Idle thought: what's the first instance of bands doing pseudonyms for their instruments/role in the band? The earliest one I can think of is Deathcrush (where, for example, Manheim's instrument is listed as "Hellhammer" (lol)), but 1987 has got to be beatable. You can't really search for it on the Metal Archives since they translate everything back to real instruments.

This Ulcerate album is the AOTY frontrunner. Feels like their whole career has been building toward this. It stands toe-to-toe with any post-Obscura Gorguts release.

Venom, Hellhammer and Sodom all did this on early albums/ demos iirc

He's melting down on Facebook which is pretty funny. It seems people are wondering what happened to the other tens of thousands they donated a year or so back, and Jari is just giving vague and snarky answers. The Wintersun self-titled is still a masterpiece, but this is getting beyond retarded.

Alright, yeah, that settles it. Venom did it on Welcome to Hell in 1981. That's gotta be the earliest one. It took a while for people to get creative, though. Venom's pseudonyms are pretty matter of fact, and then three years later you have Apocalyptic Raids with HELLISH CROSSFIRE ON WOODEN COFFINS. Hell yeah

I have watched exactly 1 episode of Legend of the Galactic Heroes. It was with a big group of people and the streamer told us to take note of how many named characters we are introduced to, it was something like 35 of the longest dumbest names possible. Seems like a good concept for a grind song.

Devin Townsend did a quarantine concert a few days ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kSmHwC7Mjcg

It's a bunch of old songs and a pretty ghetto setup with a nervous Devin Townsend performing a pretty wide range of songs from Strapping Young Lad to modern stuff. And some jury rigged camera controls.

This is so drat good.

Sadly the cirith ungol isn't very good, i forgot all of the songs like a minute after listening to them.

There's a couple of bands that you can put that label on, the more notable one being Mortification.

I think most christian bands went Metalcore during the early 00's and haven't looked back since then.

I can't get over how much I love the new Ulcerate. Definitely going to be in the top ten of the year for me; I need to get it on vinyl too.

This silly, but good slam ep came out this week with people from Krallice/Copremesis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6D9v5bk_0r0

I remember people digging Dark Sorcerer last time I shared them, well they have a great new ep: https://darksorcerer.bandcamp.com/album/from-the-emerald-tablet (really well-done death/thrash)

I enjoyed having the Hellhammer reissue/remaster to listen to. Apocalyptic Raids was one of those album covers that partly defined what metal art looks like when I first started listening to metal. Same with None So Vile, Raining Blood, and Tomb of the Mutilated.

Finally digging into this, drat it’s real solid. These riffs are incredible. Atmosphere for days and it’s full of weirdness that adds to the heaviness.

Some of my recent cool shoegaze finds:

Slow Crush - Reel kidna pure shoegaze band, brings nothing new to the table, but still got that classic sound, and they do what they do very well
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MSaAYs5U6Y

Teenage Wrist - Afterglow Didn't know they released an EP before their full-length. I really prefer the style on this release, far more mellow and melodic. Like a chilled out Swervedriver
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NEDVXPIdms

Holy Fawn - Dark Stone Not pure shoegaze, it's definately very post rock and some black metal influence. Very unique sound, the whole album is similar style so it does tend to drag for me

Oozing machismo
ok, so here's some stuff I found.

https://rottenblast.bandcamp.com/releases - Rottenblast is Indonesian death metal and they're cool. Nice and chunky death metal.

https://reekingaura.bandcamp.com/album/beneath-the-canopy-of-compost - Reeking Aura is death metal about ... gardening? These are the people involved if that means anything to anyone:

quote:

Originally conceived as a collaboration between guitarists Ryan Lipynsky (Unearthly Trance, Serpentine Path) and Rick Habeeb (Grey Skies Fallen, Buckshot Facelift), the group eventually grew to include vocalist William Smith (Artificial Brain, Afterbirth, Buckshot Facelift) and drummer Keith Harris (Afterbirth). With the addition of guitarist Terrell Granum (Thaetas, Buckshot Facelift) and bassist Tom Anderer (Grey Skies Fallen, Buckshot Facelift) the “wall of sound” approach to death metal was complete.

It's not really my style of death metal, but I figured some people here would like it.
