Is it some sort of meta-commentary that Ghost in the Shell SAC 2045 looks cheaper than a PS2 cutscene? I'm about 3 episodes in and it just feels really jarring that Major Kusanagi & Co are rendered like they are extras in Toy Story.

I skipped through the first episode and noticed three things, 1) Yes, it actually does feel as much like a video game cut scene as everyone says, due to its incredibly stiff animation, laughably flat direction, and cheap/bland production design, 2) In 20-loving-20 the series is still obsessed with framing shots around tits and rear end, and 3) Absolutely nothing of interest happens whatsoever. I hear that it (very lightly) explores some interesting themes as it goes, but the whole thing felt so utterly lifeless in the first episode I'm not sure why you'd bother getting invested. I couldn't really get into the franchise outside of the original movie anyway, but I really should be the prime demo for this sort of story. IIRC it's the same studio that's behind the upcoming (?) Blade Runner animated series. So hopefully they were either planning to stick with the look of the BR2049 prequel animation for that to begin with, or the backlash on SAC2045 means that they've pivoted.

Extraction was a fun action movie that wears its John Wick influence on its sleeve and all the best parts of Winter Soldier in its direction (stunt coordinator is director here) but it absolutely is a white savior film and I think it may be the most frustratingly egregious one I've ever seen. In a lot of "American in a foreign country" action films the protagonist is the central character and everyone else is either outright evil or morally ambiguous like the cop in Taken or literally everyone in Temple of Doom. But Extraction has Indian actor Randeep Hooda playing as a retired special forces soldier who has to rescue his drug lord boss' son or else his own family will be targeted by his boss. He's set up as an action movie protagonist, he's an absolute badass whose physical acting outclasses everyone else, but as soon as Hemsworth's character arrives on scene all character development for him vanishes. It was such a baffling decision that it actually negatively impacted my viewing as every scene I'm wondering how this guy will fit into the bigger picture but it never happens. punk rebel ecks posted:That new Netflix show by the creator of Adventure Time is really boring. I think the audio is edited from actual podcast episodes, I'm not familiar with Duncan Trussell, but the first episode gave me Dr. Katz vibes just with an actual budget. al-azad fucked around with this message at 17:48 on Apr 30, 2020 |

Just finished season five of Better Call Saul Just finished the penultimate season of a tv show and it still loving feels like it's desperately trying to find some kind of identity. IMO brining in the cartel and Gus Fring more kind of killed any momentum the show has. I don't know about anyone else, but I don't really give a poo poo about some Cartel guys squabbling over territory where we already know the fates of all the major players. It feels like they really wanted the characters back, but those chzracters in their natural habitats is just not interesting. The reason those characters were so compelling in Breaking Bad was in contrast to a weak dying family man who was slowly hardening and adapting to the world. Don't mean to poo-poo the show; I like elements of the show a lot but it feels like around season two they decided what the show "would be" other than a one-season origin for Saul Goodman and what they decided on was profoundly misguided. IMO you can watch the first season and understand everything about who Jimmy is and how he got to where he got when we meet him in BB and the entire rest of the show is unnecessary.

holy gently caress is brews brothers just a streaming pile. i am seriously reconsidering even having a netflix account. the characters are just blank: generic dim guy, generic tough girl, generic genial man, generic douche. they aren't "characters" they are joke delivery systems. and they seem to be running some sort of experiment in how to ruin a joke? because they will tell the exact same joke three or four times and they'll ruin it in a new way each time. the show takes place in a brew pub. it looks like a brew pub. big windows, lots of light, beer prominently on display. i can not reinforce enough how much this brew pub looks like a brew pub. in the first scene an extra sits at the bar and the main character, a generic genial idiot, greets him "hello sir, would you like a beer? i serve beer!" "oh, no thank you, i would like a dildo." "what? why would you think i sell dildos." "well, there are three x's in your sign." "AW now i see the joke!" and they go to the back where he talks about beer. after that zany scene we introduce the characters who simply explain their characters to the audience. "i like things casual!" says generic genial idiot, "i want free beer and to party and i'm kind of dumb. watch me insult genial idiot to his face making me not likable and him pitiable because he doesn't stick up for himself" explains generic dim guy ruining the ability to root for both characters with one line. generic tough girl enters and is tough. "I just cleaned up three messes by taking quick, no nonsense action. now watch me put up with nonsense, even listing some of it, and do nothing about it for no reason." which ruins both the goodwill the character was given and negates the only character she was given. we then get a repeat of the sex shop joke but with a twist: this time it's the same joke told just as poorly, but one of the character points out that it's a joke! "i don't sell dildos, why does everyone think i sell dildos? would you like this beer called 'stiff rod'? AW now i see the joke!" "like a penis!" yes, thank you for pointing out the joke twice in the same scene two scenes after the same joke was explained to us twice. look "comedy" is a science, what makes you laugh is subjective, "what's the difference between a snowman and a snowwoman? snowballs" might not make you laugh, but you recognize the structure of the joke. comedy is about timing and rhythm and reveals and surprise. the scene above COULD have worked if the place wasn't so clearly established as a brew pub, if the confusion was understandable. the reveal of the sign "well there are three x's in your sign" is absolutely ruined because the sign is a generic "exxxtreme rods" sign in sports extreme font. i'd believe the character would have mistaken it for a vin diesel fan club before a porn shop. the timing on everything is off, they're either pausing for laughter (there is no laugh track but there are noticeable pauses after some jokes) or just filling in every gap with "like a penis!" type joke lampshading. this would be embarrassing on youtube. how the gently caress are these talentless hacks getting loving tv shows??

Brews Brothers is wretched. The Sheldon of beer guy is so abrasive you can understand why he’d be kicked out of an entire region and yet no actual humor comes of it you just find him unbelievable. Not that I’m saying BBT is funny this is just less so with less believable or relatable characters, somehow.

Haven't watched Dredd in a while so I looked up where it was available to stream. It's available on a streaming service called Pluto.TV which has a bunch of movies on demand and also live tv channels which run with ads. Ads suck but maybe I'll get lucky like watching You're Next on TubiTv where they just put a single commercial before the movie. So I go to Plutotv and quickly realize that there's no search option at all. I page through a bunch of Action listings and then a bunch of SciFi listings but don't see it. I sign up for an account with a throwaway email thinking maybe they've locked things like the search feature behind providing an email address. Nope. No search at all. I go back to Justwatch.com and look it up there and click the link for plutotv there. I'm finally I'm able to pull up the movie which is listed as: Dredd (LAS): https://pluto.tv/on-demand/movies/dredd-(las)-1-1 It's dubbed in Spanish. So hey, if you want to watch Dredd in Spanish, Plutotv has got you covered.

But for the most part 3D animated shows are stuck doing these boring “Dreamworks-knockoff” house styles even though the tools to do unique things are readily available.

I've been watching All American with my mom during the quarantine and it's pretty good. I'm a sucker for some good football drama and it really scratched the itch. There's a lot, a whole lot, of corny rear end poo poo, but it's got pretty likeable characters and a fantastic performance from the lead actor. The football and family drama is pretty great, but the gang drama is a bit too corny whenever it pops up, and the number of sensitive social issues it tackles it often handles very hamfistedly. Overall it's been a very enjoyable show.
