GUNDAM!!!
I love Akechi so much. November/December spoilers He strikes me as the main character of another game where the player only chose evil options the entire time. He's so hilariously over the top. I've never actually beaten Shido's palace before in the original so I'm on new territory for me but the battle against him had some stellar dialog and delivery from him. He is kind of one dimensional but really entertaining.

The Q games seem to pick out the teams when they’re at their largest, so usually right before the bigger climactic events of their plots. I assume that a theoretical Q3 will give us the Thieves at a later point to let Kasumi in.

I mean she's not exactly sane at that point, and you could argue that as one of the only people that treats her as Kasumi she's latched onto him in a weird codependent thing.

If you're thinking of picking them up, maybe skip Q1. The writing is very bad and the dungeons are not great. Like "how have I gone 90 minutes without a save point on a handheld console" not great. They're both bottle stories so it's not like you miss anything.

That said, you can make door-kun get married to koromaru in it, so if that's your fetish go nuts.

Q2, however, is a gigantic step forward and is a consistently fun and well written game that I recommend to anyone who's played the Hashino persona games.

Got my whole party wiped minutes into fighting the fourth palace boss the other day. This was before it even got "serious." Hard mode has a habit of lulling me into a sense of security and then poking me in the eye.

Also, don't forget to let Ryuji sit that fight out. Don't be like me.

So this is probably a dumb question but is there any way on NG+ to get party members' third tier personas or at least the associated abilities early? It felt really dumb in my first playthrough that they get them SO LATE that they functionally only get to use them against the final final boss, and that's it.

Oh no, I mean this counts for damage the player deals as well. So basically it's impossible to lose a regular encounter because you get an ambush off and you oneshot all enemies with either a weakness spell or a sleep+lunge combo.

So according to stuff I've read, the skills they learn get added to the confessional in a NG+. That might be bullshit though, I've seen them in the confessional in the current playthrough at least. Makes the jazz club stuff you can get in the very late game a bit more useful if true as well.

Definitely. The biggest pleasant surprise in Royal for me was that the expansion of Akechi's role I fully expected to be a complete and total train wreck was actually really well done. His new confidant scenes are a slow burn of his mask slipping as his jealousy and hatred of Joker grow, and in the new month he's in full mask off psycho mode and only cooperating because of a critical shared goal.

Final, final boss spoiler: I also love how in the climax of the Maruki fight when the rest of the party is rattling off their emotional character culminating inspirational dialogues, Akechi just snaps at Joker "DO YOUR GODDAMN JOB!" :allears:

Yeah, the new content feels really really weird. It definitely feels like an addition to an otherwise separate game; it reads way more like fanfiction or a crossover event than the "canon" P5 story. I love what they did with him though. It just sucks that every other character now has to suck, you have to go through two LONG sections of having the exact same conversation with every single person TWICE, once to wake them up and again for the ultimate Persona. Making him continue to be a murder junkie is cool and his Nav lines are GREAT but at the same time it's hard to overlook Futaba crying about being able to see her mom again and then having to say goodbye again to an hour later where she goes and plays pool with her murderer

I do think there was a huge missed opportunity in not having one or two scenes where Futaba and/or Haru confront Akechi over Wakabe and Okumura's deaths. Even something as simple as a scene where Futaba goes to Akechi to confirm he did in fact kill Wakabe, and Akechi responds with some variant of "yes and I'm not sorry about it, I only regret that it was done in service to Shido who turned out to be my enemy" would have gone a long way. I also agree that both accept Akechi being part of the group way too readily, although I do think there was a way to thread the needle of him being in the party and those two accepting it, but being more vocally unhappy about it.

Hell, not just Futaba. Akechi walks right into Leblanc in front of Sojiro who knows he's the one who did it and he doesn't even get some sort of line about it. On an unrelated note, the whole premise of the new world is getting your wishes granted, but we don't have any sort of interaction with what it was he tried to tempt Akechi with? Another missed opportunity

Why does everyone think I'm going to get in trouble?

Maybe Akechi’s deepest desire was to be free from his sins, and to be able to spend more time with Joker? He freely admits that he hates him, but it does kind of feel like Joker’s his only friend at times. He’s wise to the deception though because he probably earnestly believes he doesn’t deserve a nice life like that.

If I were king poo poo of the universe i'd get Shoji Meguro to direct the next game, find Tadashi Satomi and hire him back to write it and get Atsushi Kitajoh to do the soundtrack. Hell, Kaneko's still kicking around, right?

I don't know if it was his deepest desire or not, but the temptation for Akechi was definitely a normal life where neither he nor Joker are criminals, and they can have a second shot at their relationship. Maruki spells out as much when he meets with the two at Lablanc. While the player can decide if that's ultimately tempting for Joker or not, it's clear Maruki severely miscalculated with Akechi who's not even tempted for a nanosecond. I think this ultimately comes down to an incongruity between Akechi's personality and Maruki's method: Maruki doesn't actually give people their specific most desired reality, he gives everybody the same reality (a static world where no choices, growth, or emotional and physical pain are possible) and brainwashes those whose personalities or desires conflict with that into desiring it. The "psychiatric test" in his palace confirms this: if you choose answers that aren't in line with Maruki's worldview, he "treats" you until you agree with him. For whatever reason though he chose to try to personally convince Akechi instead of brainwashing him, which was never going to work because Akechi is both a psychopath who enjoys the pain of others, and someone who's genuinely proud of his efforts to raise himself out of the gutter. A perfect world without pain that's just handed to him through no effort on his part is the antithesis of what Akechi desires.
