This isn’t true btw. My wife has an old person moving into her home next week that’s been in hospital on a ward where Covid was and they are saying no tests and that they have to accept them. Dumb as gently caress.

It would be alright if it was only the people who had already been confirmed for the virus and had ward treatment, since they're most likely out of the viral shedding phase.

Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case in your situation.

Yeah I work in this industry and this has been absolutely apocalyptic. Everything was cancelled by the start of March and the news was dribbled out from then on. A few things have rescheduled to October but everyone knows they aren’t happening.

My entire year was 60k+ people arena shows and large scale corporate. There is a danger that the corporate event market is dead permanently. The way companies look at sending people from 20+ countries to mingle in breakout rooms and watch PowerPoint is likely to change forever.

The events industry has a long tail and when people do want to start up again all the suppliers are going to be dead unless they’re SSE or PRG.

Likewise. I’m hoping that we’re small enough and have a focus on design skills and a background in other tech enough to adapt better than some of the bigger incumbents but it’s a loving scary time.

PRG were already in the shitter from buying VER and all the bad stuff that came with that, word is they were on the verge of bankruptcy anyways. Solotech are huge of course but this coming after they just put a huge outbound expenditure on buying all of SSE and co isn’t ideal either.

The most fun part is that if the big boys do go belly up, there’ll be tons of premium kit on the used market for peanuts - which will likely just push the already far too low prices down even further for the little scraps that are likely to be left.

Industry chat aside, people maybe don’t realise how many people are employed by the events world and the peripheries of hospitality, nor how many other industries rely on the fringes and access to adjacent markets. I can’t see the government doing any specialist stimulus though, footie is obviously way more important or just has better lobbying power.

I passed it first time at forty five, three years ago, and my test was in Romford at rush hour. Calm, and in control at all times is key; if you get flustered or frustrated easily, you’ll need to practice long enough for that to not be the case when you drive.

But it's a pretty good way to get someone to spend money on buying you an av and sig. Maybe I should be really obnoxious and get an upgrade myself

Moral of the story: be careful what you wish for.

You are welcome.
I did mine at 26, was doing lessons an hour a week for about a year and a half, and I failed 3 times because I got anxious during the test and would get flustered.

The best advice I can give is to do two-hour lessons, instead of one. You learn a lot faster and retain muscle memory and knowledge better.

It's expensive but you only have to do it once, then you got a license forever if you behave yourself. Like someone else pointed out, if you need to move house, the ability to rent a van for a day is absolutely invaluable.

Insurance sucks, though, I pay 2500 a year for mine, despite being older, just because of where I live. I have 18 and 19-year-old friends paying half of what I pay for their insurance on nicer cars.

edit: I'd say the main difficulty is just getting comfortable with the car. They're not hard to drive, but even coming from years of riding motorbikes it took me months to feel comfortable in the driver's seat. Once you pass, and start driving on your own, though, you'll very quickly become relaxed with driving.

Watching all the various instagram accounts I follow rebrand to solotech just before this happened was certainly interesting. I'm looking out for sigma design flyracks to start appearing cheap. Hopefully. Maybe. Give us a job. :v:

People absolutely do not understand how far the tendrils of the event industry reach. Yards full of Heras, trackway, plant rental, generator towers, temporary structures especially. I know one of the _huge_ bigtop companies in the UK was already struggling last year so this will probably do them. This all has a huge knock on to wedding venues, the nice little cafes on national trust properties that are propped up by Mrs and Mr footballer renting the entire stately home for a wedding. On and on and on and on. All on the backs of self employed freelancers and tiny production companies orbiting the big boys.

I did one lesson a week for a few months, took the test in a car I wasn't familiar with and failed horribly.

After that I was lucky enough that my route to college was along the same route my Dad took to work. So I drove to college each morning with him in the car, he continued on to work and I took the bus home. I arranged to take the test in my own car (just had to buy an extra mirror) and passed easily.

Once you've got the basic mechanics down, the best way to learn to drive is to just drive in traffic, although I understand not everyone has that luxury.

Furlough pay got extended to everyone employed up until the 19th March - it was 28th Feb until today. This is (hopefully) good news for my wife, as the franchise she works for was taken over by a new company in early March, so although her job didn't change, her employer did, so we didn't think she'd be able to get it.

I’ve heard of at least one person (possibly in this thread weeks ago?) who had a job offer rescinded after handing in their notice, and will be saved by this.

So good news.

I passed my driving test during rush hour in Aylesbury, a hellhole with a one way system and myriad roundabouts on the crest of hills, which require you to select the right lane based on faith far before any signs telling you.

Fortunately the gridlock meant that there was very little driving to be done, just sitting in jams for 20 mins. Would recommend.

Note the specific wording that you need to have been on an RTI submission by the 19th March. For most people, that means they need to have been physically paid by the new employer before the 19th in order to be eligible. If you were employed on the 26th February but didn't actually get paid until the 25th March, then you get kilroy.mpeg instead.

Your wife should be covered anyway though if she's a TUPE, as that's included under the existing rules

I ended up having to take lessons for nearly a year because I failed the hazard perception twice and there was an outrageous wait re-book it. I didn't want to stop the lessons 'cause I was afraid I might "forget" how to drive and it'd put me further behind. My instructor made bank off of me.

I don't think the question was about the response the government has chosen to take, it was specifically about governance i.e. How are things being run.

Listening to the medical experts, hosting daily press briefings, and passing emergency laws is pretty much what any party would be doing. The Reuters investigation seems to lame the blame for a lot of the inactivity at the feet of the science and medical experts, and then at the government for not challenging their advice, which honestly I can't imagine Corbyn would have done either. Before this what type of politician would challenge the chief medical officer in the middle of a growing medical crisis about their complex and sophisticated models and detailed pandemic response plans? The answer is probably someone like Trump who would say its all a hoax or something.

There needs to be a reckoning when it's all done but I've never voted Tory in my life nor do I plan to, yet I don't think they've really done much that anyone else wouldn't have done after it's all hit. The big questions are about how we prepared (we didn't) both in terms of the general state of the NHS and the specific preparations we should have been taking in early 2020.

Whether or not the media would fall in line is sort of a separate issue to what the government is doing.

Catfishenfuego posted:

Germany: We're having a lockdown, here's a list of specific rules to follow, here are the exact reasons you can leave the house, here is the distance you can stay from people, here are guidelines for all businesses to follow.

Britain: We're having a lockdown, if your nan asks you to visit, say no.

Shockingly Germany are already able to start relaxing restrictions while Britain has a nonfunctional government with no plan for a lockdown exit who's 'leader' just openly flaunted the rules after almost dying because he openly flaunted scientific advice.

Edit: Also a government that isn't ideologically obsessive about murdering the poor would probably have released more funding to stop people starving than less than 1% of the amount that just the city of Berlin paid out just to support artists.
