Same, though they apparently completely forgot to test the plots with it. Maybe they finally have those all worked out with this latest patch?

I may have forgotten how tedious the PHQ quest is then. I hadn't thought of that.

I think at this point they've worked all of those out. I'm playing with that start and I've completed the initial plot and advanced the Split and Paranid plots to the point where you have to start delivering fleets.

Welp, clicked on the wrong option when steam said I had to resolve a steam cloud conflict and lost about 24 hours of progress. Time to shelve this game until the next expansion comes out I guess.

Wait, free corvette?! Where/when do you get that? I'm on the Young Gun start, so I assume I'm eligible to get it. I assume it's part of the PHQ quests? (Since I've found it, but I haven't bothered with building a dock for it yet)

Yeah I don't remember a free corvette but it's not a huge issue if you don't get one, they're not very expensive.

Yeah, you get a free corvette of the race of the station where you talk to the boron first (eg if you talk to boron first in Argon space you'll get a cerberus). It shows up as an abandoned ship in the sector just before the boron makes his escape from the station and you have to escort a freighter out of the sector.

Was that in from the start? I did that plot at version 1.0 and I don't remember getting a cerberus.

It's a decent starter reward certainly but I still wouldn't do the plot for it, you can buy one with a couple of truckloads of nividium.

Aslso, depending on your start and mods, you can blatt the free corvette for its blueprint.
unfortunately, until they fix it or not, starting the boso ta/HQ mission in FRF space does not get you a Cobra, you get a Cerb. sadly (Why yes, I already tried)

What's the best way to utilize turrets on a corvette like the dragon with vanilla weapons? None of the options seem to contribute much of anything, especially compared to the six tau accelerators spitting hot death out the front. I'm also not so interested in spending ages wearing down a Xenon K by myself, otherwise I'm might stick with plasma for the sake of maximizing DPS.

OwlFancier
Aug 22, 2013

They're kind of decorative in vanilla unfortunately. As there's not much in the way of missile threats (so you don't need PD and it likely wouldn't be very effective anyway) and even the heavy guns don't necessarily contribute that much.

Plasma probably is the best option in that it at least helps slug away at large targets but yeah there's not a great deal of point in them. You might have some success installing modifications in them to improve their characteristics but even then it's pretty marginal.

You need a lot of weapons in general to really do much of anything in vanilla, which is one of the big reasons I don't enormously care for vanilla weapon balance. They're all pretty weak and rely on volume of fire more than anything, there's no real equivalent of stuff like HEPTs or other high damage weapons you can jam into a single slot.

I saw the boarding tutorial pop up during that mission and had no idea why, because I only got the pop up and no further explanation.

I followed the dumb freighter, fought off one lousy attacker, and then one of my own freighters notified me it had found the abandoned Cerberus just off the highway in Argon Prime. The mission freighter was slow boating to the jump gate so I turned around, figured out how to claim the corvette, then flew back and waited for the next 10 mins as the mission freighter refused to use travel mode.

So I thought the corvette was just serendipitous, though it did strike me as odd that the game had spawned such a nice abandoned ship so close to the highway. Or that I had not found it in the previous twenty hours of gameplay.

It's a nice ship, faster than the Elite and the free ship I got from the first HAT plot mission, way more guns, but its mains are the slow firing plasma cannons, which seem to be almost useless at killing small ships. They're Mk2s though and they melt medium ships so I haven't swapped them out.

I bought a Nova Vanguard to park on the Cerberus's porch and I just hop into that when necessary.

What sort of defense station do you need to hold up against xenon in VRO?
I had one protecting a teladi sector with 4 disk loaded with the biggest guns I could find and it got erased the minute I pulled ou my destroyers and looked the other way.

Depends what attacked it. That much firepower will do a lot of damage but if the xenon come with a big fleet they might destroy the four platforms first. Especially disc platforms because while they have a lot of guns they pack them all onto a very small hull.

Generally you want to distribute your defences over more modules, so I'd use bridge modules and overbuild quite a lot. Like ten modules at least. Alternatively keeping the destroyers around as a screen would be a good idea.

I hired a very, very slow construction ship.
He took more than one hour to build half a triple pier, I then went to scan it and noticed he only has 3 construction drone.
Is there a legit way to sack him or sell him drones ?

Ass_Burgerer

NPC construction ships have a random number of drones when they spawn. There's no way to increase it. This is to encourage you to buy your own constructor so you can stuff it full of drones yourself.

Yeah, you really got to scan them and count their drones before hiring them.

The autopilot is so bad at dealing with getting off highways, drat. Every time, it just shunts me through the next gate. It'd keep riding the loop around if I didn't baby it.

There's also some glitch where if I pass up my exit, then quickly disable and re-enable the AP, it'll teleport me back to the other end of the highway.

There's a bunch of really basic but major bugs with guidance, targeting and autopilot that have existed since release, the kind of basic stuff you'd imagine would be sorted out way before the first expansion.

Yet, if you tell your pilot to take you there this problem never happens. You'd think the pilot 'auto-pilot' would be running the same algorithm as your auto-pilot.

It's odd, my Peregrine shred in out-of-sector battle but if I'm in the sector, they get murdered by a Xenon I laser beams (with VRO).
I have 3 Rattlesnake with 25 Peregrine and in out of sector battle they are able to comfortably mop up a Xenon sector, it's a shame I can't go there to enjoy the fireworks
I'm starting to think a ton of fighter may be the only option outside of player controled destroyer, but they will take huge atrition (=$$$) from the Xenon fighters whereas the corvete + destroyers mix is pretty much immune to fighter.

Egosoft seems to have major problems with this sort of thing. Had to use mods to prevent autopilot from crashing into poo poo in X3 and they never bothered fixing it.

They did remove collision damage to hull and add in a sound clip that plays if the autopilot crashes you into something at high speed :v:

I think a lot at Egosoft comes down to singular people's skill sets. They absolutely have an engine wizard on staff, but navigating in 3d space is a similarly non-trivial thing and they don't have an autopilot wizard.

I almost didn't believe my ears the first time this one triggered for me. :v: Egosoft isn't afraid to let some pretty quirky humor leak into their games. Boso Ta also drops a DBZ Abridged reference of all things at a certain point in his quest line if you loiter about for long enough.

OwlFancier
Aug 22, 2013

It is also worth noting that the 3d space navigation is vastly better than it was in X3, because in X3 the only way the AI could handle station was to fly towards them, turn around when it got too close, fly sideways a bit, then fly towards them again. It literally could not path around objects other than by trial and error. Whereas now they can actually fly around quite complex stations, they just sometimes bump into them and other things. But it's still miles better than it was, it just looks like the pilot is a bit drunk sometimes rather than being actually a floor turtle that somehow found its way into a spaceship.

I'm down to Sedatives which I hear are pirate drops and crystals that after hours of hunting I've found every type but the type I want. Heck I've found a couple spawns of Burnite which is the rarest but zero of Mitonene. Anyone know a better place then Faulty Logic for Crystal hunting? I'm getting tired of all the mines.

At least with the normal goods I can just use my factories but these search the universe for RNG drops are killing me.
