She just eye-balled cumin and garam masala, shes half-indian so she thought the sauce was a bit too much tomatoey for her liking, nothing too fancy. I thought it was fine out of the jar, but that just added another notch.

Yeah, it used to be $13 or $15, something like that. I need a bottle, and I keep hoping to see it less expensive every time but it's still a lot.

Costco is coming to my city, I am going to be very interested to see how it plays out.

A bit of competition for our local/not so local (Australian) grocery chains probably isn't a bad thing.

They had a GIANT $25 bottle last time I was there. I talked myself out of it, only to find out later we were out. Five bucks gets you a mouse fart’s worth of the stuff in the grocery store :(

It's one of those few things that's very much supply/demand based on pricing. I don't exactly keep up with it but absent a demand drop I don't see it ever going down. I think it has to be hand pollinated and maybe even harvested that way.

It's been that way for a few years at least; for a while I think it was $30-ish. My impression was that it's the effect of climate change on major vanilla-growing regions.

I seem to remember Costco selling packs of vanilla beans, too, but I don't think I've seen those in years.

Right now, the best price on beans on Amazon is four bucks apiece, that's a little more then double from the last time I bought them.

A huge chunk of the vanilla crop is grown in Madagascar and a few years back a bad Indian Ocean cyclone hosed up the island pretty good. Iirc it was a mix of fields being destroyed and the growers not being able to deal with the harvest while their houses were under water.

The whole process is crazy. Vanilla is an orchid so it’s finnicky as gently caress and basically looks for any opportunity to die for any reason. Pollination is by hand. Harvesting is by hand. It has to go through a crazy complicated drying and curing process.

Basically it’s insane that this flavor that shouldn’t exist at all became our byword for basic and boring. It would be like if “Porsche” somehow became slang for a dull, reliable, affordable family car.

I went to church for the first time in a month? I dunno, anyway they had plenty of TP but only industrial paper towels for an absurd $36 or so for a box smaller than a normal big Costco paper towel package. Also they were out of vanilla so I had to buy some at a grocery store for even more per ounce.

That said I suspect it’s partially also people like this person. This wasn’t the only cart like this I saw:
