e: don't be fooled by the orchestral presets, there is plenty of synth sounds as well and the sound engine probably has like 1000+ waveforms to choose from when building your own sound

the only reason nobody ever bothers with making their own patches is that it's quite complicated and tedious

my main problem with the $5,000 eurorack setups is never have i once ever seen a video or heard a song where anybody is doing anything but making random arpeggiated doodles and beep boops with no rhythm or backing tracks. i'm sure its fun to twiddle the knobs but its just a more expensive update of the old 'circuit bent' aesthetic.

I guess if you search YouTube for eurorack you will get a lot of beep boop doodling but thats because making music solely with a modular is quite challenging, but there's plenty of people like lightbath, Alan Dear, Emily Sprague, r beny and even Richard Devine who put out vids that sound like regular music.

It's just another instrument though, really. An absolute ton of electronic music uses modular in some capacity, I guess if it's *not* random arpeggiated doodles and beep boops then you just didn't recognise it as modular? Like, I'm going through all the more mainstream electronic artists I like and trying to think of one who doesn't use some sort of modular rig and mostly failing.

some people seem to think that idea of input setup -> auto song is the purpose of them

like I remember reading somewhere maybe even in this thread that they didn't see the point of getting one and just trying to make it into a unique synthesiser

I have a suspicion that filters and gain are something that really benefit from discrete circuitry. oscillators not so much. but then again I know gently caress all.

one thing I am working out about myself is how much more inspirational my bass station II is compared to say arturia pigments which by all means is a far more capable soft synth. but I think it's the physical nature of the machine. definitely need some knobs to twist

something that had infinite endless knobs with also oled labels etc would be the poo poo. the hydrasynth looks a lot like that but is a real synth

this looks ok. you can get a 4 octave one too but not a 3 octave perfect size one

problem with eurorack is that if you search for "modular music" you will only get MODULAR music - i.e. guys getting hard while turning the knob of their extremely rare bespoke filter doodads built from soviet nuclear reactor materials. i have been to several modular events and always without fail the best live sets are when a guy with just a couple of modules plays a nice set, followed by increasingly badass racks that devolve into noise, noise and more bespoke noise. i have said it before and will say it again that you probably hear and enjoy music made with modulars quite often - it's just that the musicians don't need to plaster MODULAR MODULAR all over their poo poo because it sounds good as it is anyway

anyhow here is something rare: modular MUSIC https://soundcloud.com/djmag/fresh-kicks-74-ann-annie-live-modular-set

just for clarification when i speak about sound modules i absolutely do not mean eurorack, i am talking about rack versions of regular synths like nord lead, nord modular, yamaha and korg and roland and kawaii and novation even. this gear you can get for $200, they come with insanely sophisticated sound engines and 16 parts with 64 notes polyphony.

none of the demos do it justice but combine this with the evergreen life hack of "there is no such thing as a boring over-used preset if you have effects pedals/plugins" and you are good to go

I definitely use mine a bit like this, building experiments with bits modulating and sequencing each other with unfathomable feedback loops, just to see what happens. Sometimes you end up with poop, sometimes you end up with gorgeous sounds or wierd organically evolving loops that I couldn't begin to create any other way, not even in software like max/pd/reaktor.

Unless you're incredibly talented or wealthy, building whole pieces of music that aren't either quite minimal or clearly beep-boop noodling is very difficult. I'm not talented or wealthy so the main use for mine is jamming and stumbling across neat sounds or loops that I sample and use to build a proper track in Logic.

Same. It's basically a bunch of men with their train sets, except there's a horrible cacophony going on in the background. Less is definitely more.

I just bought the upgrade to version 11. The new synths and effects are very good. You can now use VST’s in it. There’s a ‘player’ similar to Logic’s Drummer that will crank out beats for you. The mix console compressor and EQ can now be used in the rack. Finally, the rack, or lots of racks, can be plugins in your other DAW, as instruments and effects. It’s dope, especially if you have an old version to upgrade for $129.

yeah its individual aftertouch for each key

honorary mention for the bass station 2 i saw in a pawn shop with a "BROKEN" sticker and a $20 price tag (im sure it was something stupid like a power jack or 1/4" out) and i skipped it, then came to my senses and went back two days later and it was gone

here's something i've been working on. i hosed up the third verse while streaming but thats ok, i can fix it in editing
https://www.twitch.tv/videos/585570136

my goal is to get the midi data recorded and then start finding the actual synths I want. I'm not thrilled with the lead synth, it's just a stand-in, but I do know the key and melody that I want at it's core so I figure I get that down and then start swapping in software synths and changing settings until I find something permanent

its when you can change the velocity of your polyphonic teledildonic array after the initial key input, op. the launchpad pro has it, as well as a bunch of different synths. a lot of synths only had channel aftertouch for a long time, in fact i think poly after is still hard to find.

i recently came across this channel and it's good. seems to be a step up from 8bit guy/8bit keys
