Oh my goodness :3:

Need some bird(b) watching direction - I've got a bird in my yard with coloration same to a common grackle (which I also have a ton of) but smaller and with black eyes. The beak shape and head coloration is not consistent with a brown headed cowbird (...which I also have) and it doesn't have speckles like I'd expect from a starling (regionally these are here but I've not seen one in my yard).

For reference:

Two of my grackles.

One of my brown-headed cowbirds.

Y'all got any good kakapo photos around? Obviously they're extremely rare and limited to a couple of NZ islands, but I want to surprise a friend who's a fan. She's already seen the Attenborough stuff.

As someone who has her job handling brown-headed cowbirds regularly, I'm going to say negatory on BHCB, especially on beak shape. Here's a male from my job
The beak you are showing is curved and longer, instead of being triangular with a kind of wedge-shape to the bottom jaw.

And a female

I see iridescence on your mystery bird, which could be very telling. Have you tried using the Merlin app? It's free and will tell you about birds in your area this time of year.

Definitely not a European starling. Very iridescent, speckled with white and a bright yellow beak.

New to birding, but I can tell you about those two since I get them daily at my job.

You job is riddled with (pretty) parasite birbs.

I'll check out Merlin, thanks! Someone on Imgur suggested it might be a Boat-Tailed Grackle, which can have dark eyes apparently (I thought they all that those hallmark gold eyes, but TIL).

(edit)

Since you know Cowbirds - I meme'd this (and the original is on my other computer) so I apologize for the macrotext, I'd originally ID's this as a House Finch male and juvenile but last night I saw a picture of a Cowbird youth and now I'm less sure - thoughts?

Boat tails are much, much bigger than common grackles, so that should be your first clue. A boat tail is about halfway between a common grackle and a crow.

Where are you?

My best guess would be an immature common grackle, which does have dark eyes and would be smaller than an adult.

Could be a Brewer's Blackbird, though it's the females who have dark eyes and are usually brown.

Central VA. It's much smaller than the Common Grackles I get so it must just be a juvenile. I've got ~30 living in the woods behind my house and the trees in my front yard so I probably shouldn't be surprised there's a bab or two :kimchi:

Whoops couldn't quite find where this post was, sorry.

I must admit it's a little early and I haven't seen any wild juveniles, but based on my id book and a quick internet search I would be more likely to suspect that's an (older) house finch baby. The angle makes it hard for me to use the beak shape for ID, but based on the tail length and body proportions being similar to the bird next to it I don't suspect that's a parasite baby. Cowbird tails are kinda short and stumpy compared to some other birds.

Excellent. The cowbirds are pretty but I want the other birbs in my yard/woods to be healthy too :3:

Yesterday, out in my garden, our local friendly robin popped up looking for a little snack. Knowing he's feeding a mate and chicks, I stood there throwing him individual pellets while he flew back and forth to the nest. When he was done feeding them and had also had a couple for himself, his mate arrived and they gave me a surprise show of Robin mating. My god they are brisk little horndogs - 4 matings in about 30 seconds. She was totally down for continuing the session too, unlike her mate who hid in the hedge to get away from her.

(European robins btw)
