A scathing review from Pitchfork is getting a 6.5.

FTBC is amazing. However, pitchfork is terrible. I just checked some scores and am laughing. They underscore things just because they are popular. At least they get Kanye scores right. (Until They don’t. His latest is not a 7).

Pitchfork has their own kind of insular community and as a result they sometimes tend to obsess over specific artists that I don't really understand, but in the case of Fiona Apple their praise is 100% accurate.

He’s from Chicago and feeds them a bunch of hits whenever he says some awful moron poo poo. Them giving kanye a 7 is like giving any other artist the jet review

i read pitchfork reviews as entertainment in and of themselves rather than any kind of serious journalism. my musical tastes are just off enough from their general wheelhouse, to the point that their writers usually don't have much expertise or knowledge about the bands i like. but they still write in the confident pitchfork tone, so it's amusing to sit and read comments that reveal the writer clearly hasn't listened to more than 1.5 albums of the band they're currently reviewing.

Pitchfork's been bullshit ever since they gave Tool's Lateralus a 1.9. Don't think I've heard a single Fiona Apple song. Where should I start?

Covet put out a new song a few weeks back. I'm regretting skipping their show last year even more so now that live shows are indefinitely on hiatus. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8a-GGIQlBns And local guys Dogleg I always praised put out a fun Clerks video. These guys are a blast live. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sp5EKknWZO4

Releasing an album on the same day as Fiona Apple while still recovering from the 'Rona probably wasn't an ideal situation for him, but the new Mali Mali is really good too. New Fiona is probably my favourite of the year so far, but Mali Mali is a pretty close second. If you like Nadia Reid, the more subdued bits of Mount Eerie, or Anthonie Tonnon you'll probably enjoy this.

See also: them being the last bastion of hyping Lil Peep because they thought Emo Trap was the future. It was not. Seriously in what universe is the atrocious Hellboy EP got the same rating or better than Danny Brown's Atrocity Exhibition that came out that same year.

Man I never really dug into Fiona Apple’s catalog outside of the excellent Tidal until now. FTBC is amazing, but When The Pawn has easily become my favorite album of hers and up there as one of the classic albums of the past 30 years IMO. Hard recommend for anyone else like me that had been missing out
