You know there's been some horrific murderers who started out as perpetrators of woman-on-man domestic violence. Katherine Knight comes to mind. Haha she's crazy violent but good at sex and just a woman, it's a laugh- oh, wow, she just butchered his body to feed to his children, huh. EDIT: Yeah it happens at different rates but to be fair most male domestic abusers don't go on to become spree killers or terrorists, either.

Did Fox News all of a sudden praise Sweden? Did someone mass tweet a Swedish link? Basically Sweden have not instituted a general lockdown but are encouraging social distancing. This is not if fact 'saving' their economy as it turns out nobody wants to risk choking to death to see the latest Marvel movie*. Most swedes are effectively operating under lockdown conditions, because they're not suicidally stupid. This has however allowed their Coronavirus death rate to spike to six times that of neighboring Norway who did institute a full lockdown, as well as comfortably pass America**. Of course desperate idiots (and the dishonest) know none of this and are just "But lockdown bad! Look at Sweden, they're fine! Reopen the economy." Most hilariously ***, the whole reason they're trying this is the same aborted Boris Johnson play of "we'll just ride it and out and get herd immunity" Only it's increasingly looking like reinfection is entirely possible and having had it before only provides short term protection. * A lesson which many Republican governors who want to open up their states seem equally oblivious too. ** Adjusted for population. They're around 2500 dead, but there's only 10 million of them. That's roughly 85,000 equivalent dead compared to the USA. *** Deptfordx has a new favorite as of 17:17 on Apr 30, 2020 |

Adding on, last Sunday 60 minutes did a little special on Sweden that was obnoxiously glowing "Only 2,000 deaths!" and "The people are really loving this freedom." So, that probably raised its profile among the not terminally online. No idea if anyone else boosted it.

Parakeet vs. Phone posted:"Only 2,000 deaths!" Yeah nobody ever seems to account for relative population. It's not even just Republicans. I heard a piece a few weeks ago where Rachel Maddow on her show was contrasting the death toll between the USA (it was then around 35k) and the Republic of Ireland (then about 500) and saying about how much better they were doing. And the whole time I'm thinking "Wait. Does she not know how small the population of Ireland is?". In reality the death rate was pretty much tied at the time and subsequently the Republic has unfortunately pulled ahead.

A very clickbait title, but the article is pretty on point. There is a movement to create a false equivalency between male and female victims of domestic violence in an effort to muddle the waters about systemic male violence as a threat to women as a class. Those numbers aren't remotely close, and the underlying issue of patriarchy encouraging violence as a solution to all problems impacts men as well as women. These anti-feminist efforts to talk-up domestic violence by women have no interest in dealing with that at all.

Yeah, there's so many things even down to the name of the group (Ace of Base - Base of Aces, a nazi uboat base). It's just crazy how long it took for people to piece things together, could certainly get away with winking references pre-internet days that nobody would pick up on.

As far as I know Ireland is actually being a lot better about its records than a lot of places, including as many deaths as possible, whereas a lot of places have a covid death count and a mysterious extra number of excess deaths over their baseline for that period the previous year that definitely isn't covid related. Which is another counfounding factor.

Oh sure. But it wasn't the accuracy of the count that was the issue. She was treating both figures as honest and completely failing to recognise that the USA has over 70+ times the population.

I just think it's possible to discuss male victimization in a feminist manner - for example, the idea that men can't be hurt by women because women are small and weak is very patriarchal, as is the fact that both men and women struggle to report because of how being abused is seen as a moral and physical failing. It doesn't have to be a conversation about who 'deserves' limited resources because we can all be on the same side of survivors deserving protection from abusers. The narrative of it simply as a gender dynanic also ignores intersectionality, tbh.
