Is there anyplace where the whole scope of Goonswarm's insane wars has been posted? It's kind of insane how successful it has been.

I've long said that Goonfleet/swarm deserves a writeup. If not in a book then in an American Culture thesis paper.

I joined back in 05, back in the heyday of catlady GBS 1.0, back when goon meets were massive, the usual big names made comedy gold and radium still... "programmed". To me that was peak SA, where being a goon was mocked internally but at the same time if anyone outside of SA took a swipe, you could count on a swarm of goons to jump in and help you... Just because for kicks and to wreck poo poo. I never really played many mmorpgs, but back then, if you did you not only had a guild that had your back, but you had access to a huge treasure trove of gear to get you started. It was crazy and the forums were so busy, if any clan needed muscle, all that was needed was a half decent GBS thread. Good Times. Speaking of goons loving with MMOs, what was that Chinese MMO that they would constantly grief? Age of Wushu or something like that? They would pick the drunkard fighting style where they could puke on everyone making people slip and get disoriented. And since the game had a feature where players could be jailed for attacking other players and have a bounty put on them, goons would goad people into killing them while the rest of them would kill the guy and steal all their stuff.

My strongest memory of goons messing with MMOs was someone discovering a very niche game where you were some sort of deer spirit. Goons started griefing by having their character neigh constantly and the back and forth between mitigation attempts by the devs and goons upping the ante ending in the MMO having an apocalypse and ending. Unsure if it restarted once goons got bored but in retrospect it felt like a “huh-huh loving furries” attack on a small community and I’m not proud for laughing at it back in the day.

Thanks, Meg. I'll be fine. A lot of people are in much worse situations but stress and emotions never care about that sort of logic, and I tend to have a lot of stress and emotions even at the best of times. Thanks everyone else too for changing the subject for the moment. I'm sorry for the dam break.

I remember laughing at that while lurking. Incidentally, it was a goon raid on another community that had gotten me to join this place. I used to post on Gaia Online (which, at the time, I had taken to trolling myself in very lame and mean-spirited ways because of the really poor way the staff handled several pedophilia rings being uncovered by doing absolutely gently caress all about it.) and at one point goons just stormed through being goons and I was like "These people seem way cooler and more funny." And then I lurked for a while before joining after the paywall came up.

As much griefing that happend back in the day, I remember at least some of it could be not totally blamed on SA. Hell didn't the first great war in Eve (the one began the goons ascent) result from BOB being utter notorious asshat dicks? I also vaguely remember that Goons loved to take on a major guild leader in Planetscape 2 who was a notorious proto chud. Foul Ole Ron fucked around with this message at 01:07 on Apr 19, 2020 |

They did get griefed for being furries, but some of it was also that the people who played were involved in some intense RP because that was all they could do in the game and the constantly mooing "Penis Fawns" made a lot of them finally break kayfabe to complain. Someone wrote a book on the history of EVE Online, and naturally Goons are a significant part of it. In fact I believe one of the chapter titles is "ENTER GOONS" It's hard to understate just how much rep Goonswarm had, and how it leaked into other MMOs. Age of Wushu was mentioned (there was an event where the in-game moderators put bounties on themselves to encourage PVP play, so naturally goons formed a protective circle around them and took on all comers), but Star Trek Online had Starfleet Dental/Nerds of Prey, where griefing was a matter of either getting a fire extinguisher from an early mision and then hosing people down with white clouds in the social areas, or deploying goofy disco balls that you can buy during events that cause everyone, player and NPC alike, to start going through various dance emotes. Pathfinder Online was specifically advertised during its Kickstarter to be anti-griefer, and while I can't remember the details anymore I have no doubt that Goonswarm-esque tactics were what people were thinking about. Pathfinder Online also basically never made it out of its alpha stage of development, so that tells you how popular it was.

I have a link somewhere that I need to dig up, but the Crimson Haze thread ruled. Goons basically grieving an MMO that didn’t exist by an overly enthusiastic nerd high on his own farts. E:found it! https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3358114&perpage=40 A lot of the images are broken but it’s still a fun read and one of my favorite memories of the forums. That bloody turd logo from the second thread. I always have to laugh at how these OPs get real earnest advice from people that seem to know what they're talking about but instead of owning up and maybe learning something they insist on shitposting and rolling with the punches because of their wounded pride. Pathfinder Online also basically never made it out of its alpha stage of development, so that tells you how popular it was. The lead developer at the time, Ryan Dancey, was like "Hoo man we have so many plans to stop those naughty goons from griefing us! Don't worry they should stay far away!" Meanwhile SA posters looked at Pathfinder Online and realized it was boring and buggy heck and not in the "entertaining exploits to annoy people with" way and never even engaged with the game. Speaking of which, Ryan Dancey is something of an astounding snake oil salesman who also worked on EVE Online for a while and was fired after his money grab schemes like overpriced monocles cased massive backlash. He's also hosed around with various schemes in table top gaming that all end disastrously, but he manages to be far, far away by the time they implode. There was a great writeup of Pathfinder Online and Ryan Dancey himself on Medium here: https://medium.com/@kaitave/whatever-happened-to-pathfinder-online-anyway-addd9ee51c81

I was a part of a lot of the STO goon antics which started in early 2011 but ran between thereabouts and I guess 2015. Honestly, most of the humor value revolved around poking people who had an enormous head on their shoulders while rolling around the social areas with a character they were "RPing" which was always some flavor of child sexual abuse, sex slavery, or outright porn just written out there and then. It was worth it, and one of the occasions I remember that I personally participated in involved a carefully orchestrated charade, via someone's ingame ready room, to convince someone that all they had to do to join Shut Up Wesley (the now defunct goon fleet, but the other main ones still exist) was to pay ten bucks to join SA and post an intro thread in either FYAD or GBS. I am pretty sure it's the latter and I'm 100% sure the thread still exists somewhere. It played out exactly as you would expect.

The old griefing thread was fun when people weren’t loving it up. https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=2886637&perpage=40 The problem is a lot of modern MMO’s just don’t have the same potential for shenanigans.

that was what finally killed the thread but it had already had multiple timeouts by that point for various goons posting "griefs" that were basically just them doxing people or yelling slurs over voice chat.

In hindsight, something probably should've been done about the people so adamantly defending their right to say a slur then and there instead of letting it lay for several years more.
