+ so I consider that fair game. Cross Slash is loving awesome and it makes me sad that it doesn't transfer on fusion.

The DLC is less game breaking if you just itemize the free ones. They make very powerful items, but the accessories are more on par with upgraded Treasure Demon ones than anything else. The skill cards can be pretty broken, but are usually so expensive that they can’t really be used much until the latter part of the game where they aren’t quite so ridiculous since they’re stuck to the weak personas you have available.

In general, my advice is to not use the free ones, but ones you get from fusions are okay as long as they’re within a few levels of your character. Aside from Izanagi-no-Okami. He’s just broken in general. And maybe Thanatos’ main skill is a bit too much for his level.

Raoul just seems appropriate to go through the final dungeons with and isn’t that overpowered with his skills.

Yoshitsune is absolutely bonkers now that he can get the ability that triples charge/concentrate effects. Charge + the attack that hits eight times wipes out pretty much anything that isn't null to physical. It's even more hilarious when you don't need to burn a round charging because Joker decided to activate Flow.

Yea I didn't wanna do the DLC Personas in my game so I also remade my bro Yoshitsune, which as expected, remains hilariously broken.

I'm getting close to the end of the first palace playing on Hard (trying to get through the whole palace in one run), and I'm pretty sure the SP boost from getting these Will Seeds is going to end up saving me. Things were getting pretty dire and I was starting to expect that I'd run out before getting through it, but I'm close to the end now and, thanks to the Will Seeds, still have maybe 2/5 of my SP on my characters.

I've actually been kind of surprised at the amount of changes to this palace. Are the others changed roughly as much? While most is obviously the same, it seems like I'm encountered new things fairly frequently.

I can't point out the specifics, however, I'm at palace 3 and mostly I'm not annoyed or bored with the palaces when I oneshot them. I believe that's due to the changes. In a lot of cases in P5:Vanilla they had you repeat the same mechanic over and over in a palace.

It can also get Yusuke charge which actually makes using him instead of Ryuji almost justifiable.

I'm looking forward to actually being able to experience some of these new places and mechanics in more depth come NG+. I don't dislike the social stats system persay, but it does make it really hard to justify goofing off when you could be using valuable time slots to instead raise stats that are needed when you're up against a confidant skill gate.

I’m not a big fan of it either, but it wouldn’t be as annoying if we had more opportunities to raise a stat without consuming time. Like taking care of the plant or eating random stuff in the fridge did.

Or, better yet, add a third day segment where you can do one simple action like reading or laundry. That way you don’t feel like you wasted the entire night just to eat a hamburger or do a few pull-ups. It would feel a lot more realistic than saying you can spend hours hopping around the city to shop everywhere, but take four hours to make two cups of coffee or one lock pick.

To be fair, that innate is badly worded. It raises Charge's boost to 3x from 2.5x so it's somewhat less stupidly powerful than what it seems and there are thus better physical innates if you manage to propagate them to Yoshitsune.

Of course getting the charge+ innate on Yoshi is basically free, as it comes directly from a component of the fusion, so I guess the devs decided he wasn't already fukken broken enough.
