Yeah, unfortunately I'm in PA, so the situation here is extremely weird right now. So dealerships are open, some closed, some have waivers, some tell you to go to hell, and some seem willing to work with us. Thanks, I guess we'll see!

Looking around, I was about to get pricing on what seems like the cheapest 2020 Bolt LT, $30,884 OTD. Not that I'm about to jump on this, but at least I have a point of reference when shopping for a used one. That's 15k less than cheapest Tesla with similar if not more features.

Ideally I'd like to get a used Bolt with convenient package or Leaf Plus way under 20k. If anyone spots a deal, let me know.

Used EVs drop their prices pretty quickly, though. You won't get a beast like a 250 mile ranged Tesla but for a city car it works.

Most Teslas started life as a six-figure car, so even used, they are not exactly cheap. A model 3 didn't sell in sufficient numbers to make a presence on a used lot. Leaf and Bolt are much better value if you want a battery powered car. Just not as trendy.

Few years back, pre-2012 Leafs were dropping into 6-7k range, there was no demand. Now the demand actually picked up and used EVs are not dropping past a certain point. That demand isn't in the US, but at that price point, it's cheaper to buy it here and ship it somewhere else in the world.

I know a guy who buys Priuses, any condition, any mileage, as cheap as possible. He's shipping out to countries like Georgia, where petrol is imported and very expensive. Guys like him is with keeping used Prius prices at a bare minimum $2000 point.

Hey everyone, been mulling this over the weekend and needing to bounce it off of someone else to tell me if I’m crazy or not.
A couple months ago I poked in here asking about used car choices and mentioned a Miata as a ‘comedy option’, only to get told that should be my main option (per the famous phrase). Anyway, I shopped around, keeping an eye on early ND and late NC model Miatas, but ultimately wound up going with a ‘19 Civic Sport sedan with very low miles and 6MT.

The problem? I like it... but I don’t love it. It’s fun-ish to drive, but with Covid-19 lockdowns in place, a lot of my recent weekends have spent just going on aimless backroad drives and I can’t help but regret not picking up a Miata. This is maybe a case where I should have listened to my gut instead of my brain.

So, I’m toying with (at least once lockdowns are a little more eased in a month-ish) trading in my Civic for a late-model NC Miata with PRHT (don’t currently have a garage, so a hardtop is a must-have). Based on KBB, I’m about $3500-$4000 above water on the Civic, but accept that I won’t get exactly out of it what I put into it a couple months ago. But, from what I’ve seen, I could hopefully do a lateral move to a late model, nicely-optioned NC without having to put much if any extra money down.

The NC would also be a step back technologically, but the flipside is I could easily get a CarPlay-capable head unit installed. The rest of the technology in the Civic (i.e. Honda Sensing) I’m kinda meh about.

So, should I talk myself out of this and just hang onto the Civic for a few years?

If you've got the money, do what you want.

If money is tight, stick with the Civic.

Generally, swapping cars frequently is an expensive habit. It's fine if you can afford it, though.

Basically what it boils down to. Going to give it a few weeks and see what the economy (and car market) looks like this summer. I’m not normally one to swap cars, but I’ve definitely had some expensive indecisiveness for other hobbies. *cough PC building cough*

In 2017 my Focus went over a curb on a turn I've made thousands of times and I wasn't sure why, but regardless it got called totaled and salvaged and whatever else.
Before that I'd taken it to the dealership 2 or 3 times for transmission and electrical troubles.
Would I get a substantial amount of money from this thing?

I don't think I have all my old receipts is the issue.

My poor 2008 Saturn Aura XR has been written off as a total loss after a sideswipe over the weekend. I'm a bit overwhelmed by the options out there though!

Proposed Budget: I'd like to spend less than $20k total. (I've been planning to get a new car in the next year or two, this just sped things up a lot.)
New or Used: Preferably used.
Body style: Mid-sized sedan I guess? Definitely a 4 door but not too big.
Use: Weekly for errands with occasional longer trips.
Important aspects:
- Reliable
- Hybrid or full electric
- Enough space to easily transport a bass guitar

The Saturn has really burned me on cars that don't have parts readily available. Actually, all the problems with that car could probably be summed up as, "it's a 2008 Saturn."

Hey all, I've had some bad luck with my car lately and I'm looking to maybe not drive a 90s Honda anymore, in spite of my deep love for them. I have owned three cars in my life, and they were 92 and 95 Accords, and the 99 Civic. I have driven other vehicles, but rarely for any serious mileage.

So I'm looking for something, but I'm not quite sure what. My budget is about 5,000 dollars. Maybe a 4 door sedan or maybe a smaller pickup truck, like a Ranger. Dependability with sort of minimal maintenance is something I'm looking for. I put a lot of city miles on my car for work. A car that isn't super extra stealable is essential.

Please give me some recommendations. I got home this afternoon and opened car soup and just none of the names mean anything to me.

Sedan vs. pickup is a huge difference. What do you actually need the vehicle to do?

You sound like another potential Prius customer. Something circa 2010 should be in that price range. See what you can find.

Mostly get from point a to b. I don't haul a lot of tools around super regularly but occasionally I do, and I was super comfortable packing them in the passenger seat or the trunk. I rarely have passengers, and it has been a long time since I had more than one. I'll check em out.

Couple questions. This is listed as a manual, but the interior pics look like an auto? Also, the price seems pretty good? Most used Cayman S's of that generation I can find are 45k plus. Lastly, I have heard these things are pretty bulletproof as dailies, which is what I'd be using it for. Any experience to the contrary? I am assuming maintenance would be better served at an indy shop as a porsche dealer's prices are probably rich person territory.

Yes, it's a PDK. You should run the VIN through a decoder. The dealer doesn't seem too bright, considering that's not Guards Red and the interior is not Espresso, and a run of the VIN backed that up.

Do not touch that car unless the dealer will let you take it to an indy Porsche mechanic for a PPI.

Got it, thanks. Any tips on looking at 918 Caymans in general? Trying to snag a S or an R(a man can dream) under 40k, might have to wait a bit longer.

And yeah, any used car I buy gets a 3rd party mechanic to inspect it, just in general. Mostly because I'm a dumbass

I can't help you with 918s (those are the hybrid supercars) so I am gonna assume you just typoed and meant the 981. S Sport Chrono PASM is generally the most desirable set of configurations. I wouldn't buy a PDK but that's because I am a purist. The R is good but not very common. There's a 981 GTS which is also a pretty good value and gives you a bit more over the S. As far as anyone can tell so far, the 981 is super reliable. It'll require more expensive servicing on a more regular basis, and it'll eat more consumables and more expensive ones, but I presume you're fairly well acquainted with that.

I would generally expect to pay ~50% more for consumables (and do NOT skimp on things like tires, oil, etc), and that your local Porsche specialist's door rate is probably 20-30% higher than the generic Euro shop. (It should be - if it's a lot cheaper I would have some questions about the performance). At minimum, your 20k mile / 2 year service is going to set you back $700-1,000 dollars.

I would cultivate a relationship with your local indy Porsche shop in advance of buying a car. You'll be taking it there for service, and they also know the local owner base. Get hooked in with PCCA. You should be prepared to travel. Hit up the boards to find what you want. I would avoid aggressive bargain hunting.

You've got early issues with 987s sharing IMS bearing issues but if they've got to this point the bearing is either fine or it's been replaced.

Honestly, there’s not much I dislike, aside from wishing it had a bit more power (the Sport sedan uses the 2.0L NA engine, not the 1.5L turbo like in the hatchback Sport). I’m really just craving a two seater convertible, which the Civic obviously isn’t.

That said, after doing the math and playing with numbers, I really can’t justify taking the bath that trading in the car would involve (especially with all the economic uncertainty of the moment). I’m planning to hang onto it now and then reevaluate in a couple years.

Looks like nobody is interested in cars right now.

Good for me. I'm looking for a used inexpensive electric vehicle, and hoping for recommendations. Would like to spend less than 10K. Water cooled batteries are a must, and that rules out Nissan Leafs older than 2018. The only viable option I'm seeing is Fiat 500e, water cooled, 110 range, small and compact. A little too compact to be honest, but I don't think anything else fits my budget. Only downside is no fast charging.

What else is out there? It's hard to search for anything other than Tesla, because electric vehicles for most manufacturers seem like an afterthought.

There are a ton of i3’s on Autotrader around $11-12k FWIW. The depreciation on these things are insane, which I’m sure isn’t helped by their, uhm, unique aesthetic

Can you point me towards the EV thread? The 10k price is an auction price, I can buy that i3 for around $7k anyday, but won't. They Are novelty cars, plain and simple. The 500 seems like the best option because most people don't want it for the same reason as i3, while being less of a clusterfuck of one off parts and having a better warranty. I can't find a 18+ Leaf for less than 17k, otherwise it would have been the most ideal.

Fiat 500e is water cooled. Old Leafs are not, and batteries go to poo poo very quickly.

The best thing about electric cars is how goddamn resilient they are. I just want to get most utility for less money.

no offense meant here man but you're kinda all over the map. what does "resilient" mean to you? that's not a word normally associated with cars. what makes an i3 a novelty car and a 500e not a novelty car? (serge famously called the 500e a novelty car and said he hoped they didn't sell any) right now if you're trying to spend ten grand on an electric car there aren't many options and as the famous saying goes beggars can't be choosers.
