Oh poo poo, yeah. Tecate is pretty good. I think that's going to have to be my workhorse beer when I get back to the West Coast.

Grain of salt because it's a war story, but my dad told me Hamm's was like gold in Vietnam. They didn't put the same preservatives other beers did in their beer, which meant the shelf life was a lot shorter and it was easier to skunk from the heat but it was the only beer there that tasted like beer. He said a 5 for 1 Bud to Hamm case swap wasn't unusual.

Best beer might be a matter of opinion, but I think there's a strong contender for worst beer:

Back in my hometown, I had a Carvel ice cream place right across the street from my apartment, so all my family gatherings involved Fudgie the Whale ice cream cake.

One of my cousins gave me a couple of novelty beers that Carvel made based on that cake.

It's absolutely wretched. I've never tasted a more vile brew. Fudge, crunchy chocolate and beer are three tastes that absolutely do not complement each other. The can is worryingly labeled only as "malt beverage."

Might be the first beer I was physically unable to finish. I saved the last can for my next family gathering, so I can force my cousin to drink it.

For cheap beers, I like to pair them with a food or activity.
Schlitz with a braunschweiger and limburger sandwich.
Stag for camping or fishing.
Busch for pouring on barbecue and also drinking while barbecuing

Pale lager, so similar to bud or miller. I didn't get the hangover headaches like I'd get from bud.

The region is kind of having a renaissance of craft breweries right now. Off the top of my head, we have DC Brau and Denizens that are leading the pack; there’s also Right Proper and others. Triple Crossing in Richmond also makes some fantastic beers although their penetration is more limited in the DC area.

My current favorite is DC Brau’s “Joint Resolution” Hazy IPA.

Not gonna dip my pinky toe into a craft beer argument (even though there's lots of good places), I just wanted to say re: NZ beer that Steinlager was really good to sip on a hot day on the beach. I worked in Hawaii several times and would grab it at those little ABC stores in Oahu on the way back to the hotel most nights. I am sad they no longer export to the lower 48.

For cheap beer, I'd go with Tecate or maybe Rolling Rock cause I'm a weirdo. Lone Star is absolute dog piss and I'd reach for almost anything else before i'd grab it out of the cooler. 90% of people outside TX drink it cause it was on True Detective

E: for local breweries, my favorite place that is too small to really distribute is doing online delivery/drive thru orders and I am faithfully signing over a percentage of my paycheck each week. I hope they survive this mess

Haven’t had that, never seen it for sale around here. The McConnells is supposedly the oldest known Irish recipe and they just brought the name/recipe back. It’s pretty smooth 👍🏻

If it's Carpenter Brut related, then it's allowed. Encouraged, even.

The Brut also have this up on their YouTube channel. Another thing they "scored" although it's pretty subdued. I think what's in here would be pretty dope as the intro to their next album, though.
