I enjoy ESPNU’s commitment to not showing games that were particularly good or appealing. Opening with a game that was competitive for one quarter and showing the Frisco Bowl in prime time.

The gamer word making it's way into Nascar broadcasts, shocking:

https://www.cbc.ca/sports/nascar-kyle-larson-racial-slur-1.5530726

quote:

Kyle Larson's racial slur cost him his two primary NASCAR supporters. It likely will cost him his job soon.

McDonald's and Credit One Bank ended their sponsorship of Larson on Monday, a day after he used the N-word during a live stream of a virtual race. The decision came hours after NASCAR and Chip Ganassi Racing suspended Larson indefinitely, his team doing so without pay.

This seems like a random tangent, but I don't get why news outlets can't just say he used a racial slur instead of "he used the N-word". It makes it sound like we're all back in elementary school or something.

Probably to be more specific, since racial slur could be a lot of things. It does sound silly though.

This is just what old sports video games were like.

The Pussy Boss

https://twitter.com/GolfDigest/status/1250232019063275521

The PGA plans to resume the tour in June. I doubt it happens; like baseball's idea of playing games in Arizona, this feels like a contingency plan in case things magically get better. Still, I think this is the first US sport to name a specific date when they'll be back.

The Pussy Boss
Nov 2, 2004

MLB stars not thrilled with the Arizona plan:

Mike Trout posted:

"There’s a lot of red flags," Trout said in an interview with NBC Sports. "We want to get back as soon as we can, but obviously it’s got to be realistic. It can’t be sitting in our hotel rooms, just going from the field to the hotel room and not being able to do anything. I think that’s pretty crazy."

One of Trout's greatest concerns with the reported proposal is its impact on the players' families. Trout and his wife Jessica are expecting their first child in August.

"What am I going to do when she goes into labor?" Trout said. "Am I going to quarantine for two weeks after I come back? Cause obviously I can't miss the birth of our first child."

Clayton Kershaw posted:

"I will say that situation, I just don’t see that happening. I’m not going to be away from my family and not seem them for four and a half months. I just talked about how much Cooper changes over one week, so to miss four months of his life right now, I’m just not going to do it.

“And there’s a lot of other things that are just wrong with that proposal. But it’s not to say we can’t go somewhere with it. There’s just a lot of things they’re going to have to figure out before I go quarantine myself with my team for four months.

I can understand how somebody with no family, maybe it’s their first few years, would be OK with any type of baseball being played. I understand that. Just from my personal vantage point, I think there’s something special about Major League Baseball. You start taking away layers of it — whether it be fans in the stands, big stadiums, travel, different things like that — it takes away a little bit of the meaningfulness of the games. I’m all for trying to figure out a solution. I don’t know if I’m in the minority or majority as far as wanting to figure out maybe a little better strategy. I understand the times that we’re in and everybody trying to adapt. All I’ll say is I hope we can come to some type of solution fast, for sure, that I can actually see my family. That’s my only request."

when do you think the next major sporting event (big 4, mls, golf, tennis, cfb, cbb ) will take place in America with a full complement of fans in attendance?

Next summer maybe? Assuming the peak of the pandemic, or second peak or whatever, hits in the fall, then things slowly get better, although not back to "normal", by next spring?

Given some of the idiotic "protests" going on in some states, I could see two schools in a CFB-crazy state putting together a Homecoming game this fall and attracting a crowd of yahoos from all over.

If Liberty hadn't already had its failed re-opening then I'd have penciled them in as one candidate.

In terms of legit sanctioned people-have-optimism game, maybe May/June 2021 for baseball or car racing or golf, as a best-case scenario.

More likely Fall 2021 or Summer 2022.

The PGA plans to resume the tour in June. I doubt it happens; like baseball's idea of playing games in Arizona, this feels like a contingency plan in case things magically get better. Still, I think this is the first US sport to name a specific date when they'll be back.

hypothetically if they have like, one golfer, one referee (or whatever their equivalent is) and one cameraperson per hole and like maybe one camera man how many people would you really need to run a golf tournament? just stretch it out over weeks, not like anyone else is doing anything

Without the big zoom cameras on towers, I think it would be hard to watch / tell where shots were going. And setting those up is a major endeavor. Maybe the stadium-style courses would be easier since they have elevated positions that usually have fans but could be used for cameras.

Since I assume the whole point of this is to get something on TV to fulfill those contracts, skimping on the presentation might be a tough sell.

It's amazing what they can do with computers these days.

They might get some leniency for being literally the only live sport available.

Just borrow that old "glowing puck" technology that the NHL tried years ago right before HD got big enough that it became worthless.
