The Disney Co. has been losing, by some possibly conservative estimates, 30 million dollars per day since the coronavirus lockdowns started to hit so his retirement was very short-lived. That would be about 11 billion dollars over the course of a calendar year.

30 mil per day ... hachi machi. Never thought I see the day Disney would hemorrhage money

That’s just turnover, think about how much in properties (Parks, hotels, they just got into cruises at the *perfect* time) they have that are closed worldwide. Disney has a capital stake in all of their properties except the two in Tokyo, so it’s a cash cow most of the time...

Wonder how much they recoup for ESPN from the sports leagues they partner with for the whole “we don’t have games to show” thing too. It’s been discussed more in England and other parts of Europe re: we must have matches to fulfill our broadcast contracts, but that will surely come up in the US as well. Wonder how much the terms will differ for leagues as well.

I think for a lot of ESPN execs the radio shows should just be there to promote ESPN-related content and generate the occasional talking point for the TV shows to pick up on (Mort said X player isn't in his top 5!?). The ideal version of that is Mike/Wingo and Mike/Golic which is basically a 3 hour infomercial selling you ESPN. Obviously the Lebatard Show does not always (or regularly) mesh with this prerogative (which is precisely why it's good).

The New York Times had an article recently about how Disney had recently just ordered something like 3 new cruise ships to be built. LOL. Bad timing.

Here it is:

And a couple weeks ago Disney furloughed 43,000 employees who work at Disney World. Their entire summer movie slate has been pushed. It’s dark times because even if everything magically clears up by late summer consumer behavior will take a long time to snap back.

Man, and Disney is coming off a 2019 where they had seven movies rake in over $1B at the worldwide box office. Including Avengers Endgame which took in nearly $3B.

All that success and now they’re bleeding millions by the day.

Small silver lining is I believe most of the Disney world employees are protected by multiple unions and got to keep their insurance.

But yeah, suddenly this sprawling empire is a hangman’s noose when your parks are closed, your movies are pushed, and your sports network has no sports.

Don't forget the tail. When they start releasing stuff they will have tons of shows and movies that will be behind schedule, many of which will get canceled without recouping a dime. Disney+ was released at a good time, but with no new content going there it's going to see a huge surge of cancellations once the quarantine is fully lifted.

They'll figure it out, but it wouldn't be surprising if they have to sell off some properties to do it.

smarter would be to load up on loans/financing to help cash flow, because it's cheap right now.

The smartest thing they did was give a discount to sign up for a year. I locked in at like $70 for a year and I probably would have canceled by now until Simpsons got fixed or the Marvel shows started if I wasnt already stuck with it. Should help mitigate some D+ losses

There's going to be a graph of supporting OPS for all the pitchers in the league vs ERA and he's going to be a 2 sigma outlier for both.

Love one of the replies talking about "virtual signaling." Doesn't beat imminent domain for my favorite misspelling but it's up there.

So for those of you in your early to mid 30s who watched a lot of late 80s and early 90s NBA, here's a name you might remember.

Peter Vecsey is legit offended nobody at ESPN wanted to interview him for "The Last Dance".

He's last been seen having some Extremely Normal Ones on twitter
